While it might not be the fastest car on the road, I still love my p5:
-Handles like no other
-Great room to fit everything I have ever needed to bring somewhere
-Looks like it is a lot faster than it is
-All the ladies think it is cute
-Gets mistaken for a station wagon, if they only knew
-Good gas mileage
-Whenever I get in the driver seat, I always get the zoom zoom feeling. Dont get that in a lot of cars these days

I work with a guy who owns a TT roadster. About a mount after I got my P5 I see him in the parking lot he say's:
"Hey, is that new?"
"Yup", I said
"Man that's sharp... is it fast?"
"Fuck yeah", I says. "You wanna race?"
"I don't know man, it sounds pretty mean" (That was just my injen)
To this day he tells people about my car is rediculouly fast. He's never seen it go over 12MPH in the parking lot.
I love my little Bluebeast!

I agree, but you must not have had many other cars and must not have much to haul....
The gas milage isn't that great. I had a turbo 2.3L pinto motor that got 28mpg, the same as my pro...and space, I always run out. Though I have two kids.

two good quotes. my PR5 has a good sound and rough feeling when idling and driving. one good quote one of my female friends said one night was,
"man ryan, your car is insane!"
that was with my intake, exhaust, AWR front mount, system and other interior mods. waiting to get some DaveB rings.

I love my P5 because of the handling and the whole excitement of driving it, quite simply. Its just a damn FUN car to drive.
One of the other things I love about our cars though, is that they are obscure enough and rare enough (at least everywhere I've lived) where people don't really know what they are, yet they think its damn sexy when they see it. So the standard reaction is "Whoa...nice car! What is it?", and I kinda like that. I don't want a car that everybody and there brother has, I want it to look great, and be relatively rare as well.
Plus, everyone I've met so far thinks its fast too....and I just go right along with it....;)

I love mine just because its not a honda/acura, not that I don't like them I have had two acuras. They're just DIFFERENT. Im going for the JDM look with my car. After I lower it and put some RED Rota GT3's on it I will be done except for some dress up on the inside.

Yeah, I miss my P5 SOOO much. Though we traded it on a "better" car (the RX-8) and though my husband swears I am a freak, I still miss him so much and shed a tear every time I see a P5 come into the shop. I want to buy another one when my miata is paid off...
But as far as why I loved it so, it was the handling. I can remember going on runs with my RX-7 club and wowing the RX guys with how I could throw the P5 thru a corner at speed. Plus, just look:

WOW, I didn't realise the Protege5 is such a unique car up there to you guys. And what amazes me more is that so many of you guys cherish your cars and invest so much money and time into making them special in your own ways!
Down here the 323 Astina(hatch)/Protege(sedan) as it's called was a big seller, and you see them everywhere you go! A very small %age of people here actually modify them, so when I see one that's been give the nice treatment, it really stands out from the grannies and girlies that drive them.
Just to give you an idea, just me and 1 other guy are investing big $$$ into maxing out the 1.8 motor... Oh well, makes it easier for me to hold the title of most powerful NA 1.8 down here atleast!
Take it easy,

i do have a '96 protege which handles better than any of the cars in our family...i know it's a "lower" rank car, but i made that thing do what it was never built/desiged to do (cabpatch)
maybe one day when i can enough money i can experience what yall do everyday

I've owned about 10 cars in 15 years, including VW's, Porsche's, Nissan's, Honda's, and Toyota's- and driven many more. The P5 comes in as my 2nd favorite car, behind the Miata I had for 2 years. It just drives the way a car should drive. It feels connected to the road, and when you push it, it tells you whats going on. I find excuses to take it out, and often go the long-way on purpose just to spend more time behind the wheel. Mazda really has nailed the zoom-zoom factor and has made a believer out of me. (thumb)

yeah after I totalled my Accord (R.I.P) I was out looking for a new car and I was down to 2 options ...240sx or a Protege 5....I couldnt find a good conditioned, 5 speed SE edition 240sx...so I picked the protege 5 (The first time I seen a P5 was when a substitute teacher lived near me and in 03 when those came out she came home in a red one and it always stuck with me how awsome it looked, I had always been a fan of wagons and this was perfect..it wasnt bulky, and it wasnt too small (hatchback) it was just right..now I never have driven a 5 speed so this was my first also...so this car means alittle more to me because its my first stick..heh...anyway I love how I walk out and see its awsome Corner-loving stance...the clean as hell front end and when you wash it and give it a good wax, nothing looks prettier its not the fastest thing in the world...but from what I hear..its pretty much begging to be boosted heheh. Also from co workers, who drive mustangs and other all american vehicles I get lots of compliments on it.. MAD LOVE FOR THE P5!!!!
When I first saw the car on the lot, it caught my eye fast. When I took it out for a test drive, i was amazed by how good it handled. Unique look and great car all around.

