I have a 99 Protege that i bought new in August of 99. Ever since about 40,000 miles my idle is around 300, its below 500 when warm. I now have 142,000 on it and its still the same. I have had the spark plugs replaced, car checked over by mazda, no deal. It doesnt run bad, gets good gas mileage, but at this point the low idle has caused the engine mounts to get a little worn out.... So now you can feel the engine shake at idle, but its always around 300 when warm, never near 500. Never stalls or anything, could it be the Idle air control valve? My brother explorer had these problems and it was always that.....
