I hate that, and it seems like it got worse when I put in my cold air. I wouldn't think that could be good on the engine as much as it moves when you rev it and also when you start it. I think if I measured it my engine probaly moves well over an inch. I know of no fixes, but there has got to be some kind of brace I would think

A brace would just stress other parts of the car that were not designed to absorb the extra energy.

That's what I was thinking but I didn't know for sure if there was something out there. Thanks for the info and more information would help me as well

I just read a hole long thread on the Protege Owner Forum about this problem. Mazda has addressed it as a none issue because it is linked to the VTCS system for cold start emissions. I can't tell you what VTCS means because I can't remeber. But, you can unplug the solenoid that activates this system and you will still pass emission and this rattle will stop. I have a auto start on my car and never leave my house or work with out warming my car for at least 10 minutes. This is by no means a standard to live by it is just what I am used to and over a long period of time it costs alot in gas. On the other hand I have not heard this rattle in my vechicle. I would suggest you warm your cars up a little longer maybe just until it at least idles down to normal idle at 500 to 750 RPM. My car normally Idles right 500 nice and smooth. I wish I could provide a link to the other forum but I can't seem to get on that site for some reason. I have only posted there twice.

My car doesnt seem to be as bad anymore. I do two things though I usually give it like 10 or 20 more seconds to warm up and I use second gear on cold starts seems to work well for me. It hasnt done this I think in almost 2 months using it this way on cold starts( I also have 17,000 miles on my car). I was wondering if the top half of the MP3 intake manifold will connect to ours , it should and I belive it doesnt have the butterflys right. Correct me if I am wrong and from what I have read with the solenoid connected it shouldnt throw a cel light. In the future I plan on doing this or going for the fsze intake manifold. I feel that the butterflys probally affect flow of the intake. This wont be for a while though since I have plenty of other things to do first.

Also you could just try removing the butterflys in the runners this might stop the cold start problem just dont let Mazda know. You can find more information on the other forum about this.

I believe you are correct that the MP3 does not have the VTCS system nor the FS-ZE. So either one of your option would work. As for tamering with the sytem I would be interested in seeing if it could be done. If you do it take pictures.

Not to mention the harm an idling car does to the environment in 10 minutes... but who cares about that shit!

It takes ten minutes for your car to warm up when its below zero, I have been living in Alaska for last 3 year. Pluging in your car up here just isn't enough when its -20f.

Hey Fellas...I am a newby, but by all means, doesnt mean I am stupid.. Anyway.. I am in the midst of running some tests with a new PCM Program, but I have no results to chime in about right yet. I do know the car ran great... I may have lost a little bit of torque, but not worth crying over. I will let you know how the cold start thing takes place...