It does handle incredibly well, great steering response and feel.
And you're right... literally every girl that has seen it says how "cute" it is!
But let's not forget the best thing about the P5: ZOOM-ZOOM!

I'm a car nut, and always have been, so my 'dream garage' is constantly changing... but one vehicle that would always have a place is my P5. There are moments - very brief - when I think it might be nice to have something more powerful, but then I look at my car (damn, she looks good) and take her for a drive... Nothing can compare. Period.
My only 'complaint' with the car is the lack of power, which is the concensus of just about everyone, and the fact that the modding bug is so damn hard to get rid of once it's bitten you! lol Like everyone says, I still get a smile on my face when I get behind the wheel and I've never been in another car where I felt so connected to the road or had so much fun driving. Zoom Zoom for life! :D

I love my car like the day I got it 3 years ago! I chose my P5 over a Mustang GT; I thought I'd get a lot of crap from people for that, but everyone says I made a good decision! I think the way the interior looks is way better than most, and I wanted something that not everyone and their mother has.. plus it looks and handles better than the GT did (in my opinion)..
And yes, I still park it in end spots.. and stare at it out of my office window =)

my uncle just bought an audi a3 and he came by to show me. it looks nice inside and out and has higher quality materials, but the p5 has the best hatcback profile ever. if you look at the outlines of other hatchbacks: a3, matrix, spectra5, even the madza3, they don't come close to the right proportions that the p5 has. plus the front dam and side skirts? they look better than what the best bodykit makers offer. sporty without looking ricey.
i'd have to agree with eveyone else: when i'm finished with work and see my baby waiting for me, it puts a smile on my face every time. i'm going to rock my p5 till the wheels fall off.

Is it just me or are the Protege5 owners much happier with their choice of car than the MSP owners in general? I've been doing some thinking, and I think it comes down to why we purchased our cars. I bought my Protege5 because it was a hatchback that looked great and I loved what Mazda stood for as a company.
It seems that MSP owners bought the Mazdaspeed Protege thinking that it would compete with the likes of the WRX but looked much sexier and was cheaper.
I'm satisfied with the performance of my car with just bolt-ons and suspension work, while it seems that MSP owners are blowing engines all the time trying to get the best 1/4 mile times.

strata has the exact same story as I do. Got rid of an accord, was looking for a 98 240 blah blah blah.
I was looking at autotrader and couldn't decide on any cars i wanted to buy that were in my range. Then it hit me, what about the pro5? So I hit up epinions.com and was really surprised at the results. Once I started calling dealers in my area I realized I was onto something - every dealer that said they had one on autotrader had already sold it the day they got it!! Anyway, eventually I found mine at a volvo dealer here in NoVA took it for a test drive and was hooked.
The handling is what really sold me on this car, even with all the stuff I had done to the accord (H&R OE sport, KYB AGX, ST rear sway bar, front and rear STB's) the pro5 easily out handles the accord. Then there is the practicality - I've already slept comfortably in the back of the car. :D Everyone thought I was crazy when I said I was buying this car, but they've all been turned and I'm really satisfied with this car.

I think there were a lot of issues wthe msp at first i.e. klunk and hesitation. The p5 has had its own problems, but I think in general they haven't affected people as much as the msp.
But let's keep this a love the p5 thread; not a p5>msp thread :)

Which is amazing considering it was produced for twice as many years and wasn't at all a limited production car (don't know the number of P5s on the road at the moment). Any issue at all that I've had with my Protege5 was caused by me not having the right tools to do the mods I wanted to do. Even with that though, I've never once been left stranded by my Protege.
As much as I love her though, I do wish I could go back and do it again and get one with side airbags and ABS. Maybe I'll buy another protege5 with the airbags/abs package and then transfer all my mods over to it :D

If I could do it all again, I'd look for a manual. If I knew there was such a disparity in power between the two, who knows how my car would perform now if it was a manual. I guess that just means when it's time for me to look for a new car, I'll just have to go turbo...

