My Mazda 3 5-door with the auto tranny whistles when driving. This begins at around 30 mph and continues to around 55. There are no other symptoms, fluid is topped off and is in like new condition and it makes no difference if I'm shifting the gears myself or the tranny is in full auto mode. The transmission seems to be working perfectly, it just whistles while it works.

The dealer agrees with me that it is transmission noise, the techs think that it's the noise of the fluid passing through the valves and such, while I think that it's more of a gear whine. They test drove another 3 and found that it too made the whistle, though not as loud as mine.

Either way, it's on record that I have this noise, so I'll be covered if a problem crops up later. I'm just curious if anyone else has a whistling 3.

Well, the tranny does indeed whistle, dude, I'm just so pleased that you "dont think the tranny whistles", how would you know? Trust me I have a whistle, both the dealer's techs and I can hear it, and all evidence points to the transmission.

"how in the hell are you going to hear it if your driving"...easy, you listen. That's what those flappy things on the side of your head are for. Oh, that should be spelled "you're" not "your", BTW.

"If its bad take to the dealer and have it checked out!" The car has been to the dealer, READ my post next time before replying.

I'm getting a whistling sound as well, especially when is cold. And that "clunk" fro 1st to second when it is cold...jeez! I'm going to check it all out--thanks for telling me you've got it, too!

I haven't noticed a whistle here, but I'll see what I can hear when I am out and about tomorrow.

Anitajoe: I would recommend grounding the throttlebody to the neg post on the battery to help reduce the huge "clunk" of shift when you go from first to second. I did this a few months ago and it's helped a lot. Still there, but reduced from what it once was.

Some Mazda transmisions have a hard shift from 1st to 2nd gear when cold. It's the nature of the beast, so try to get used to it since there is no fix.

The Mazda transmission in my ZX2 did the same thing, and for everybody that owned an atx (Mazda) ZX2 transmission. My 3's atx does the same thing when cold, but shifts like butter after it warms up driving a mile or less.

my 2000 ES whistles under hard acceleration, some kid asked me if it was a turbo. LOL its loud enough to hear from a distance.. I thought it was a vacuum leak somewhere but I can't find one anywhere.. and the intake hoses don't seem to be sucking air in from anywhere either... I put the front end up on jack stands and blocked the rear tires and did a few "normal" accelerations up to 50 and nothing, then did one WOT and heard it again, so I had someone else do a WOT and I checked the front, it sounds like its coming from under the engine... so I'm still stumped... I'd take it to a dealership, but $$$$ talks :(

Could it be the same thing as Rich V's problem???

I've heard the engine whistle when it's cold out.

Started around 3000rpm or so, not that loud, easily hidden by the radio.

Well, My tranny doesn't whistle but YES I definitely hear the "clunk" sound when shifting from parking to 1st or cold engine. Its quite annoying..As if the brake calipers were stuck...don't know. Any info on this will be appreciated.

Thanks and good luck

Could be a skim of rust on the rotors. I've noticed that these rotors begin to rust VERY quickly. Might even be enough to make the pads stick overnight.

I haven't noticed anything with my mtx but I'm used to driving older vehicles, so a lot of minor things escape my attention.
