Same chassis and engine. Different interior/exterior but sportier suspension and bit of more engine growl. Too bad we didn't get the redesigned Mondeo/Contour.

it is a damn shame that we don't get the mondeo. the new focus looks pretty cool, also.

I've always wanted the Mondeo over here, though I'd prolly never get one, it'd still be nice, cause I see how well they do in the racing series etc...they seem like pretty nice cars....Euro ford always seems to be miles better than US ford

yeah I was just about to say....we did get the mondeo...it was the contour. I also owned a 2000C-svt. I was one of the very first Vortech supercharged C-svt's. I think I got kit number 3. They were nice but stock for stock left a little to be desired.

I owned a MSP and now the contour. Really Contour is a fun car to drive, I love the duratec. The sounds it makes is just awesome.

yeah, mine had the borla with no resonator....around 7500rpms was really nice! even better with the vortech whine under the hood

wow.. that does look quite nice for a ford.. it doesn't bear too much resemblance to a 6 which I like :) I want my 6 to be unique

The design has alot of euro flavor in it kinda like what the Jetta should have looked like.

Where did you get that the Mondeo uses the same platform as the Mazda6?

Honestly, I don't know too much about the Mondeo, but from what I do know, the Mondeo has nothing related to the Mazda6 in anyway platform-wise. I even have a few of the latest-gen Mondeo's suspension schematics (unfortunately I can't show them to the public), and it's far different to the Mazda6 one. On the engine front, there are a few common engines, 2 diesels and some gasoline engines may share the same block but that's it.

There are discussions about merging the Mondeo and Mazda6 onto the same platform, and it does make sense, but that's more in terms of the future (not the current-gen).

damn those side makers are hot...too bad nobody has the part #s for them!

I think its common knowlege that the mazda6 is built off the Jaguar X-type and the Jaguar X-type is based off the Mondeo.

Just like how the Volvo s40, Mazda3, Mazda5 and the new focus is built off the same platform to save money and RD.

Looks like the ford fusion is bacially redesigned Mondeo with a streched chassis.

Sorry, I don't believe that at all, you'll have to provide concrete evidence for me to change my mind on this one (and I know quite a bit about the Mazda6 platform).

Mazda is Ford's "center of excellence" in two primary areas. These being in C/D platforms (Mazda6 platform) and in large 4-cylinder engines (the family whose largest variant is the 2.3l). As a result of being the "center of excellence" in these areas, Mazda shares the platform and it's being applied to some 10 Ford vehicles (Ford Fusion, and some SUV's to come). And in regards to the engine family, I've explained how Mazda was the "center of excellence" in this post: http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=56563

The Mazda3 is different - that platform was a complete joint development by the 3 brands. The difference between the Mazda3 platform and engines in the above post actually demonstrates the difference between a joint venture versus the "center of excellence". There was no "center of excellence" on the Mazda3 platform (again, it was joint), whereas in cases of a "center of excellence", that brand does the entire design and it is then given to other brands which then individually modify it for their application.

Disclaimer: I'm not trying to come on aggressive and argumentative, but there are a lot of rumours around the Mazda6 platform - it's almost as if many couldn't believe Mazda could come up with something so good that it'd be used around the Ford family like this. But it is that good, and Ford has now recognized how good Mazda is. In fact, Mazda will be the "center of excellence" for the next-gen B platform (Mazda2). The current Mazda2 was a joint development with Ford of Europe (so situation similar to the Mazda3 platform), but Ford has given Mazda full leadership for the next-gen.

Ok, my final post on this topic. I'm not a fan of BlueOvalNews, but this article is pretty good and some things have really happened which this article predicted:

http://www.blueovalnews.com/2004/pag/jag.remaking020804.htm

So, a potential next-gen X-Type going to a Mazda6 platform, which is allegedly already based on the current X-Type?

Again, I just want to set the record straight as there's a ton of incorrect rumours about Mazda6 platform, Mazda3 platform, the 2.3l engine family, etc... I've set it straight with that sticky in regards to the Mazda3 and the engines and I'm trying to set it straight with the Mazda6 platform.

The current X-Type is based on a modified current-gen Mondeo platform though, I agree with that.

The mazda 6 was a brand new car for mazda from frame up the platform on which it was built will be shared with mutiple ford, mercury, jaguar, and probably some others but it is the first on its platform it does not sit on a x-type platform the new x-type will sit on its platform the only thing right now similar between the two is the duratec motor
