I started this thread to get some ideas of some possible alternatives for the stock sub box. This thing annoys me and it seems like it takes up way more room than it has to. I would kinda like to have that trunk space available for cargo. Can a more space efficient box be made for the stock sub. I'm happy with the current power and sound of the system, just looking for an alternative arrangement. I'm thinking maybe on the floor of the trunk against one side or corner maybe. Would this be noticeable in sound, that it would come from only one side?
I've never built a sub box or anything, what do you guys think? If I went with some alternative sub enclosure, I would be looking to spend as little as possible.

Oh yeah, and somewhere to put the amp as well i suppose. (stooges)

FG a box for the left side of the trunk. that wil save you the most space IMHO. i trashed the stock enclosure, and im using the brackets to mount a carputer...so there goes my space again. and then im going to FG a 12" on the side, so there goes more space. but i should still be able to fit plenty of gear and whatnot in there, provided i take out all the stupid shit like my 2 sets of jackstands and other bullshit. ::end rambling:: <end rambling=""></end>

Yeah, that bitch is pretty heavy...it is MDF covered with plastic...so if you FG an enclosure it should be way lighter...

yeah, the stock enclosure makes the sub sounds like complete shit, my plans are to just get a little small ported box for it, put it in the corner, and mount the amp somewhere(no idea yet) with the top up, instead of down, so it can actually cool properly. I guarantee you, that if you do this, the sub will sounds miles better, and you be able to turn it up a bit more, without getting that ghetto ass sounding rattle from the enclosure....that thing is a fucking farce....Mazda shou;d have just used the same sub from the MP3, the tube kind.

Our trunk is awkward shape with that enclosure there especially.
You can fit a keg back there though. Just lay it on its side and drive slow. :D

also, if you did this, you could simply ditch the stock kenwood, for a JL 8W7, which would be right in optimal power range of the stock amp....and I guarantee you, an 8W7, will sound so much better than the kenwood...the only reason I suggest this, is that the W7 will no fit in the current location of the kenwood, as it's far too deep, but if you got the right box(easy to find one adequate for this), and make sure it's ported(its what JL suggests for this woofer) then you could have a much better sound coming from back there....of course, there is the issue of the price of this little fucker, which if I'm not mistaken, is a fair shake for a little wee fucker like this, but I'm sure it's worth it, as the W7 is prolly one of the best sounding(quality wise) subwoofer out there. Just IMHO.
EDIT* heres the info on the W7 http://www.jlaudio.com/subwoofers/8W7.html

My audio guy suggested facricating 2 enclosures on either side of the trunk, and mounting 2 8" subs. It frees up the space where the stock sub and amp are, and still leaves the middle of the floor space available. Better part of $1000 dollars though, for the custom fabrication.

Why in God's name 8? Two more inches gets you decent sound. I would never pay 1000$ for someone to make me a molded box and put 8's in it. If you do something like that make sure you're at least bumping 10's.

If you do something like that make sure you're at least bumping 10's.Because there's not enough room in those "pockets" for a 10". And it's not just mounting space, it's enclosure volume. There's not enough of it. Plus, the whole idea is to get better sound without giving up trunk space. The majority of the $1000 is for the custom fiberglass work.

Well if he does, it probably sounds like shit, especially a 12". There's no space behind it for good resonance. It won't hit tight...probably just a deep "whump".

Did this guy mount a 12" on each side? Build an enclosure and then mount it in the pocket? I don't see how you can get deep, tight bass mounting a 12" like that without it sticking out into the trunk space.?

i dont know how much space it takes up, he has a 12" eD sub. when he comes online i will ask him for some pics

cool...
The sound is dependand on air space not the distance behind the subwoofer.
Different subs need different air space and different amounts based on if they are sealed or ported.
Posuer also has a P5 not MSP.
I do know what I'm talking about :D

Step one: Rip out the stock sub & amp.
Step Two: Pull out both passenger seats.
Step Three: Mount bass shakers in seat bottoms (add to back seats as well for more fun)
Step Four: Get some bitches, put some plastic down, and crank the noise.
Step Five: Enjoy getting wet 'n' wild.

yeah thats true, but isnt that space about the same in both cars? i could be horribly wrong though.

