View Full Version : Disbelief in the amount of money I have spent!

I was bored tonight, and decided to do something, no one who modify's cars should ever do. I added up the cost of everything I have purchased to modify/rebuild my car since its purchase. I'm not trying to brag here, but I honestly could not belive how much money I actually spent on this damn car. Considering that I still have to pay a little over 10k off on the loan its a little daunting. My summer job will pay the car off so i'm not worried, but when I put it in this perspective, I honestly think i need consuling. I find that I dont go out and eat, or buy groceries, and i just buy car parts. They should make pills for this shit.
Grand Total Spent on Rebuild So Far:
Parts: 9344.25 (I still need endlinks, and about 300.00 more worth of misc crap)
Labor: 800.00
Grand Total: OH SHIT!
So what have you guys spent? I didnt think i had spent this much, but umm, yep, it happened.

I'm at around $11,800 give or take $500 either way (did a lot of rounding and estimating)
and the thing that sucks is I pretty much have to redo my entire front end.. fix sideskirts, new carbon fiber hood, new front bumper, new fog lights, paint a-pillar, new eyelids.
Yeah, that is not a smart thing to do. Just mod your car but NEVER EVER calculate the total that you have spent on it. With saying that I have spent a total of $1510 and I don't have anything to show.

I'm 18, and a freshman in college (I have a full ride thank god). I saved up for 3 years prior to purchasing the car, and would've been able to pay it off in full when i purchased it, but then the engine blew and i was kinda screwed. No one would buy the car w/o an engine, and I had just paid 1500.00 worth of sales tax on the purchase the day before, so it was a no win, no out solution. However, the only thing I need to pay off is the car, and my job will allow me to have my 5 year loan paid off by the end of the summer. And belive me, the total cost is up over 27k now, and i'm sooo wishing i would've gotten a different car. An evo, sti, 350z, anything would've been cheaper! But i wasnt planning on doing all of this right off the bat. I just figure that if the engine is pulled, I can either pay someone to drop the same OEM p.o.s. back into it, or i can do it right the first time.
And yea, I have a spreadsheet too!

Purchased so far:
FMIC - $900
SRI - $200
Tint - $125
Tires - $400
Gauges - $200
Various gauge pods - $140
--------------------------
Total > $2000
Allready owned about $400 in stereo stuff
Still to buy:
Custom catless midpipe - $60 (going in next week :) )
Down "J" pipe - possibly Hiboost - $130
EBC - $400
Sound deadening materials - $150
Carputer system - $1000

----------
Total - $2000
All together I plan on spending about $4000-$5000 along with normal upkeep. Not too bad.
Of course there was also the $12,000 in damages I did on my car, but I only had to pay $500 for repairs and $300 for a rental.

well lets see... at first I spent 14k for the car. Injen CAI... that's around 200, fmic 870, turbo back, around 950, fpr+fcd+mbc around 70, front and rear mm around 130, turbo timer around 80, rotorworks rotors + pads group buy I think that was close to 300, misc guages and shit around 200, 2 450w 10" and bandpass around 200 (had a hookup, plus I didn't want a killer streo system... just a little beat), Spark plugs eh... who cares. But with all this the motor blew. So I'm rebuilding (check the thread in this forum (general). This adds on 8,000. For my wagner shortblock, gt28rs, custom manifold, injectors, greddy e-manage.... and well a few other goodies :) If you're interested like I said... check my thread. just read the first page... nothing more. not trying to be a dick or anything but I just don't understand the logic of spending a shit load of money (say, 10 grand) on a car like the MSP (or P5 or whatever) in order to make it faster. showcar purposes are another story.
when you think about what kind of car you could have got for an extra 10 grand. it wouldnt' even have been an extra 10, per se, considering it would have all been built into the payment. i'm by no way an expert when it comes to modding cars but... I'm willing to think that even 10 grand into an msp wouldnt' get it to the level of an sti/evo. now I know... its' fun to mod and in the end, you have a truly unique car that's all your own. as cool as that might be, all things being equal, I'll take a superior car over having that feeling any day.
that being said... i have an appt to have a custom 3" turbo back along with an smic installed in a couple weeks. that'll put me into the sub 2k range which, according to my logic, will put me into the fringe... afterall, for about 3k more I could have got the WRX at the time. so... Ok, Most of us started out with a car and decided to Do Rims... Then CAI... Then Header... Oh a nice Hood... Coilover... Seats... TURBO... Boom... REbuild...
You see my point. I'm sure that none of us ever meant to spend "X" number of dollars on date of purchase. I'm one for sure. I wanted to turbo the car from Mile One, and did on Mile Fifty One, But it's more complicated and there is always a $500.00 part that will make the car either faster or last longer whille going faster...
daedalus
04-03-2005, 11:08 AM
^^^ Exactly. Its not like I was expecting on a rebuild three days into owning my car, but It happened. And yea, I could've paid all the labor fees to drop a regular stock P5 block into it and be no better off, but I decided that because I wanted to mod the car a little anyway, I could either pay to have a stock part thrown back on it, or I could pay to have a modified part thrown back on it. It will be cheaper in the long run to have it done this way.
But I did get a little bit, ummm, carried away.

