Reliability research -- looking for P5s

We've updated our reliability stats for the Protege to include owner experiences through June 30, 2014 (making them about 14 months ahead of some others).

Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2003 Protege: 77, moderate
2002 Protege: 73, low
2001 Protege: 91, moderate, very small sample size
2000 Protege: 60, low, very small sample size

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds", to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop:

2003 Protege: 54, 7

Next updates in November and in February. The more owners participate, the more comprehensive and precise these will be.

mine has been with the family since 05 and has been a very solid reliable car throughout. it currently has about 157,000 miles on it and very little rust( i am in dry and hot texas though, and the car has been here its whole life) clutch finally went out at 145,000 miles and other than that it has not needed any major repairs over $300 that i can remember. as long as you do the maintenance on these cars they are reliable from my experience

If you have not done so already, do yourself a favor and absolutely check out Michael's TruDelta website, which is constantly updated for content and revised periodically with new categories and changes for ease of use. It's the best, without question, because it is owner-driven (no pun). Very definitely, the best out there. Add your vehicle(s) now.

Living in MI, his 5 unfortunately had the dreaded rust here and there. Me Living in Colorado, he always had my sympathy.

BTW, I've had no repairs in the past 4+ years and looking at 200K miles. And no rust...

Thanks for putting a good word in! We very much need more P5s.

Alas, this is partly because I sold mine. I wasn't driving it much, and it didn't make sense to have it just rust parked in my garage.

I have an RX-8 now. To avoid a repeat of the rust trauma, it stayed in the garage all winter.

So, how have these cars been doing lately?

Our reliability stats for the Protege now include owner experiences through March 31, 2015. (Others are nearly a year behind.)

In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year ("low" is best):

2003 Protege: 83, moderate
2002 Protege: 83, moderate

Plus, the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop:

2003 Protege: 55, 7

Sample sizes have been falling, as more members have been selling than buying P5s. To counteract this, I hope more owners will join.

Our reliability stats for the Protege now cover the year ending June 30, 2015. (Others are over a year behind, and so report how these cars were doing when a year younger.)

Repair trips per 100 cars:

2003 Protege: 70, low
2002 Protege: 65, low

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds", to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop:

2003 Protege: 53, < 1

Additional participants would be very helpful, as our members are selling these much more often than they are buying them.
