Success!! I managed to change the brackets without taking the shocks out. Some of the nuts were iffy and getting the bolt on top of the shock took a while, but technically not too challenging. For the record, my CX5 is an early 2012 build (I picked it up in June of 2012).

Just ordered the CX-3 mounts (DA6A-28-380) hoping to get away with replacing them just by compressing the shock without removing.

Thanks for the replies. It's not the struts or seals...it's just that it stays locked. In general, I never have trouble opening/unlocking the liftgate in warm weather. The trouble only starts in cold (freezing?) Temps. For the next few days it will be a bit warmer here so probably won't have any...

Just like the title says, my liftgate doen't open when the temperature drops below freezing. Anybody else ever have this issue? I looked at the mechanism and nothing obvious so I'll probably have to take it to the dealer.
