I'm almost ready to go the turbo route. does anyone have any feedback/advice. MY ULTIMATE GOAL IS A P5 RALLY CAR! ZOOM ZOOM. She loves the twisties and the dirt.
I'm leaning towards the Mental Addiction Starter Sleeper since my P5 is my only car for the time being. After I get another car for everyday driving I'd like to be able to upgrade the turbo and everything else that goes with the high psi boost. For now it needs to be somewhat economical and smog leagal. I'm already planning on a clutch upgrade and big brakes to go with the 7psi turbo. Is there anything else I should plan on upgrading with the addition of this low boost kit.
Also, does anyone have any references for trustworthy installation in the San Diego area. Preferably someone who won't mind my involvement and questions during the installation?
thanks for any help,
jarrod

hit up Chris at SPD racing for the big brake upgrade
he has a budget big brake kit for the p5. he takes the bigger mazdaspeed rotors, cross-drills/slots them, and adds bigger mazdaspeed calipers... looks pretty sweet! and since you're not planning to run a monster snail.. these may be perfect and cost-effective.

i think you'll be fine with the kit and and aftermarket clutch. you could get about 210whp before you should upgrade any other engine items.

Why is this? Is it because the turbo install requires the removal of the pre-cat?

Nobody seems to take the time to tune well enough to pass.
I don't know the Cali laws - but I'm told they are teh strict.

what does CARB approved stand for exactly?

California Air Resources Board
4. Is this kit CARB approved?
No. Our kit is for off-road use only, however, since we keep one catalytic
converter, the car should pass the test in all 50 states as a LEV (Low Emissions
Vehicle).
So you'd loose the ULEV status also, but I'm not sure what that gets ya...
I think a tax break in California is all, but I don't think it means anything anywhere else.

The smog laws here in California suck. Since there are no CARB (California Air Resources Board) approved turbo kits, I will need to find a shop that will overlook the visual part of the inspection so I can get my smog certificate to register my car. (The visual inspection is part of the smog certification process here, along with the "sniffer" part of the test where emissions are measured from the tailpipe.) The good news is that here in California a smog check is not required until 4 years after the model year, (which will be 2006 for me) and I believe the law for this just changed on the January first and now the first smog check is not required until 6 years after model year. I won't have to worry about this until 2008.
