View Full Version : Ice build-up in wheel well/suspension

All of my wheel wells are packed with snow and ice so bad that I can't get it out. It makes my car noisy and ride shitty. It is too cold to blast it out with water from the spray bay (makes it worse), I cant scrape it out, Ive tried using chisels/screwdrivers and I have succeeded in doing nothing but cross-drilling the ice. This crap is all in my coilovers too, and makes horrendous suspension noises. I cant get it out though!!! And when I get some out after I drive it once it all comes back!!! Can ice being all up in my suspension possibly damage it when it compresses? Using the butt end of a bat I couldn't even knock all this crap out.

What's ice?

Seriously though, I had the same problem at the start of the snowy season. I couldn't drive on the freeway because my car would shake so violently that I would almost run off the road. There really isn't an end-all solution for it, except taking it to a drive-through car wash with underbody spray. I was thinking about making a solution that I could keep in a spray bottle and melt the ice/snow on the wheels, but I'm a little worried about damaging rubber/paint. Maybe wiper fluid?

How about using a heat gun or hair-dryer?

I have had that happen, too. Basically i just started chizzling it out. It will come apart.

You might damage the wheels like that, though. Be careful.

I dont think ill really damage my steel wheels :) (http://www.msprotege.com/forum/misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#). Once the packed snow cracks it falls apart.

Damn, how did you get so much stuff up there?
I usually try to leave it in a garage overnight if possible.

Yea, I had the same problem, car started to shake really bad when I hit 60. Took it and hosed that sucker off....They normally put out hot water so if you do it during the day and just on teh rims it will probably be OK...But the heatgun idea is pretty good too.

the car wash self washer is how i got it out. also every time i get out of my car i use my ice scraper to knock it out while it is still slush. takes dicipline but its better than trying to get the ice out.

I keep my car under cover when I'm not driving it, but snow/slush gets in there from driving through it on the streets. You really can't avoid it in Michigan.

I like the non-stick spray idea.

just ramp your car at a high rate of speed on some rough railroad crossings. that should jar it all loose.

kidding.

Build a garage and put the car inside.

^^This garage would also have to be heated. I have a normal garage...but ice doesn't melt just because it's in a box outside.

piss on it

that is entirely too funny considering this story that I found today...

http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_1261997.html?menu=

Man peed way out of avalanche A Slovak man trapped in his car under an avalanche freed himself by drinking 60 bottles of beer and urinating on the snow to melt it.

Rescue teams found Richard Kral drunk and staggering along a mountain path four days after his Audi car was buried in the Slovak Tatra mountains.

He told them that after the avalanche, he had opened his car window and tried to dig his way out.

But as he dug with his hands, he realised the snow would fill his car before he managed to break through.

He had 60 half-litre bottles of beer in his car as he was going on holiday, and after cracking one open to think about the problem he realised he could urinate on the snow to melt it, local media reported.

He said: "I was scooping the snow from above me and packing it down below the window, and then I peed on it to melt it. It was hard and now my kidneys and liver hurt. But I'm glad the beer I took on holiday turned out to be useful and I managed to get out of there."

Parts of Europe have this week been hit by the heaviest snowfalls since 1941, with some places registering more than ten feet of snow in 24 hours

LOL that was a great story. I know how we filter out alcohol and what organs do it .....but why did he say that his kidneys and liver "hurt" now afterward...(boom02)

I don't know about the liver, but my kidneys have been sore before after alot of drinking. It feels like lower back pain.

Someone is going to get arrested for trying this pee method. "But officer, I was just melting the ice out of my wheel wells!!!" and I might kill someone using the PAM method....or just be a sick drift car for a few days.

The kdiney/liver pain is actually from dehydration. Alcohol is a dieretic, hence all the pissing.
