Sounds like you need to top off your coolant. Is the overflow tank full? You might also want to burp the system, in case there are any bubbles trapped in the heater core.

No, it does not. Gauge not working properly would be related to the sending unit in the tank.

It actually sounds like either the Crank position sensor, or the ignitor (which is inside the distributor). The K-series engine (all of them) have had known distributor issues for as long as forever.
