Run a search about the alternator belts, there are some threads about that.

It maybe cuz your altenator belt is slipping badly.

Here's my story I just posted here:
http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=88285

Here's my story.. I think it is fixed..finally
I decided to have the timing belt changed.. When the shop fixed the timing belt, they also replaced the water pump. They replaced cam seals, but not the crank seals. when the shop put the crank seals in, they were not seated all of the way.. Leaked oil.. Belt still squealing... They told me that the cam shaft was the problem... got a second opinion the second shop went back into it fixed the cam seals.... lots less oil leaking... however, the crank seal was bad.. replaced the crank seal. .Now no oil leak no squealing belt.

My hunch on the problem/ solution.. water pump bearing was going out.. then the oil on the belt caused slippage..once the oil leak was fixed.. no more squealing.

The first visit to the shop was over $400..
The second trip (to a great friend instead of a professional?? garage was $300

the first trip had parts of Timing Belt, water pump, cam seals..
the second trip had parts of cam seals and crank seals..

I am going to go back to the first shop and give them a chance to own up to the problem and refund at least the labor..

I'll let you know how it turns out..

Here's my latest update...

The first shop refunded my money... While I would have preferred fixing it right the first time, they were honorable.

Slight belt squeal on Saturday.. Put another new belt on (assume that the old one was slipping due to having all of the oil on it).. I put in a fancy hi-dollar (+$20) Dayco belt with cogs.. it should help... Now I think the squeal may be related to the AC but time will tell..

but for now... no squeal... no oil leak.. Daughter is happy...

hey daddy o have you tried turning on the car with out the a/c on. cause whenever i turn on my car with the a/c on the noise starts. also what happens when i turn the a/c on full blast the the belt tends to brake and you can start smelling smoke. i also think it might be the a/c that makes the noise but i dont know if that has anything to do with the belts braking. the shop told me there was no oil on the pulleys. well the car is still in the shop ill let u know if he finds out the problem.

Update on my daughter's car...

the belt start squealing again..

I went to a Gates website followed the instructions, did a little trouble shooting with a water bottle.. It was good advice...according to the method, I had an alignment problem.

http://www.gates.com/brochure.cfm?b...location_id=540

I pulled the alternator back off, the threads on the pivot bolt were stripped.

I replaced the alternator, tightened the belt.. no squealing.. I did discover that it was much easier this time since I pulled of the shield behind the RF tire.. it was well worth the effort to put the car on jack stands, pull off the wheel and splash shield..

So.. I am back to a belt that is not squealing.. time will tell...
