So I was at B&N today
I picked up
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0837601606/103-0511223-6344660
and started to read it.
From what i read i looked at the Mazdaspeed protege design and found that there were a lot of great design aspect of the protege turbo.
Thing Good about the design
1. Turbo size. the GT25 turbo in our car is perfectly sized. He descibed the turbo should product 0 psi at 30% of the redline
Our car 6500 redline * .3 = 1950 rpm. I watched as my car started to spool around 2000 which is only a 3% different from the ideal turbo size
2. IC design whould be top - down to promote the number of channels running through the IC.
which mazda did correct
3. Bar and Plate vs Tube and Fin
Bar and Plate = lower PSI drop.
Tube and Fin = better cooling effency.
I would of went for the Bar and Plate as well because we don't have a hi-boost car. Now if it was a 15 psi car i'd went with the tube and fin in a heart beat.
Things I noticed bad about the car
1. the End tank design the fact that it is a angled entry makes it uneven airflow through out the IC
Honestly I think the Mazdaspeed protege's turbo was very well designed.
I would like to give credit to calloway and mazda for the car.

Needs more forged pistons, bigger injectors and better ECU, but other than that, good design for a stock car. Best stock t25 ever.

indeed, despite some things that could be improved, the initial design was not bad at all.

I'd suggest anyone with even a desire to learn the least bit about our cars to get this book. Good, good, good info.

I own a copy of Maximum Boost and it's one of my favorite books in my collection. There's so many books I want to read and buy, I can never afford them all.

and when you get it, remember that its the basics and theory of turbocharging. Since it was written things have changed and its meant as a tool to guide you not as the..corky said this so it applies and im not listening to anyone book. cause i see that alot. good book though id definately recommend it.

I was talking in terms of flow, efficiency, boost response etc in comparison to the 2g DSM t25, sr20 t25, etc.
Not sure the specs on the espirit t25s, but im sure they are nice. :)
yeah, it's only too bad the intercooler came from a diesel turbo mazda in europe. those stupid endtanks...PLASTIC FOR CRAP'S SAKE (although they do have nice insulating properties)

Needs more forged pistons, bigger injectors and better ECU, but other than that, good design for a stock car. Best stock t25 ever.Remember though, that's why the car was so inexpensive. If they had to build up the internals, the production cost would raise the sticker price considerably. Plus, the internals are fine for what the builders intended. It's the people that start playing with boost that get into trouble.

For the money the MSP is a great car. Sure the parts bin items are an issue, but where can you get this blend of looks, handling, and performance for under $20K?
The stock internals have no problem handling reasonable power increases. The problem lies in what is reasonable to each owner.

I love that book, and I learned so much from it. Really helped me to understand all aspects of FI.

Oh i know, just wishful thinking. Over engineering a car can still be cheap. The Scion tC block and bottom end holds 380hp. The clutch 320. Makes me jealous to see how strong those are.
Theres 2 in the shop now getting turbo kits.. one has 625 miles on it. :D

It's nice to see the complementary thread about the MSP! I love my car, and will continue to do so despite it's shortcomings and faults. In reality, this car was designed to be a $20K compact sport sedan to compete against a primarily N/A market (SE-R, Focus, etc). It's not in the evo/sti class, and wasn't meant to run with them either. And the neon SRT-4 wasn't conceived until after Mazda decided to up the ante of the previous MP3 due to cries for more power.
Great handling, great sound system, great looks......I love it, and know I got my money's worth. Plus....how many times when describing your car to someone who's never seen it do you say "it's turbocharged"....! bragging rights right there!!!
