manual trans. problem

My son has a 2000 or 2001 I'm not sure protoge. He is stuck in third gear. He can shift the gear shifter around to all the gear spaces but it remains in third. You must push in the clutch to stop and can only take off in third. I'm thinking the linkage came apart internaly.If anyone has any thoughts please reply. Also he is in Ft. Walton beach florida, so if you know of a good transmission shop or if the dealer is the place to go please let me know....thanks.mark.......later

broken shifter fork maybe?

That definitly sounds like the normal situation as would be seen with a broken shift fork, but take a look under the car to the shifter linkages, to make sure the shifter didn't just break loose somewhere thereabouts. It runs along the same tunnel that the exhaust runs, so you know. Good luck!
