    '03.5 MSP in Edmonton

$2600 I have for sale an 03.5 MSP. Pictures are on Kijiji link below. It's kinda high mileage but runs and handles like something with 170k. Car is located in Edmonton, AB. Kijiji link: [removed]

Are all steel rims created alike?

Good tips but I found the answer. 14in rims won't fit on the MSP, but the universal 15in rims for a MSP is the same for an '11 Civic. So, in short I bought them and they fit like a dream. Finally have the correct size for my car! From 195/55/15 to a 195/65/15, humongous difference.

MSP bad bearing noise turned out to be Axel shaft bearing

Just got the MSP back from the mechanic. Sound is 95% gone. He talked about the bad axel bearing but I can't hear anything. He said that when they put their pipe up to the intermediate shaft (I'm guessing it's a metal tube they hold up to the axel to hear noises) they could hear the bearing...

MSP bad bearing noise turned out to be Axel shaft bearing

Where can I find the intermediate shaft? I cannot find it on rock auto. I'd rather not spend $450 on a new one either. Better yet, if I go to a scrap yard and take one off any 00-03 Protg or Protege5 is it the same shaft?

MSP bad bearing noise turned out to be Axel shaft bearing

So here's my situation. One bearing was bad and has been changed. The mechanic who did the bearing told me that the other side was not a bad bearing, but a bad intermediate shaft bearing. I assume this is the same as an Axel shaft bearing. If so, am I able to just get one of these bad boys from...

Are all steel rims created alike?

Here's a picture of the rims coming off the Civic compared to the ones that were on my vehicle, it looks like the center bore is similar and according to a website I forgot to bookmark both vehicles use a "High Positive Offset". I should be good hey? Is it just the offset and bore I need to...

What type of work do you do/what feeds your habits?

Hey guys. Noticed there was no thread on this topic! I'm quite curious to know what all of you do and how you're able to keep your habits going without breaking the bank? I'll start. Second year (soon third) Instrument Technician in Northern Alberta, Canada. It's not quite enough to feed my...

Are all steel rims created alike?

Hey guys. I've got a 2003.5 MSP and I've been trying to get the correct rim/tire size for my car. I had an old 02' Protg that was written off so I decided to use those winter tires on this MSP. When I look online, they say the Protg calls for a 195/55/R15 but it looks God awful on my car. A...

2003 Mazda 2.0L DOHC SMOKING in the Mornings and leaking oil from exhaust port

Ha, I see. So it's fair to say that if I'm not ready to do it myself or prepared to spend money I shouldn't even bother tearing it apart? I'll probably wait if that's the case. It's too difficult to crunch numbers right now as I have no idea what shops charge for machining or dipping the block...

2003 Mazda 2.0L DOHC SMOKING in the Mornings and leaking oil from exhaust port

It sounds like you're quite meticulous about the way you do things...for someone budget conscious, does the block need to be dipped or is it just a precautionary measure? I'd like to take the engine out of my car and just do the rings, is that possible? Will I have to replace the bearings or can...

2003 Mazda 2.0L DOHC SMOKING in the Mornings and leaking oil from exhaust port

That's pretty cool. Up here in Alberta it probably won't be that cheap. I don't have another vehicle (that I can drive in winter) or garage so doing work on it by myself is out of the question until I get settled away in a new house (hopefully that'll happen this summer) and then I can rip and...

2003 Mazda 2.0L DOHC SMOKING in the Mornings and leaking oil from exhaust port

Wicked. Sounds like you are quite experienced with this engine and the internals. So I have to ask what kind of effort and money you put into it. Because I generally use mine as a daily drive and don't intend on spending a whole bunch on it for practical reasons, and the fact that I have my...

    Temporary low RPM on stop.

Same thing used to happen on my old 02' protg es. I had no idea what it was but it was ******* annoying. It felt like something to do with the ignition. Almost like ignition cut out for that amount of time. I don't believe it was fuel because when it came back it came back strong. I have an 03'...

2003 Mazda 2.0L DOHC SMOKING in the Mornings and leaking oil from exhaust port

I see more people commenting on the valve stem seals instead of piston rings. Do you think this could be the case? What about your issue, was it solved with new piston rings? Did you replace rod or crank bearings at the same time? I read that on higher mileage you can't just replace them and you...

2003 Mazda 2.0L DOHC SMOKING in the Mornings and leaking oil from exhaust port

Interesting...I did a compression test and got 165-175psi between cylinders. So worn rings could be the culprit? How easy is it to do the ring job? Do they come out nicely from the bottom or would it be much easier to pull the engine first? Irrelevant: Since I'm on the subject of ripping the...

2003 Mazda 2.0L DOHC SMOKING in the Mornings and leaking oil from exhaust port

I hate to be the dick that bumps an old thread but I'm wondering how the OP made out with this problem. I have an 03 mazdaspeed protege that's doing the exact same thing. Burns oil in the morning when cold. Its gotten better since I put in lighter 5w-20 oil, with a liter of Lucas oil stabilizer...

Rust - and lots of it

Hey everyone. I've owned quite a few Proteges in my life. Starting with a 2000 w/ 173k, a 2001 w/ 140k (that I turned a profit of $1500), a 2002 w/ 223k and finally a 2003 Mazdaspeed w/ 233k! So, needless to say I've seen quite a bit of rust. All surprisingly (lol), on the rear wheel wells...