I like a lot the P5 but I wouldn't have got one simply b/c over here in Montreal you se one, or two at every street cornet (litterally!). P5 and M3 are just everywhere. That's why I got the MSP, it's a very limited edition (that's why I'll never get the new MS3, it looks just like an M3). But I wished they had made the MSP with the P5 instead of the sedan, it would have been more practical.
But I'm extremely happy with my choice. It's true that many MSP owners expected a 300HP car (duh)!! It pisses me off to see so many pple. on forums bitching about it and always praising Subaru and AWD as if it was Nirvana on wheels! Mazda is about handling and balance and the Protegé, P5, MP3 and MSP are second to none in that department!! :)

Amen to that!
I'm satisfied with my ~100whp (haven't dynoed with my mods so I assume they've added a total of 0whp) because it's such a blast to drive. People who bought the MSP because it was slightly cheaper than the WRX they really wanted (most of the MSP people on here it seems) bought the wrong car.
I know what you mean about the abundance of P5s in Canada. I LOVE visiting Toronto because I see so many Proteges and well Mazdas in general. It's totally different in the states. At my school there are a lot of Protege5s for some reason (at least a dozen) but when I'm not at school I'm lucky if I see 2 Protege5s within a week of each other. I've actually never seen an MSP outside of car meets and caravans to meets.

Love the P5 even more since my simple mods. Power would be nice, but the style is fantastic. I see maybe 1 or 3 P5s in my area and they are driven by much older people.

I always wave and give thumbs up to old people driving Protege5s. I think it's awesome that they bought a fun little car instead of a boring buick.
Plus think of it this way.. the more old people there are driving Protege5s, the less chances they have to get riced out. If I see one of those oldies with one of those fake ragtops installed on a protege5 I'll pop a cap though haha.

I always wonder what people are thinking when I drive past someone in a stock P5. Most of the time I wave at other P5 owners as well. Our own little bike club.

I bet whenever I drive past old people in their stock P5s they look over at mine and go "oh god look at that ricemobile, what a pity"

I was so happy to see this post and to know that I am not the only one in love with my car. LOL! I have had mine since April. I would've never even considered it. I was actually looking at Civics & Lancers (What was I thinking?!). I had just gotten done at Carmax and nothing had caught my eye. I had looked at so many cars trying to find one that "sang" to me. Nothing. As we were leaving the Carmax we drove by the VW dealer because my boyfriend noticed "a little yellow hatchback-type car" in the lot. I figured I'd go check it out. I pulled in and saw it...The angels sang to me! LMFAO! He checked it out and test drove it (it is a 5-speed & I really hadn't had experience driving one). I was in love.
I went home and told my dad about it and he insisted that it was a car owned by a "kid" since it already had the Injen CAI and the Magnaflow muffler & tips. He said not to get it. I dreamed of that damn car all night. I found another one at another Carmax online. I almost went and bought that one for way more money than it was worth. I talked to my boyfriend and he said to take my dad down there to let him look at it. Dad and my brother came with me and they checked out the first one (the price was just too good) thoroughly. My brother drove it and was happy with it. They agreed it was just fine. So, I went in and signed the papers. I had just bought a car that I hadn't even driven yet, but was in love with.
I spent my first week of ownership learning how to drive it. I would go outside just to stare at it. I would point to it out the window and go, "That's MY little yellow car." My boyfriend thought it was cute and my mother thought I was nuts! I just love my car. It is so roomy and it just looks so sporty and fast. I sit and stare at it and think about the new wheels I want to get for it and how I want to get the windows tinted. And I just think of all the fun stuff I can do with my car.
My boyfriend has a '93 Mustang GT and he has never been big on "ricers," but he loves driving my car! LOL! I think he has as much fun as I do driving it. I love when I come out of a store and I can see my car sitting there in that parking lot. I can spot it a mile away. I am not one for yellow cars either, but it just works on my P5. I had to get the yellow one. I live in an apartment complex and I have noticed that there is a black around the corner from me and up front there is someone with a white one with some mods. I never noticed them before but I think it's really cool that there are a couple others right in my own complex.
I took my P5 on my first road trip with it this past weekend. I had to drive to the FL border to get two of my kids (I have three & the youngest lives with me) for the Summer. My boyfriend came with me so he could help me with the driving. I ended up driving the whole way there AND back. I never gave him a chance to drive it! LOL! I was just enjoying the ride so much! And the kids were pretty comfy with all the room and their luggage fit just fine.
I guess...What I am trying to say is...That I just love my P5. :)

I WISH!!!
you know, it's really sad when you know more than the parts/service guys do...

the parking lot thing is the best part of having a yellow p5. and i was probably the last person on this world who thought my first real car would be yellow...but I've never regretted it!!
