Mine got worse the warmer the transmission got. I.E. running around town for a 30 minutes would bring about minimal noise, but 2 hours at 80mph made that sucker unbearably loud.

For me, pitch changed with speed. The faster the speed the higher the pitch. At 80, the pitch was definitely close to that. My Mazda dealer just called, new transmission should be here by Thursday and possibly installed by Friday.

@ MikeM: That is exactly the noise! If you follow the speed, I slow down and then Increase it. If you watch the tach, it jumps way quicker than the sounds. Sorry for the awful recording, it was so annoying my wife rolled the window down because she was getting a headache.
