More specifically, my clutch is slipping, in 1st when I step on it hard. I haven't even put any real go fast parts on yet, I guess I just beat the hell out of my clutch too much. Only 16k on it. Is this the beginning of the end for my clutch? Sucks, there are so many other parts I wanted to buy for my car, now I'm probably gonna have to spend about 500(i think?) on a new clutch.

you just made your 666th post..... i would say just due to that fact your clutch is f00ked!

if it makes you feel any better, my stocker was gone at 12k.
i replaced it with an act stage two that decided to shatter in to sixty pieces and now have a spec stage three that slips when dropped in first and in to second on rare occasion.

32K miles, no problems thus far. I don't baby it either.

i think mine is going too at 18K. When i am going from first to second(spiritedly) i'll have the clutch half depressed and a good amount of throttle then when i let the clutch out the car shudders, i just starting noticing it. Does that sound like the clutch?

I read things like this all the time.
Why do you have a 'good amount of throttle' with the 'clutch half depressed' when going from 1st to 2nd?
The only time you should have ANY throttle with the clutch partially engaged is from starting from a stop.
This could be the reason why your clutch is starting to go at such a low mileage.

maybe i worded it wrong, and i know what you're talking about, but that's not the case. When 'a good amount of throttle' is being applied the clutch is all the way in. Maybe a better way to say it was that when i transition from full clutch engagement to no engagement the car shudders right before disengagement.

Still having trouble figuring out what you mean. Just to make sure we're on the same page --
Clutch fully engaged - clutch pedal all the way out
Clutch partially engaged - clutch pedal partly in
Clutch fully disengaged - clutch pedal all the way in to the floor
So are you applying throttle with the clutch fully disengaged when shifting from 1st to 2nd? If so, this will also cause clutch wear, because the RPMs need to drop, not rise, to match up to the next gear. If you're in 1st gear at 4K, disengage clutch, shift into 2nd, apply throttle, and engage clutch, you will be slipping the clutch because of the difference in RPMs....you should be around 2-2.5K or so to match the RPMs properly.
Any time you engage the clutch with the RPMs not matched (too high or too low, doesn't matter), some clutch disc wear will occur.

Maybe i'm backwards then, once again. Also, i always match the rpms.

Does anyone else get shuddering when down shifting from 5th to 4th around 40 or 50 mph?
Mine does it while I let the clutch out, only for a brief second though.

did you guys break in the clutch properly? From what i hear you shouldnt hit gears with it until u have gone at least 500kms or something. I know hit second going full throttle the second I left the dealership, the guy who sold me it was laughing as I fly by squelling out everywhere in my brand new ms lol it was like a movie or something lol stopped beating on it after that till like 600kms, still holds at 14psi after 36,xxxk.

I have a CM stage I clutch in my P5 and have 10K on it. Drive it pretty hard (not abusing) and have had no problems with it....i have read many negative comments about CM and i like seeing these good ones, too.

so.......now that the time is drawing near for a replacement, which one should I go with.... I drive my car everyday, so I'm thinking a 4-puck would be a pain in the ass, other than that I've thought about the ACT 6-puck or the street clutch, but don't really know what else is out there for the car. Some people mentioned the CM clutches, but I have never heard of them. Any info is greatly appreciated.

from what i've found searching around on the same topic, SPEC is the best, and Clutchmasters and ACT are not so good. Here's some with first hand experience for them:

most ya'll problems sound pretty normal to me....it happens....we just have a light and agile car and you have to have a lot of skill to drive it. (not that i am saying i have the skill at all). However, today i kinda pounded into first off a light racing an rx7. I spun like a bitch, then shifted up to 2nd and again went pretty hard. Weird thing happened. It slipped off of first wierd, the RPMs stayed high (5000-ish), and then when i entered into second, the clutch just stuck to the floor -- with the RPMs sticking high. it stayed like this for a bit...and then i just said screw it and depressed the clutch and just stopped going hard. afterward, my car smelled like shit (from the engine bay). And now, upon fully entering into 1st gear, just before that point of letting out the clutch all the way, the car 'hitches' and feels weird with very little pull at all. It seems find, 'cept that. Not sure what a burnt clutch feels like....but any clue what the hell i did? i have less than 9k on my baby...

Act sux. I replaced the stock clutch when I broke the diff (2 time)with act street clutch. 5k miles later I blew the motor and act was slipping with the slicks. I put the stock clutch back in.

Exedy has a clutch coming out soon. Exedy claims it holds 315 lbs of torque or 35% above stock capacity. I can tell you it's some good shit.

i dont know if it is true for the protege as well, i know beau recommends it, but i have heard better things about exedy etc.

I had a SPEC stage II on my SR'd 240 and didn't have any issues. I don't drag race so that may be the big difference maker.
