Custom Exhaust with stock muffler

i am wanting a exhaust upgrade but i dont want anything loud but still with decent proformance gains. I was thinking about getting some custom 2.5 or 3 inch piping made to the stock muffler. Has anyone done this and would there be any proformance gains or is the stock muffler too restrictive???
