I'm about to change my oil here in a couple minutes... I've got 11,7xx miles. What oil should I use?

10w30 conventional oil ($1/qt)
unless you plan on pushing your engine HARD
then buy synthetic ($5/qt)

I thought that the Protege5 used 5W-30? Or does it not really matter too much?

I use Mobil 1 5W-30. I have heard other people say to use 10W-30 in the winter. Is there any truth to that?

Preferably new oil. I'd run 5W-30 tho..
FYI, 5W-30 in the winter 10W-30 in the summer. Or run 5W-30 year round.

Thanks for the tip. I wasn't really sure. I plan on just running the 5W-30.

I use 10w30 mobil one, and thats what i have always used. Its just a temp range if you look in the manual it explains it to you. I also have a ranger that i have had since i was 15 and it now has about 135k on it stock engine and tranny, and trust me that truck was abused badly since it was my first car. It still runs strong, at least as good as day one. It actually starts faster/easier than my p5. But everyone has thier preferences. I used to work in a machine shop rebuilding engines and a guy that worked there swore by using different oils in the summer/winter but its not required. But either will work and you wont tell the diff between 5w or 10w

Yeah, you really don't need different oil for the W/S. The W in the oil weight means "winter" In theory, the 5W-30 would give a slight increase in performance and economy.

um yea i think u misread the 5w for summer and 10 w for winter. the 5 and 10 is basically refering to thickness so you would want to use a heavier wieght oil in the summer since it will get hotter and thin. in the winter a lighter weight is better because it is cold and better for startups

Just did first change at 730 miles. Put in Castrol Syntec 5w-30. In what looks to be brass filings and aluminum bits in the used oil and in the pleats of the filter, as well as in the bottom of the plastic filter canister, I wish I'd done it sooner! Kinda gives credence to the guy that says change it after the first twenty (20) miles. And the dealer said to wait for 5,000 miles, yea, right...do they think we're morons?

Yeah you're a smart. I did mine after 1000 and all my friends said I was stupid to do it so soon until they saw the gunky oil and torn up filter and all the little pieces of stuff in it.
