If you can afford a couple grand, buy a beater to use as your daily driver, and only drive the Pro on the weekends or something. Best way to keep the car in good shape is keep it in the garage. :)

if you've taken decent care of the car, 87k is not high at all for any modern car, let alone a protege. there are a few on this board w/ ~150k on '02s.
i bought my first protege ('90 SE) with 140k on it and sold it w/ 225k...never let me down the entire time i owned it. just keep to the scheduled service and it should last a long time.
the car had 85 when i bought it, so im not sure how well kept up it was, though guy who sold it said it was taken care of. and i def dont have enough $ to buy a new car.

My car just hit 89,300 today while i was on the way to work. Ive taken as good of care of it as I could theres really not much you can do. Might want to take it by Mazda and see what their 90,000 mile service consists of. Its an expensive service but it should cover all the bases.
anyone know what this service consists of and how much it goes for.... worth getting?

It depends on the dealership. At ours it includes oil change tire rotation, coolant system flush, B&G induction service, battery terminal cleaning, plugs, some road checks, full detail (in out engine) etc..etc.. it goes for about $400.00 but I work for nissan. Each dealership makes their own services. The mazda dealership in my town pretty much changes the oil, rotates the tires and changes the coolant, does 4 road tests and then charges you the same amount as my work does. Sucky service if you ask me. Call up or go to your local dealership and ask them what it includes and how much it is. The advisors make some good $$ off of the service so they will kiss your ass to get it.

If you can still reach the original owner, might ask if the timing belt has been done yet.
