View Full Version : Question on AWR Front motor mounts
I will be purchasing the AWR front motor mount
I know there are two type of front mounts from AWR A/T and M/T, from what I know A/T is not as stiff as M/T aka more comfortable with idling
My concern is how big the performance difference is between the two, is it worth it to sacrifice the comfort to the performance?
Thanks for the help

Not sure whether I have the A/T or the M/T front mount but I would say that it makes the car feels less spongy when you engage the clutch which is good and it addresses some potential clearance issues when you make engine mods. The down side is that it practically makes your teeth chatter in cold weather. People say that they break in but I think that's only in warm climates. In CT, this doesn't seem to be true. Although I did put in on in November.

As far as i know A/T(automatic trans), M/T(manual trans), i dont think they make a soft and stiff mount..... I have both the front and rear mounts for our cars and after installing both i took out the rear one and left the front.... With both in there it is very uncomfortable, with the one its not so bad for most........ like i said for most......... just my input.....

I think there is a stiffness difference since the M/T one is ratted stiff than the A/T one at the ********** websit http://www.***************/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=SU&Product_Code=AWRFMM&Category_Code=MSPEngine

I agree with much of what rahrcr has stated. As you can see from my signature, I have the front AT mount. It took several weeks for it to "break-in." Nonetheless, it still vibrates a little at idle, less so in warmer weather than colder weather (I live in Florida). It does not, however, "make my teeth chatter" under any circumstances.
I have sat in **********'s car equipped with the front MT mount, and his car does indeed vibrate a bit more than does mine at idle. That experience is what led me to purchase the AT mount.
For perspective, note that I am some 20 years older than the typical MSP owner and am particularly sensitive to NVH issues, as can be gleaned from the damping and deadening material noted in my signature.

I agree for the most part with the professor
My comment about chattering teeth but in fun. My point is however that there is a significant increase in vibration over the stock piece at idle. When the car is running it isn't too bad. I too am probably a few year older than most on this forum. I have been making mods to hondas for about 10 years and remember making more power with less trade-offs in comfort and driveability.
I still believe that this mount is much more forgiving in warmer climates.

Stiffer the mounts the better for performance. Softer it is the better for daily driving...you make the choice and comprimise.
both mounts will eventually break in and be less harsh. I've been suggested to put on M/T fronts and A/T back. Since im not driving a race spec protege like AWR proteges I want some performance but not maximum performance.
Cullen (**********) recommended M/T front mounts. And maybe int he future A/T rear mounts. So im not sure if what you felt in Cullen'c car is just the Front mount or front and back put in. From what I understand it does vibrate but like a shaking steering wheel kind of vibrate.
It also depends on what kind of racing you intend to do. Drag racing or road racing? Besides giving you a better transtion/shift I think it also helps you launch with minimal wheel hop. So if you do alot of racing froma dig I would recomend the M/T.
Professor is awsome...your young in heart! Hes part of our MSP family...

I have the M/T in the front, stock in the rear. I don't think the vibration is all that bad. You only notice it at stop lights when you are sitting still...and it's very light.

i have both, m/t it front, and a/t in the rear, i did them at different times so i could notice a difference.
the front was first and it was great!!, wheel hop stopped and engine response improved, very little vibration was noticed
when the rear one was installed, it was hell for the first week, the car vibrated a lot at idle and made the car feel old...now it's been a couple of months, i can still feel the vibration, but nothing too bad, the car feels very smooth at cruising speeds, shifting became easier, and an overall improvemnt has been noticed, launches r incledible
in my opinion, the front one was enough, but the rear was an improvement
just my 0.02 cents

I have had both the M/T and A/T mounts. The A/T mounts are definitely softer -- if you press really hard you can deform the A/T bushing a tiny bit whereas you can't deform the M/T mount with anything except a knife. If you go with anything, I'd go with the A/T mount most definitely. I had both front and rear in and after a full summer of driving I took them out and went back to stock. It just isn't worth it IMO unless you drag race a lot. It really helps wheel hop but you will have MUCH more cabin noise and you will begin to have rattles that you can do nothing about. I lined some of my troublesome spots of the dash with sound-deadening material but it still wasn't enough. The mounts do NOT break in a noticable amount (I had them long enough to tell). When I went back to stock it was SHOCKING just how smooth everything felt and how quiet everything was once again. You totally can't even tell the engine is running at idle. Yeah the throttle response and less wheel hop was nice but just not worth it IMO unless you drag all the time. That's my 2 cents.

but you have both front and rear mounts in...that will definately give you that kind of feeling.
How was jsut the front mount. Iheard alot of peopel are satisfied with just the Front M/T mount. With just thr front in the vibration should be pretty light. From what I felt its mostly the steering wheel...which was vibrating lightly
Thanks for the help, i think i would go with the AT mount since i drive the car daily. Hope that the rattles would not be too bad
