well i only installed the easy on on the fornt of the car. took me all of 5 min to do it. The hip hop is gone!!! woooooohoooooo buuttt the car vibrates and sounds louder due to the mounts. that to be expected. I would say these are a must buy for any one that goes to the track to race. b/c you can buy the mounts just to go to the track. the front one is so easy to change, you can put in the stock mount to drive around and change to the AWR mount to go to the track!!!

did you need a impact to break the bolts loose?

10-27-2002, 10:07 AM
well they were very tight!! but my solution was to spray DW-40 on the nuts. then i took a 1/2" drive socket wrentch and took a piece of cooper piping and put it over the handle to the socket wrentch so it made the handle longer. it's plain physics. longer handle equal less force needed.
once i did that the nuts came off pretty easy.
So only with the front one it make a big difference!!! It's interesting.......

hey stou.
It's the front motor mount that is has all the give it in. the back one is very stiff. You should look at the fron one. it takes 5 min to take off. 3 botls and it's slides right out. and then you will know what i'm talking about.

oh yeah and the vibration at idle. I LOVE IT. it give it more of a race car feel. that roughness of the idle that you feel in most V8 and race cars. call me weird but i like it. lol

Hmm...I have both mounts in and they are great! The hop is gone but I feel that it could be better if we had lighter wheels. I feel the racing harts are too heavy. But the AWR Mounts are the shit (thumb)

that why they made credit cards. the only thing is pay it off once when rack up the debt. lol
but linux just buy installing the front will do wonders for you. thrust me i know.
Can one buy just the front engine mount from one of these performance supliers?
I don't want to get in to the mission of changing the rear one if is not going to make that much of a difference, right?

i don't think you can only buy one. but who knows maybe you can. you have to ask. but i would say 135 is worth just the one mount
I just received my AWR engine mounts today from Protege5online. They look very nice:

I also received the steering single gauge pod.
I'll try to install that stuff on the week-end!

I have both mounts in my 2001 LX ,As people have said the front is easy . The rear however is a pain to change with the engine in ,good news it can be done ,I did it .
You will need to a few people to help . First jack the car up as high as you can support with jack stands . For tools you will need a 17mm inpact universal socket and varios extensions .
Step 1 .remove the intake hose from the TB to the MAS ,this allows access to the main wire harness, there you will find a plastic bracket that is held on with 10mm nuts ,remove these . Then pull the wire harness out of the way .
Step2 using the 17mm universal socket and the extensions losen the 17mm nuts .
Step 3 From under the car there are 3 bolts in the trans that must removed ,used your 17mm socket and an air gun ( theses suckers are tight )to losen the bolts . remove the bolts .
step4 Back up top remove the 3 17mm nuts
Step5 go back underneath the car ,there is a 10mm bolt that must be removed from the lower bracket then you can remove the assembly with some twisting and swearing the mount and bracket will come out . Put on the new mount . And reverse what you did. This is were the extra people come in you need 4 hand to put it back together.

The one closest to the front of the car ,or rather the mount near the rad .
Duh! On the picture, not the car!

I'm ordering my mounts in the next week. I'm excited to see how they'll help with the feel and hop.
FREAK! This is going to really add to my pile of uninstalled parts. Right now I'm looking at the new downpipe, kartboy bushings, Greddy turbo timer, and soon I'll be looking at the mounts and a clutchmasters clutch/fidanza flywheel.

I really have enjoyed mine they are great. I don't even feel the vibration anymore. For you guys that are doing this upgrade be ready for a change on the take off and going through the gears. The car will feel like it really wants to move, wait that might be my turbo.
Ooh and Stou it will not eliminate all of the wheel hopping but it does help.

Stou? hehee Who's Stou?
Yer talking to the one and only smp here buddy ;)
Yessir, I'm looking forward to the LSD, now that will get rid of this darn wheel hopping.
I'm getting mine in 2 weeks, I can't wait!
I'm only getting the front one, I hope it still make a difference...

