I'm mostly a lurker here, but this forum has saved me a lot of time and money over the years and I thank all involved. Now, to the point:

I have a 2003 Protege ES with automatic transmission. I have a clicking/humming noise that I can't identify. The clicking noise varies with speed and it's coming from my front end and sounds like a hum at higher speed (think 4x4 tire sound). I can feel some vibration in the car, but not in the steering wheel. This noise goes away when I press on the gas. When I let off the gas, it comes back. While going downhill, I can put it in neutral and the noise level drops down considerable, but is still there. It seems to be coming from the left side. My first thoughts are CV axle or the wheel bearing, but now I'm wondering if it isn't transmission related due to the noise level dropping when coasting.

Any thoughts Protege gurus?

Hi all,
I'm replacing the left drivers side axle on my manual 2.0 ES non abs with a remanufactured napa version.
When installing, I can feel the axle lock into place and the cv housing fits snuggly right against the transmission housing. Also, I'm using the retaining clip that came on the new axle.

Everything seems fine until I crank the car up and give it a little gas. At that point the rotation cause the axle to slide right out of the transmission

The axle is the 24mm size..Could that be the problem? But other people on the forums have said they have used the 24mm on their ES..so...I don't know

Could I have screwed something up when I was removing / beating the hell out of the old axle?

Any ideas on this?

Thanks!

I recently bough a used Mazda protege 2003 FS-DE 2.0L non turbo (150000miles) with what I tough was a blown head gasket. The car blew white smoke out the tailpipe and was low on power and couldn’t rev above 2000rpm.
So I took the cylinder head apart and found an oily substance which I assume was motor oil. The intake and exhaust was full of black oil. The cat converter was clogged with burned oil so I replaced it. The intake valves looked cleaned but the exhaust valves were full of oily cruddy carbon deposit. So I pressure washed the head and cleaned it. I also relaped the the valves and replaced the valve seals. I cleaned the EGR vavle. And put the cylinder head and everything back together.

When I started the car the smoke came back but the power was restored because I replaced the cat converter. Upon further inspection I removed the spark plugs and found a layer of oil in all 4 cylinders. Oil is also barely making it way to the cam shaft. I tried doing a pressure test but receive what I believe to be false reading. 70 130 70 70. I doubt that these are accurate considering that I can easily go up hill and rev to 6000 with a problem. I don’t think it’s the ring since they were covered in oil and the oil remain on the cylinder. I don’t understand the problem because beside the burning oil, the engine sound normal. Why oil is flowing in all 4 cylinder?

I need help diagnosing the problem. Please help
I would rather avoid replacing the whole engine, but its potentially an option

(If posted this in the wrong section I apologize)

Hello all, I have a bit of a problem. My car, a 2003 Mazda Protege ES with a 2.0L engine, started overheating. The first thing I did was throw on the heater to try to bleed some of the heat off the engine, however, little to no heat came out of the vents. Since I was about about 1/2 block from my house I got it home let it cool down and checked the radiator. I noticed the radiator was low on coolant/water.

As I filled the radiator with distilled water, I thought to myself I've almost put 5/8th of a gallon in and its still not full. So I looked under the car to see if it was leaking out somewhere and low and behold it was. Now this is the confusing part, the coolant/water is dripping from the cross member that goes directly under my engine. So I figured that it must be dripping from above and running down some how, naturally I start looking at hoses feeling for any wetness, I found nothing. At this point I have inspected my radiator, all hoses connecting to/from the radiator, the heater hoses, freeze plugs, thermostat housing, the cooling hose for my intake manifold, checked my oil to make sure no water was in it, checked my trans fluid to make sure no water was in it, and I have come up with nothing. The car is still overheating and still leaking, the radiator will go from full to about 7/8ths quickly, then will slowly drain down till it takes about 3/4 of a gallon to fill back up.

Since I was trying to do this alone and at night, I called a friend over the next night we jacked the car up, got under it and tried to pinpoint the leak once again. The only thing we were able to determine is the water is leaking from about the center of the engine slightly closer to the driver's side through a hole that is about a fingertip deep and runs from the front of the car towards the back. Since my water pump is on the passenger side of the vehicle and impossible to get to could Mazda have put a drainage system into the car? I am wondering if anyone that knows if there is some sort of drain that runs from the timing belt cover/housing to the bottom of the engine to drain out or any other ideas where to look.

Thank you in advance.
