Hey everyone,

Lately, my engine has been acting a little weird. Every morning, I warm up my car before I head out to campus. I usually wait until the RPM's are either at or under 1000. The temperature is around 30-40 F outside. So when I put the car in reverse to back out, my RPM's drop to hte point where it almost feels like the engine is going to cut off. I get a little "knock" in the engine. Any ideas of what is going on?? Also, how long would you suggest that I warm up my car, in terms of rpm's? Thanks for the help in advance.

Check your EGR

the manual tell you to not let the car idle for a long time and one of the guys at the dealer said let the car warm up until the needle is between 1500 and 1000 and about two to three minutes the car should be warmed up. also, dont do any high reving, like over 3krmp. that's what i do in the morning before i head to school.

not let the car idle for too long? Why not? Nothing bad wont happen to the car... As far as Warming up the car (Auto or stick) warm it up on cold mornings/nights/whenever for 2-3 minutes and then drive and as pointed out above while the car is not fully warmed up and you are driving it, dont rev above 3k rpm as the oil in the engine is not at its hot stage.

i let mine idle for a minute or two anytime i'm not in a real big hurry. it seems to run better. still stay out of the rpms when cold, either way.

that is exactly how it starts. Soon, the knock will be constant when you are just maintaining speed or letting off the gas to shift. Then your engine will cease to run. Get it looked at NOW! I learned the hard way and mine is now out of warranty. I now need an entire short block!!!

Thanks for all of the replies,

From your replies, I've learned to let the car warm up 2-3 minutes before I take off in the morning. Alright, I'm kinda worried about this tiny knock i get when I shift into reverse. Also, I drive an automatic 2001 ES Protege. I don't know what an EGR is so I cannot check it. Would anyone recommend taking this in to a dealer to get it checked out?? I dont really have the cash right now to pay for expenses but if it is absolutly necessary, I can do it.

yeah i drive the same thing man, and im also getting worried about this noise im hearing when i put the car in reverse, it makes this sort of soft chirping noise. but when i put it in park, the noise goes away, and when im driving it there is no noise, so i don't know if it's because of the cold weather or because its getting old? i don't know, please give me advice thanks.
