I have a chance to buy a nice 1991 929 for almost nothing and I'm thinking about doing it as a beater while I finish building my P5. I just wanted to see if anyone had any experience with them.

this is a 1991 929 with the 3.0L DOHC RWD automatic tranny. Leather interior, cd player (blah) etc.....owner says the exhaust is loud so I'm anticpating making a new exhaust for it.

A couple of people in the neighborhood have 'em. Can't say enough good thing about 'em.

When my bud Chris was the head of marketing for Mazda I called him because I had seen my first 929 on the highway. I asked him why Mazda would make such a fat, bloated, ugly POS and he laughed and agreed.

They made it to compete with the American trend of RWD big sedans like the Caprice and Impala in the late 80's, early 90's.

Fat and bloated is a little harsh considering that they don't weigh anymore than the present day Eclipses. It's still heavy by sportscar standards, but it wasn't built to be a sportscar...kind of like the Protege5.

Uh yea...

Unfortunately, those are the 1st Gen 929's. The 2nd Gen's like I believe you are looking at were all automatics and as you know much more flowing body lines.

the first gen is what I'm looking to buy...the 2nd gens look just like the last Millenia's available.

i think you guys are missing the point though....this is a beater for me while I finish my p5...I was just curious to see if anyone actually owned one or drove one.

Even my 88 323 Wagon is getting a nice set of 1st Gen RX-7 wheels for Christmas and probably new Konis and lowering springs for my birthday. I'm still looking for a B6T motor for it.

Here's the plan...

Get the 1st Gen 929
Get a 2nd Gen RX-7 manual tranny...assuming you aren't getting 1 of the 200 manual 929's shipped to the US which already have the RX-7 tranny.
Find a 13bet and bolt that in there
Turbo upgrade

350hp+ in a sleeper 929..that still has room for the baby seat. My local junkyard has a 1st Gen 929...I wonder how much they want for it.

Note to self----hurry up and finish the RX-7 so I can build something else.

while thats a nice thought I think you guys are STILL missing the point....THIS is the beater while I build my P5...you've got it a little backwards. Besides the 929 has an automatic in it.

P5 plans:

Extrude Hone stage 2 Port and polish on the head and intake manifold WITH gasket matching.

Wagner forged shortblock at 9:1 cr

WOMP supercharger at 12psi w/ FMIC

MSP tranny upgrade (just want the diff and axles)

possible tranny upgrade.

I guess Im one of the 200 lucky prolly 20 left with a 929 5 speed, what do you know aboutt his tranny and its production ??? Ive been tryin to find out how many 929 came with 5 speed in 88 and 89 seperatly ???

Im still planning a 13B turbo upgrade or maybe the 2L V6 JFT turbo sometime in the future to get at least 400HP but fro now Ill just get used to the aprox 185HP I got outta my SOHC 3L, but for sure its faster than a stock 929S with the DOHC 3L

oh yeah mine weighs about 3218lbs so it aint that heavy...

It should be the exact same tranny as the 2nd Gen RX-7. There are a few people over at rx7club.com who are very knowledgeble about the 929. You might find some info there.

I already knew that my 929 has the FC tranny, do you know if the rear end is the same ? aswell as gearing and LSD I hit 221kms/hr and was wondering if 250 is possible ? I cant find no info on that

I already had a thread on the RX7 clubs forums a year ago, it was 25 pages and only one other guy, he doesnt know

Best thing I can say do at this point is to go to your dealer and see if any of the RX-7 rearend parts are the same part#. Small things like rearend seals that are the same for both rearends might be a clue to other things being the same.

Hey people, i have just got myself hold of a 929 hcfs with a JFT 5spd manual in it. It goes good, only problem is i want to work on it, and parts are very hard to come across. Anyone have any idea where i could get any bits and pieces from? Cheers

929 motors are pretty robust. its the rest of the car that falls apart.

Eventually after i get it over the pits, i would be after a cold air intake for it, possibly a new intercooler (dunno how that would work cuz the radiator takes up all the room), new exhaust, possibly a new gearbox (it has a 2nd gen rx7 gearbox in it - very crap), and just little shit for it like new locks etc.

The JFT was the factory 2.0L turbo 90 degree V6.

You have a very rare car and honestly something I've been looking for. There were only 200 manual tranny 929s imported to the US.

Yeh I'm in Australia, i bought it for $500 but it had some panel damage, it's coming along slowly. So does anyone know where I can get things for it as mentioned above? Thanks guys ur being real helpful hey.

They also came out as the JDM Luce in Japan with the 13b turbo, and the 3.0L DOHC V6 auto.....i have no idea how many jft manuals were shipped to Australia.....would be cool to get some facts, I have never seen ANY in Perth (Western Australia).

The 5speed 929 were very rare in all models, in Japan they were only found in the 13B and JFT models, and in US/Canada the were found with the 3L SOHC V6 models and again very very rare, ive only seen one other 5speed and it was an 88 so I guess Im lucky.

BTW that 200 number is a low estimate maybe its 400-500 hundred but im unsure, Ive been tryin to find out for years

here is a JFT from Japan if youre tryin to get ideas on an intake, all you need is an adapter plate for the intake, and fabricate a heat shield if u want
