I bought my '03 P5 about 3 months ago and have had NO problems with it... up until a few days ago that it. I was due for my first service, the 32k one, so I go to Mazda they do it and I'm on my way, I'm driving around for an hour or two and when I get home I decide I want to take a rag to my engine bay to just clean it up a bit since it is horribly dirty. I open my hood what do I find but NO OIL CAP and OIL SPILLED TOWARDS THE BACK OF THE ENGINE BAY, fuck I was so pissed, I found my oil cap in the little gap in the top of the front grill, the fuckers forgot to put my oil cap back on!! Oil level was still full, the only damage seemed to be the oil all over the bay. So I called Mazda went back, they gave me a free engine bay shampoo (but it seems they ONLY did the area that oil got on) and they gave me my next 40k service free, ok so they made up for it I guess.

That all happend on Thursday, it is now Monday. Later on on Friday I noticed that my gauge gear selection ('03 sport auto) wasn't working if the car was in drive (D) or manual mode (M), only park (P), reverse (R) and neutral (N) seemed to work until the car was on for awhile and the circle would magically pop up around the D to tell me I was in drive while driving. I ignored that ok no biggie.

But this morning (Monday) while waiting to pickup the woman from school the CEL pops up and the AT light starts flashing too and this was while I was in neutral. I also discover that moving the stick down to drive gives the car a jerk. I turn off the car and turn it back on and CEL is still on but AT light isn't, as of right now CEL stays on. Could oil in the bay be the culprit of any of this? Should I take the car right to Mazda? Should I find an OBD II Scan Tool and see what it is myself? Help please I want to get this sorted out ASAP, I don't wanna end up stranded from or at work.

go to the dealer immediatly, remind the service department of what happend at your prior visit, have paperwork from that visit on hand and have them read the code and show you the results

Thanks for help! Went to Mazda, they made an appointment for Wednesday morning but my service guy came out to the car with me to check some common things, he twisted my gas cap more and CEL was gone, the gas cap wasn't loose before tho and wasn't opened since Friday, he also said sometimes it takes a certain amount of time or ignitions for a CEL to go away once the problem is gone. I dunno but I do know CEL is geeeeone!

Somehow the Mazda stealerships like to "forget" to put the oil cap back. Happened to me and many others. Wonder if it's a crazy tradition or something...

Haven't brought my car back there ever since I bought my car from them in 2002 and had my first "free" oil change/mess. And I don't intend to in the future

those fuck ass tards forgot to screw my oil plug back in securly so i was driping oil everywhere and all over my garage, fucking idiot mechanics i hate mazda service, i used to work at a dealership and they treat the cars like shit, and if you have a hopped up rx7 or other sportty car they will take it for a joy ride guarenteed, ive seen this happen with my own eyes. which is now why i work for a different company not car related

that is so true. i work at a bmw dealership and the techs and lot attendants play around with customer cars. they do peel-outs in the shop to the point black smoke fills the air. some are worse than others but i'd be pissed if someone did that to my car.

also for that reason with the oil cap is why i do my own oil changes and basic service.

I stand and hover over the dealer mechanics as they drove, park and work on my car... I feel like I am being the proverbial 'Big Brother' but unfortunately I do this because of past experiences with dealers and I am pretty upfront with them about it.

I always watch what they do with my car, as a learning experience and so that none of that type of stuff happens to it. Sometimes the service managers will just stare at me but I don't mind, I'm looking after my car.

I'll be watching from now on, unfortunately I have to go with Mazda for awhile at least to keep warranty, I figure a year and I'll start doing all services myself

save all your reciepts from oil changes and you dont have to go to them... Its a law they cant force you to go there... Just have proof you bought the oil.

you don't have to got to mazda to keep the warranty!

just keep all the receipts from purchases you made and record when any maintence was done by either you or another mechanic/shop

i used to own a VW GTI 02 and i had it into the dealership to get some work done and there is a few things i always do before i send it in. i take out all of my cd's except 1 and put it in the cd player and i set one of the trip meters to 0 and then hand it over. every time has gone fine except for one. there was grease all over the stearing wheel and cd player so i press play and it isnt even my cd in the damn player and there is 200 miles on the trip meter! the dumbshit drove all over the city and then to Lincoln from Omaha, NE to see family. That was his first mistake, he second was the fact that my best friends mom owns the car dealership and had me reimbursed for all service done to the car (which was a new clutch and axel) and then gave me a few free oil changes and fired the mechanic dumbass. (stfu)

my sister brought her protege in for an oil change 2 years ago and they forgot to tighten her oil bolt and her car had a puddle in our driveway.......i checked and it was on its last thread before coming out......my father was pissed when he found out and he called the dealer right away.

my father and my sister got free oil changes next time......i probably should have but I do all the work on my car myself.....whatever????

idiots working at that dealership.......the dealership i go to has some nice techs!

Yep. When my engine was replaced under warranty, I had to come up with my oil and filter reciepts. Luckily I'd kept them.

umm yeah the cel and a/t light flashing is a somewhat common problem. Nothing caused by a idiot leaving a oil cap off.

man i watch my car like a god damn hawk... nething i do ne shop that i ever take it to. i mean i do most of the work my self but somthing like putting tires on i didnt want to take the chance of scratching rims so take them to a shop and watch them so closely makes them nervous but i dont care

But doesn't Mazda warranty require the other things like spark plugs, etc. The thing is I figure I might as well go to Mazda cause what I want to do is change the oil myself. Will a reciept that I just bought the oil do the trick??

Yeah, you just have to prove that you bought the oil. They can't possibly have the balls to question your skill to change your own oil after that fuckup.

The Mazda techs here HATE me. I've taken my car there probably 3 times for minor warranty stuff, and every time I'm in the bay standing over there shoulder, telling them not to do stuff, telling them TO do stuff, basically whatever I feel like I would do if it wasn't being donw for free by them, lol. They even made me sign a release to be allowed in the bay, saying I wont sue them if I get in an "accident" while in there. I wont take it there any more though. I dont trust those bastards now that I have my new wheels. I know they'd find a way to fuck them up somehow.