I got the motor mounts put in in August or so. They're not AWR, btw, they're mazda motorsports.
Anyway, yeah, I just have the front one put in, but it does make my car rattle like an SOB. It's kind of annoying, but it defintely reduced hop.
Honestly, I really wish they made thema little SOFTER than it is, so it'd vibrate less. That way I'd put them both in, not just the front one.
Man, I can't believe you turbo guys were running stock motor mounts! Ugh. They're terrible in the rain especially.
Macklum, thanks for the hint about the back engine mount installation.
Mikemazda, that's exactly what I thought. I found one think about the wheel hopping, I think a big part of the wheel hopping come from our heavy Racing Hart wheels. I installed my winter wheels, which are 14" steel rim and are lot lighter than the Racing Hart wheels and that make a big difference on the hopping.
I'll install the front engine mount today.

I just had a thought ,for those of you that would like to save the money and can do without a car for a few days .
Remove stock motor mounts ,clean them well with a good degreaser ,then fill the holes in the mounts with silicone are urathane (the stuff they use on windsheild ) .you will have to build it up in layers . I think this will give up a stiffer than stock mount but nat as stiff as the AWR or Mazdaspeed mounts .
Tha's a good idea Macklum. I know that some shop do some "Insert" parts that can be add to an original mount. I saw that somewhere......

personally the vibration isnt bad to me. feels like mild classic muscle car (now if only i could have the same amount of power)
I installed the front one, very easy. It's hard to realy tell the difference right now because we had some snow here. The vibrations is not that bad. I can live with that, no problem.
I did some test spining the wheels in the snow and it look good. I'll see when I'll find some dry road!
I checked for the back engine mount, and this is definitely a couple of hours job with some help. I'll do it when I'll got time..... and a friend available for help.

Good luck on the back mount that one is a pain in the well you know I have been sayijng it to everyone that has attempted this install. Good luck Stou:D
Yea, I know what you mean.... I'm not in a hurry to change the back one. I'll probably wait to do it next summer. Anyway in winter with all the snow here, I probably will not see the difference.
Maybe if I get a LSD, I'll do the back engine mount when I'll install the LSD.
So would you guys say the upgrade is worth it? ( Just the front one though)

i would have to sa....well....umm
HELL YEAH!!!
because it helps the wheel hop, buuuuut also the front one is so easy to change. So maybe one day you hanging out with you g/f and don't want the car shaking like a mo fo you can take out the awr mount (asuming you only have the front one in) and put the stock one back in under 8 min. maybe the next day your gonna go out to the track you can put them back in. thats the best part.
well that my opinion.

Like i said before, Mazda Motorsports makes the mounts. It's just that AWR can sell them to you.

You can get the mounts from Tony at AWR the shop is near my home he is a good guy, knows his shit about mazdas. if you can get a few more people in on a group buy he might come down on the price but if you need them now you can go th his web site AWRracing.com or call @ (760) 598-9782

did anybody notice a difference in accelleration? did it feel faster off the line or does anyone have numbers with just the motor mounts. im thinking about getting them. my roomate has a protege es and i always get off the line but if i could get him even more i would be better.
I found a place where I can buy only the front one. I don't want to change the rear one bacause it's too dificult to change, and adds more vibration to the car. If I was racing it, maybe.
The front one is about $65 plus shipping. It's the next item on the list of mods.
I just finished installing my short ram last night, and it makes such a BIG difference! I highly reccomend anyone with an MP3 or MP5 to get one - well worth it.
I'm really happy with my purchase(yippy)

where can I get a front motor mount....I live in Vancity BC canada?
I'm not sure how these group buys work, so by all means, any advise will be welcome.
I'm thinking of placing the order the 2nd week of 2003...
Let me know who's interested, maybe we can get the front one for $50 or so each plus shipping.
I would be in on a group buy for the front mount..Are the rear ones available seperate also? In case I want to do it down the line...
The rear one along with the front one is $135 plus shipping. I'm not really interested in doing the rear one because of the complications, and what's involved in replacing it.
So the group buy will be ONLY for the front one.
Who else is interested?

I would be in for the front one but it might be a good idea to buy both. You never know when a oppertunity to put it in easy will come along. But I will go group buy for the front one.

Since you're ordering new ones for the side why don't you ask Mazda to get you the MSP #3 mount (passenger side). There was a post on protegeclub from theMan about it making the feel much better and really helping with limiting the twisting motion of the engine.
