Does it really matter which washer/gasket I get to change the oil? I'm considering a Motormite one at Advance Auto Parts instead of driving all the way to the stealer for a $1 part.
A friend of mine says he wouldn't trust Advance with "such a critical part."

I'm also picking up...
Mobil1 Syn
K&N air filter
K&N cleaner
Purulator PureOne oil filter
... for my first oil change!

Aluminium or brass. Copper works well as well... Any Soft metal washer will make a nice seal once...

or you can be just like the tech at my dealer and screw the plug in as tight as you can without a gasket and hope the customer won't notice.

Doh! @ oldzoomer
I got everything done. The car is running great!
Although, Advance Auto Parts had to special order the k&n air filter and the K&N oil filter. Will the K&N or the Pure One oil filters continue to be available for our car for some time to come? I'm planning on keeping my baby for a while and I want to take good care of it!

definitely, your msp oil filter is the same one for all mazda 4 cylinder engines prior to the mazda3/mazda6 2.3L MZR engine, so it's pretty important they keep making them so they can sell to millions of existing mazdas that use that filter :D

Yea that K&N oil filter lasts more than one oil change BTW.

I just get a new oem filter before I get the oil changed.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'm going to replace the oil filter every other oil change.
Thanks for the info guys.

Dude, change it every time. Why would you let clean oil run through a dirty filter?

Please change your filter every time you change the oil. I was always told that this is a must since the filter itself becomes less efficient at flowing oil the longer it is in use due to effeciently gathering dirt.
Every once in a while I get a coupon from my dealer and get the oil filter with washer for $5. That seems pretty cheap.

The K&N and mobil 1 filter lasts longer than 1 oil change. The OEM does not.

That's what I thought... I'm trying to save money to buy a house but I also want my car to last. I guess it's a tossup?
I could just go with PureOne which is half the price of K&N and replace every time so the cost would balance out.

a fresh pureone at every oil change is better than a half-used mobil 1 every other change, imo
heck, go for the oem filter if you want to, it is on par or slightly better in quality than pureone.

no its not. assuming you change oil 4 times a year, changing filter every oil change will cost you an extra $10-12 a year. what, $10 is a big deal and will prevent you from buying the house? (headshake

4 times a year? Christ, it must be nice to only drive 12,000 miles.
*tries to count the amount of times oil changing has occured*
