DX, LX, ES are trim levels of the protege. DX being the most basic, the ES being top of the line for the regular protege. there is also the protege5, and the mazdaspeed protege, which round out the other proteges available.

i'm not too sure about the trims of the protege, but the price should be around the same for DX, LX, and ES.

I'd go for an ES if you had the cash (LX has 4-lug wheels which means you can't swap rims with a p5, and there's drum brakes in the rear for LX)

1999-2001 DX and LX's could be had with the 1.6 liter engine, front disc and rear drum brakes. 1999-2000 ES's had 1.8 liter engines. 1999-2000 Proteges have different front bumpers, headlights, hood and fenders than the 2001-2003 versions.

2001 ES's could be had with the 2.0 liter engine and all wheel disc brakes. For 2001 there was also the mp3 which had a variety of suspension, cosmetic and audio upgrades as well as 10 extra horsepower from a different ECU program and exhaust system.

For 2002 on up all Proteges were equipped with the 2.0 liter engine. the LX and DX could still be had with rear drum brakes, with the ES and protege5 having all wheel disc. The Protege5 was first made available for 2002. Leather seats, silver faced gauges, different cupholders, door mounted tweeters, different wheels were added mid year.

For 2003 they added the Mazdaspeed Protege, which carried over the many enhancements of the 2001 mp3 and added a turbo kit 'designed' by callaway. Protege5s got a subwoofer in the spare tire well and mid year they removed the roof racks from the final cars.

On the ES and Protege5 the interiors were black cloth with red instrumentation lighting on white or silver faced gauges. The LX and DX had green instrumentation lighting on black gauges. The DX had a tan interior and the LX a gray interior with a two tone dash.

If i missed anything plz dont crucify me :D

the 2002 had four speakers, the 2002.5 had four speakers and two tweeters, the 2003 had four speakers, two tweeters and a 100w spare tire mounted subwoofer.

do not think it had an amplifier.

I just bought myself an 02 Protege ES and I absolutely love it. Bought it about a week and a half ago and I can't start workin on it........when I get the cash, gotta pay for the thing now. If you are plannin on workin on the engine, the 2.0L will be easiest to find parts for and get more power out of. Comparing the Protege to other similar cars, like a Civic or Corolla, IMO the Protege has a better, stiffer suspension, and nice responsive handling too. It's such a fun car to drive. The interior is laid out very well too, and the fuel economy is pretty good.

My opinions of a Protege are they are extremely reliable. But the thing I like the most is its a rare car on the road (at least where I live) compared to a Civic that everyone has. If you mod a Protege its unique. But as for the models I own a DX the lowest model since that what all the dealer had (end of 03) but I would rather have a DX cuz all the models have the same engine, I don't need the power stuff, and rims will eventually be replaced for nicer ones for me (I just wish I had a power sunroof :)) . The higher models are nice if you plan on keeping them stock but if you plan on modding your ride stick with a lower model and save yourself da cash $$.

The main reason why I bought a Protege was because you don't see many of them modded. I see a fair number of them on the road......but stock. Around Vancouver, I've seen 3-4 MSPs, one was actually owned by someone that worked at the same mall as me, never knew who's it was though. Other than that, I've seen one Protege LM, saw it at Importfest 2003. Apparently it was one of only about 200 or so in Canada, can't remember exactly. I've also seen one Protege around with slight mods to it, wheels and altezza style tails to be exact. I like to be unique, it's too easy to go out, buy a Civic, and tune it. Two other reasons why I bought it were for it's reliability and styling. the 2002 Protege has NEVER had a manufacturer recall, which is great to hear. These things last forever.
