    New P5 owner here.

That's one of the best paint-jobs and color on a Mazda I've seen. Wheels match the car nicely:) JJ

    Piston Ring Replacement

Yeah,..if you dont want to use a very light scratch [using a scriber for instance],..any other means is good,.long as you dont have 2 labels fall off! :-) J J

    Piston Ring Replacement

While the rering is not terribley difficult, there are a couple of tricky bits. Removing the old rings means trying not to scratch the ring-lands on the piston with the sharpish old ring ends. If you break an old ring,..wont matter, but installing new rings requires the least flexing possible so...

Rod bearing failure and Mazda won't warranty for a new engine

The dip-stick tube will get oil flung into it while the engine is running,..but once stopped, the tube is left sitting in the oil in the pan, and will drop to normal-level. 10 mins should be enough time to get an accurate reading. J J

    Tire inflation specs.

It's better to overinflate than underinflate. If a tire is running pressures below 26 psi the sidewalls flex a lot each time the wheel turns. For your vehicle, the manual *may* tend to keep pressures a little low to enhance ride-comfort,...I'd be guided by the tire fellow Also 2 psi is virtually...

    Dipstick hard to read

I insert the engine-oil dipstick so the yellow circle is positioned East-West or the broad side of the dipstick handle is parallel with the front of the car. You need to withdraw it,..wipe the end,...re-insert it as described, then withdraw and read oil-level :-) J J

    changing gears problem

**My P5 manual was having pretty big probs getting into and out of, some gears. The clutch was slipping, so I got it changed. After that the shifting probs went away. You could get someone to operate the clutch [engine off] while you look down at the clutch throw-out lever, and make sure its...

    Engine Oil Rise

If you feel its normal,..I'd except that, cause I've not owned a diesel, let alone one which has rising oil-levels. However because some dilution is going on, I'd be tempted to decrease oil-change intervals,..as the price of oil is quite small compared to the advantages.

    Engine Oil Rise

The main effect of diesel entering the oil-pan will be to reduce viscosity. By how much, will be a case of how much oil is in there. In the case of petrol engines, the worst case I had seen was approx 1/2 a pint of dilution. They really do need to come up with a workable solution instead of...

New clutch, am I being gouged?

You are completely right,..its a rip-off. I gotmine done by a reputable transmission place [P5] Flywheel was resurfaced, plus fit new clutch for $850.

Scored Cylinder, need opinions on new parts

Thanx for your comments. What you say makes sense,..and like a lot of things, previous hear/say can be quite wrong. The key here is, as you say, the engine concerned is not a wild-cammed brute with heavy overlap and aggressive cam-lobe profiles. Point taken :-) J J

Scored Cylinder, need opinions on new parts

Camshafts have what is termed "overlap" which means the exhaust valve for instance is not quite shut when the intake valve commences opening. This means for a few degrees *some* exhaust finds its way into the cylinder. How much is not something I know,..but once I had an Renault R10 [1100cc...

The buffering of the coolant gauge

Interesting. Maybe they are trying to stop people panicking if the coolant-gauge climbs slightly. A good cooling system should have enough "head-room" or spare cooling capability [meaning the t/stat is not quite fully open during everyday driving] to handle most demanding situations without...

    Voltage too high?

14 volts is the maximum for a vehicle. The battery if subjected to greater voltages than this, would start to overheat. Volt-meters need to be calibrated against a known reliable meter,..so you know the indication is accurate. Once the system volts go high, things like headlights start to blow...

Shifting from 1st gear to 2nd gear

It is a function of synchromeshing. Synchros are made out of brass. As the selector moves gear towards the layshaft gear corresponding with the number you are trying to engage, friction between the synchro and the next gear makes to 2 gears spin at the same [or close] rate,..then as the stick is...

    battery light

For the life of me, I cant see how mounting the alt-regulator in the ECU achieves anything,...but if you 're right, it *maybe* a measure to get the alt to respond to battery volts its experiencing. Why the differential in battery volts between the engine-bay battery volts and the ECU ? Less...

    battery light

Higher output alts have thicker windings to carry more current, thereby increasing excitation magnetic flux [from the rotor], and providing more *available* [if needed] current from its stator. Their voltage out is set by their internal regulator c/w brush-module. The ECU gets its power from the...

    battery light

That's some serious power :-). When we use the formula >> Amps = Power divided by volts i.e. Current = 1000 divided by 12,..we end up with 83 amps **at peak music power**. Because the alt can only output around 80 amps,..and the other circuits [eg ECU, injector-pump, injectors and ignition...