so you go buy an evo and then what? its an evo like every other stock evo, not that the evo is not a nice car of course :)
the reason the majority of us spend it is because its different than everyone elses, If I bought an evo I would just end up doing the same thing except now its even more money
if I wanted something just so its fast I would not buy an evo either I would buy an old muscle car or and build the shit out of it for cheap and save myself a ton of money
yeah this is getting expensive by the time I am done the mods it will be close to the amount the car was new

Dude, 18k is like the biggest loan I could get for my car. Anything more expensive was out of the question, I don't know why, but I couldn't get a loan for more...
Modding is fun to do IMO, and it lets you pay as you go if you now what I mean. For example, I could make large payments on an EVO every month, but if I couldn't afford it one month, I'm screwed. By adding mods to a cheaper car, I can afford payments, and get mods if and when I have money for it.

well mine started at 26K - the MSP that is!!! 10K in negative equity.
then all parts in my sig. include future list which will be in as soon as i get my damn freelance check and tax return I will be at about 6K and all labor is by me.
So i now have a 32K car thats worth 12K but priceless to me. I built this car with my own 2 hands. and as of now i am inches away or maybe even with and STI or Evo. boosting 8-9psi stock with all my mods. when i get the Rods and EBC evos (stock) can kiss my tailpipe!!! and all that ofr 6K more than the car.
If i didn't have the Neg Equ. it would only be a 22K car and thats alot less then an Evo or STI and will be close to 300 wHP. Does that answer your question...CHICO2003

I love the MSP, definetly made the right choice by buying one. As far as putting tons of money into it? I wish I could. If I could afford one, I'd have an Evo right now, but I could barely afford an MSP and when I first got it, I told myself I would keep it stock atleast until the warranty ran out. Well that has been mostly true as I've just got a turbo timer, boost gauge, and brakes put into it so far, but if I had the money I'd have a built engine with no cat exhaust for sure. If I waited to buy the Evo, I'd be able to get one in 10 years (which might happen still). I just bought a house and if I had some econobox piece of crap I'd still put a little money into it, but wouldn't have near the satisfaction that this car brings. I get checked out by Evos, idiots ask me if its "a porsche?" (no kidding), I love it. So I probably will put an Evo's worth of $$$ into it, but that will be over years of enjoyment with little improvements along the way. I don't know if I'll ever want to get rid of this car. It will always be an original, the first Mazdaspeed.

I'd say around 10G. What's even sadder about this number is that there is only minor engine work done and that number will probobly double in a couple of years with engine mods. THe reason that it's high is because, I changed suspensions 3 times, exhausts 3 times, intakes twice, rims 3 times. Did an Mp3 conversion which cost me about 2000CAD painted. Did a whole bunch of other stuff.

