i say use a borla muffler. i had one on my focus and it sounded really nice. also make sure it is not a CAN MUFFLER that is at THE END OF YOUR EXHAUST. if you get that kind of mufler it will sound like crap and will make your car look like a 500 dollar civic.

That is not true at all. There have been a few Mazda3's with canister mufflers that sounded just like the other kits out. Just because you have a canister muffler on the back doesn't mean it is going to sound a certain way.

sorry. i just live in a place where i am totally surrounded by civics, neons, and cavaliers with can mufflers that sound like a pack of angry bumble bees. i have never seen/heard a car that has a can muffler and sounds good. i based my comments on what i have personally witnessed. different areas different cars.
Some car engines sound bad no matter where and what the muffler is (Honda Civic's) for instance. I've heard a few sound clips of the Mazda 2.3 engine with different exhaust setups, and I thought they all sounded bad, ricey. I have this feeling this engine won't sound great whatever you use for a muffler, because the stock sound is bad,a little tinny. My.02
I had a round stainless Magnaflow muffler on my ZX2, in the rear of course and it sounded great, low and a deep sound. That muffler sounded great at idle and all the way through the rpm's. But that was a Zetec engine and I just hit it right with the right sounding muffler. I've also heard sound clips of Zetec's with bumble bee mufflers. That's why we try to hear other mufflers on our cars to make a decision on what to buy. I want a good sounding muffler for my MZ3 2.3 engine, but I'll wait until I find the right one, which hasn't happened yet.

Have you heard the sound clips for the Draxas system??? Far from ricey I think....but thats just my 2cents....Also I've also heard in person the draxas/borla/magnaflow systems...and they were pretty similiar, some loder, some smoother..but none ricey in my opinion....Not sure if you're basing your impression of the Mz3 exhausts on sound clips...but I cna tell you that it sounds TOTALLY diff. in person.... try it out-you'll see what I'm saying!

alot of it depends on what else is on the car. my focus had just a 2.25 inch borla cat back system and it was loud and deep. no rice sound to be heard. but when i put on a high flow cat and headers.... it sounded like an angry pack of bees.

i couldn't tell you how it would sound on a 3. but for my focus more flow = rice sounding exhaust. i did have a little more power but i would have traded the power back for the nicer sound.
