I am new to owning a stick shift car and just wanted to know what is the lifespan on a clutch with normal driving? I don't ride the clutch or accelerate hard off a stop.
Thanks

With proper driving, 200k miles shouldn't be a problem. Of course, this IS a mazda clutch, so it will shudder forever.

Are Mazda's known for bad clutches? The Miata I drove didn't seem that terrible. Pretty responsive if you ask me :)

what is a good clutch for the protege, does clutchmasters make one?

I had one, it shuttered like a bastard, aviod it.
ACT are good but don't seem to hold the power they advertise.

hey 1sty,
i have had a CM for almost 10K and it has been nice to me....when did you notice the shuttering. you had it on your boosted MP3, right?
what do you think the life of the CM clutch should be. when i had my factory clutch taken out, the tech said it had lots of life left and i had 30K on it. it had some hot-spots on it from getting used hard, but not abused.....
i have read some posts anout the CM clutches being both good and bad.....just want to get a good life-time out of the one i have in my car....thanks

yea i've head good and bad about clutchmasters too. when you all installed your aftermarket clutch could you notice any difference over the factory clutch? was the clutch pedal harder to push in?

The clutchmaster was ALOT harder ot push in then the stock protege. When I had the P5 too and I swapped between cars I would slam the P5's clutch way to hard being used to the MP3. It was even harder then my STi is.
My issue wasn't boost related. It would alwasy shutter when down shifting in low gears. It was best to just ride out the clutch from 3rd to 1st.
The factory clutch just couldn't take the added power, it would just slip. When it was removed it looked perfect.
thats no good with the clutch, i was looking for a nice easy clutch (had to drive mom's p.o.s. subaru with extremely sticky clutch for far to long). Anybody know of a different clutch thats easy to push in?
Thanks for any info.

Yeah, you certainly get used to it. The difference is just very obvious when you swap between an upgraded car and a stock one constantly.
