Anyone got some suggestions for a knob that goes well in our cars? I just installed a kartboy SS and I find out the stock knob ain't gonna work.
So many aftermarket knobs look like cheap crap to me, even ones that you can pay almost 100 for. I don't feel like spending much more than $20 on a damn knob, and I'd just like it to look simple and classy. Any suggestions?

Why don't you think it will work? I have one and it works just fine...

Spent $70 on my flameball shift knob but it was worth it IMO. Haven't seen another one yet... in my area that is. :)

The beginning of the threads in the knob is farther up than the kartboy will go. The shifter diameter gets wider after a while, and the knob rests in there without being able to screw on.
There are three holes for set screws that I might be able to use instead, but I don't know where I'd get those, or what size they are.
I read somewhere that Kartboy makes them slightly different if you specify MSP to them. I got mine second hand from another member.

i have the momo cobra... http://www.shopmomo.com/cocbn.html it goes well w/ the interior of our car w/ the CF look. i'd recommend it if you're willing to pay some for your knob but if i was going to do it again (due to financial situation)...would have gone to wal-mart... haha its a good knob tho

Eh, I ended up getting some no name shifter knob off ebay for $20. It's simple, clean looking(IMO), no frills, and shiny! I have kind of a minimalist style, I don't like flashy stuff that yells to be looked at(stuff that lights up, bright colors, etc).
As long as I have no issues fitting it on my shifter, I think I'll be a happy camper. I got the black chrome, so it's really not that shiny either.

cool, its weighted, i was going to suggest the greddy counterweight (its only around 35 shipped from www.optionauto.com), noone beleives me when i describe how the knob DOES assist in shifting, but having a weighted shift knob is a completely different driving experience, the only thing that pisses me off about it is that with the stock shifter there is a ton of space between the boot and the knob (because of the way the stock one is), so short shifter here I come :p... that one looks cool though, definitly a good buy at 20 bucks (thumb)...

Greddy counterweight for me. The weighted knob does make a difference in shifting. Feels like you have more control and shifts go in nice and smooth. It's almost like it's being assisted into gear. Only downside is it gets really hot in the summer and gets really cold in the winter. With the space between the boot and knob, I kinda like it. Gives it an "off" look. Can't describe it.

I have the TWM weighted knob, I love it. Simple design, grey gunmetal, small. Its like half the size of the oem but weighs so much more. here's a comparison pic

Interesting, I saw the TWM knob when I was looking at the different options available. From the pics I saw I thought it was huge, but I guess there was no size reference in the pics.

As you can see its not huge at all, and they have polished, gunmetal, or silver

I am making a custom knob, design in Catia and cut on lathe at work. Simple, nothing fancy. Two piece, brushed aluminum base with gunmetal upper, should match nicely.

Any new news on that shifter knob?

Yeah the ebay knob I ordered came in. It uses 3 set screws to clamp to the shifter, but the screws are at the very top of this long threaded piece that the actual knob screws down on. (hard to explain, maybe I will take a pic later). The threaded part is so tall, it doesn't fit this damn shifter either. I like the look of the new knob a lot so I'm gonna keep it anyways.
I decided to get in on the megan shifter GB, and it looks like that one is shaped differently enough to fit my knob. If it still doesn't fit, I'll do some modifying to the knob until it does.
I guess I'll just sell the kartboy shifter to whoever else wants it. It fits p5 knobs fine apparently, and actually the MSP knob would fit too if I had the right size set screws for it. My MSP knob looks like crap too because my ring scratched the finish off of it.

As you can see, the end of the shifter is far below the set screw holes. I'd have to drill and tap new holes farther down to get it to stick there. The boot and threaded part of the shifter can't go down any farther because there is a sort of shelf on the shifter where it gets much wider.
BTW is there a limit to the total attachment sizes we can have on this site?

nice, so you replaced the boot as well?

Nope, why do you say that. That is the stock boot and it is now way too huge, I might try cutting it down.

i guess that is a difference i didnt know about, the 03.5 boot has yellow stiching to match the seat stiching, i didnt know the boots were different, thought just the knobs.

am i right to assume you bought the regular kartboy protege short shifter and not the kartboy msp short shifter? because i thought the msp short shifter was supposed to fit the msp knob!
btw, have you parted with the stock knob yet?

The MSP and the P5 have the same thread. It's the MP3 that has different.
I want to throw a vote to the Kartboy knob. It's great:

Actually the length of the threading on the MSP is longer than that of the MP3 and P5. Trust me, I have a MSP and bought a shifter for a P5.

I guess I got the regular protege shifter, I bought it used and didn't realize the knob would be an issue.
I still have the stock MSP knob, but I doubt you'd want it cause the leather part of it is kinda worn, and the top right of it is scratched to all hell from the ring I wear.

I've got a KBSS for my P5, but now that i'm getting an MSP i guess i'll be selling the P5 shifter to get the MSP one.

The Kartboy SS can be threaded to make it fit the stock knobs I think. Try emailing him.
If you buy a new one don't get one that has a huge logo on it. Those just look ricey imo.

Just keep the P5 one, unless you really want the MSP knob to stay in the car. I have TWM's P5 shifter, no problems.

if you're still looking for a knob, i've got a kartboy that i'm no longer using, and a greddy counterweight. for some reason the greddy will not fit on my kb ss, other people have it and it works, it just doesn't like the kb. either way, i'll post it in the fs section tonight.