hhmm... with 800 I was running 13.7's. With 1400 I was running 13.4's. With 1900 I ran 13.1's. Lets see how fast I am this year with 4900.....
BLKZoomZoom, But your numbers look like a product of your GOOD driving skill, more than the mods. But I could be misreading your mod list. Also didn't your car go BOOM!! Although there are clearly other reasons to buy the MSP, top 1/4 mi time shouldn't be one of them...Save a lot of dough and get an F-body. Now if the point is Sport sedan, great balance, great looks, than the MSP is a great car, its all about perspective.
personally I find it hard to put all that money onto the MSP, when it all will be lost. And it seems like the best route for the most power powerful is to buy used WRX, corvette, 944 turbo, Miata +turbo/sc...these options may be better if your only concern is financials. But clearly financials are not the only factor.
O.k no real point just my .2cents

Common misconception, I suck driving the MSP. My avg. 60ft. time is 2.18. My mod list is fine where it is.
I purposely blew the motor to find the limit, sort of. That motor was a trooper, lasted over 320 quarter miles passes many of which were in the 13.'s. The reason I bought the MSP is 1. to be different. 2. I was sick of driving the Rx-7. 3. I wanted a quick car that was reliable, got good gas mileage, and could take a serious amount of punishment. 4. My 71 Ply. while fast, couldn't give me what I wanted at the time,
The MSP has met and exceeded all my expectations.

Money Spent personally: ~12-13K (plus 13K to buy the car)... Money Terry spent before me ~8,000... total in... ~20,000 in MODIFICATION..
I will actually have an eventually post a full spreadsheet of all that damage... the surprising things is how much the "little" things kill.
But I agree with several ealier posts:
1) It's a hobby, I do it because I LOVE it.
2) If I had an Evo or the like I'd just be trying to do the same thing, and footing the bigger car payment
3) If I, or anyone else, ever figures out a good way to through AWD under this car... well then :) LOL...
4) It's fun!
5) I'm single/no wife (have a GF though), no kids, good job as an engineer... why not?

<FONT color=black>Man didn't realize how much I would end up spending on my car just having fun modding it. It's not about the car, money etc. It's about the fun journey it has become learning to mod my car and hangout with others who like to mod to...

Here's a rough list for me:
Terry:
Rota rims: 700
Turbo kit: 3500
550cc Fuel injectors(primary) 227cc injectors (secondary) and secondary rail: 500
Microtech: 1200
Racing Seats: 400
EGT and Boost Gauge: 200
3" Exhaust: 500
~ $7000
Me:
Evo III 16G: 600
Welded MSP LSD and hardware: 650
Exhaust Modifications: 300
Exhaust Valves: 550
Valve Job: 400
Head Work: 600
Manifolds Work: 400
Block: 500
Pistons and rods: 1200
Block Machine work: 1200 (polishing, decking, boring, aligning, checking, oil system etc)
Hardware, gaskets, etc: 1100
Profec EBC: 330
Additional Gauges: 250
Clutch Disc: 350
New DP parts: 400
Fuel system Upgrades: 600
Starter: 120
Water Pump: 70
And more I'm forgetting:
But just from above $9,620
Total of roughly 16K.. but that skips a lot of things I"ve spent otherwise (race tires, other set of rims I later sold, other replacement parts and fixes, alignments, touch up paint, lugs, brake pads, rotors, tools, etc)
Double checked.. found roughly another 500-800 I missed...
so total is like 10,400 for above.
that 1100 in gaskets and seals is the one to watch out for. I didn't budget properly for that... but that is literally just replacement gaskets, studs, and the like... (oil squirters, shims, bearings) etc... it's a lot more than you'd think!

lol I just bought the car so I litterally dont have anything on the car ATM. Waiting to settle into my new job a little more.
The FUNNY part is I thought I was alone with the spreadsheet!!
I already have a list. It started as Ideas and what I thought I wanted. As I researched it turned into exact parts I wanted... Then I am finding places that carry it etc. and I have website (if any) info, price etc. listed. When Im ready Ill know HOW much it is, where to get it, etc.
Im moving once more in january and will hopefully have a garage this time (thats the plan) so Ill have ++ room for working on my cars. No more working under the street lamp (I just found/fixed an exhaust leak this way on my friend's car)!!

Actually, I believe that you just forgot to add in the price of the Unichip into your equation (since it is exactly $640 short). So...the true turn out is:

Which is still not bad at considering how much money in mods you have. Did you also buy the mods that you sold, or were they on the car when you bought it?