Its a little different.
From seeing it, i would guess his box is udersized for even the eD but depending on how its built, it might not be that bad. The actauly internal voluem will be dependand on how huch your willing to let the sub stick out. When I measured my girlfriends protege, I came upwith about .6-.7 cubic feet in the wheel wells. That was an LX though and I wans't willing to let the box stick out at all.
Most 10" subs should be right at home in this location.

Nope, my 12 sounds like shit... pretty pain and simple. How's it supposed to sound right with only 1.23 cubic feet?
YES, I have a 5, and NO it's not the same. you guys actually have MORE room... just gotta be careful for those trunk hinges. In my case, I measured and guesstimated and alllowed for it to blob out from simply flush soasto allow the full 1.2cubic feet of volume that my sub's manufacturer called for.

Thatsaid, even at nearly a buck and a quarter, my pile of e-crap sub sounds MUCH better in a larger box. Because, amazingly it would seem as though the almighty eD prophets falsified advertised optimal box volumes to suit the market instead of actually designing the sub properly, they just fudged it and said it was a small box sub. I was told this long ago, and kinda shrugged it off, until I got the chance to hear it in a friend's 2' box. Much more low-end extention.. *sigh* guess it's newsub time afterall. Eitherway, especially with the kind of power I'm feeding it, it's really not that bad by anyone's standards, but it annoys me that I've got unused potential... Honestly, inspite of my wish for it to suck, This is the first downfall to this sub that I've found.
Get a JL 12 W3v2 and get that paper weight out of there.
Just for clarification for mspdfreak, the sub sounds like ass because the box is to small for it being an eD. A JL audio sub or an Image Dynamics, or a host of others, would be perfect in that much air space.

Interesting... Does $1000 seem about right for the original proposal for the custom enclosures I posted earlier?
It totaly depends on how the boxes will be constructed, if that price includes subs, and what kind of grills/extras are going to be used.
Poseur

doesn't really sound like ass, but it's not optimal, and inspite of having enough power to makeup for it, and sound decent in the end, It COULD be much better. eD is a whole pile of worthless...
On my end, I did everything I should've apart from measure paramaters of the sub and then adjust enclosure accordingly, And honestly it's a freakin sealed box. should't be that tricky...
Allthat said, Sub-wise I suspect I'll either go with Eclipse, or Adire. Alot of that has to do with our shop-brand alliegances. But atleast with Adire being small, they're nearby, very easy to deal with, and legitimately know what they sell.

Reviving an old thread. aka I did a search (yippy)
I too wanna get rid of the sub rack in the trunk. I have a friend that works at an audio shop and he can design a box for the stock 8" sub that will make it sound much better as well. I've been trying to find the model # of the sub, but I cant find anything. Does anyone know the model # or even better, the optimum amount of space the stock sub would need in a box?

Hmm, in that case he might have to make two (naughty). Is it going to be a wood box type thing, or fiberglass? I can't seem to find the info on the sub either. I thought there was a sticky about the MSP sound system, but I can't find it now.
I think it might be the KFC-W2005, which is the only 8" kenwood sub I can find that looks like ours.

its not too hard to make a box. ive also been thinking about making one so it will sound better. you could just mount the amp on top of the box.

I think it'll just be a wooden box with carpet, but if you want he could make a fiberglass, but it'll cost more. Once we figure more stuff out I'll be sure to let you know.

I ordered a 2005 Mustang GT, and when it gets here, I'll probably use it as my daily driver, and use the MSP as my weekend warrior. Oh, and the Shaker 1000 stereo in the GT is unreal. 4 10" subs...1000 (rms) watts.

Thanks for the link. I searched on Kenwood.com and couldnt find anything for it. Crutchfield, however, had some pretty good info on it...
"The woofer is designed to work best in a sealed enclosure with an internal volume of 0.6 cubic feet, or a ported box of 0.56 cubic feet (port diameter 2", port length 5")."
Hopefully this weekend we'll be able to make a box for it. Might have to wait till next weekend (finals are next week). Either way, I'm eager to see how much of a difference it will make.

for mine I just ditched the factory box for a pioneer ten in a plain ass sub box, with the factory amp strapped to the top.
