What all manual tranny's will fit into a protege with the 2.0? I'm out looking for a manual to swap into my auto and need to know what all my options are.

Sell your car and buy one with a manual transmission.

many reasons i cannot do that.

1. I only payed $3k for mine (it was totaled when i bought it)
2. it has a rebuilt title, i will get nothing for it
3. I have done WAY to much to this car to everstart over
4. selling a car just to replace it with a manual is crazy talk. The swap will be a piece of cake. I am currently converting my 86 323 sedan, into an all wheel drive turbo with the help of a donar 323 GTX. I'm cutting out and swapping the floor pans to accept the all wheel drive stuff. They never offered my body style in an all wheel drive turbo. Just the front drive GT turbo. So i'm gonna make it myself!

If you are mechanically inclined then you shouldn't have a hard time with the tranny swap. There have been a couple of wrecked P5s. Get the numbers to the junkyards they are at and see how much they want for the tranny.

I will do that!

I also thought about just buying a newer regular protege with about 10k or less on it, then swapping the trannys in our cars, then just sell off the other one.

G15 and G25M-R are both options, I beleive, but it seems that the G25 and G15 share gearing, except for 5th gear on the G25 being a higher ratio, 0.795:1 as opposed to 0.755, and 4th is a little shorter, too. Seems like the G25M-R had shorter gearing up high, which makes me assume it's more designed for winding up, which is apropos, since the G25 was mated to the BP 1.8L. Alternatly, I thought it was used for the probe, too, but I may have been wrong! However, the Probe/GT may have had a larger wheel/tire diameter, which changes the gearing, as well.

I work at a salvage yard from what our system is telling me is that the lower half of the engine block is different between the AT & MT.

According to that post, you don't need the block/engine. Not sure, though.

I think SenorCorwin on the boards has done the swap, as well, some time last month. Maybe PM him?

yea its nothing easy... never got it done due to lack of funding. Im start a diffrent project acutally. All 2.0 motors in a protege share the same trannies... Its really not that tuff hardest thing to get out is the mounts. I know a car that it ran before parts were taking out but everything you need is there...

I'd be interested in either of your cars you know of. Please let me know all about them if you can.

well the main one im thinking of if it still exsits is the one i have the ecu, shifter and linkage from... hes in FL but if you can find a trucker thatll ship it you could prob pick it up cheap. His name is mackdadum on the forum and he has a part out thread if you search. Ill see what i can find.

Ok, i guessed you were talking about mackdadum. Ive talked to him b4 about his car he's parting out. Last i heard he wanted $1500 for what was left, or he was going to just send it to the junkyard, where he would have got about $75 for it. So i offered him $500 and i would just come pick it up. He said no, because he knew the parts were worth more than that, he just didnt have anyway to remove them. So i dont know where he stands now. I'll pm him again.

I could be wrong but I don't think you can just swap the tranny from auto to manual. I recently replaced the motor in my 02' and the block is different on the manual 2.0 than the auto. Doesn't mean its impossible though, but it might cost more than its worth.

there is a trans. at a salvage yard in your state Evansville IN. I think they want @ 750.00. you might want to check with them they might have the rest of the parts you need. Liberty Auto Salvage

In your case, you might have some difficulty, as the Sedan is about one foot longer towards the rear than the Hatch.

Then theres the differences with the strut towers, and the front frame assembly. Shouldn't be too difficult if you know what you're doing.

Got any pics of the work being done?

Ive got body shop blueprints of both cars, and it really doesnt appear to be that hard. I dont have any pics as that car has been on hold from my MP5 project (it was not a turbo when i got it, and not to mention totaled when i bought it)

why dont you jsut get lentech to rebuild your auto tranny to hold more power.. that would be the most logical way..

trbomp5
01-07-2005, 09:06 AM
lentech=$3000 and suposed to hold up to about 250whp

manual with a LSD, mazdaspeed axles, and a really good clutch = about $1000 and will hold more HP and be a hell of a lot more fun to drive
