View Full Version : Making my protege and FR

I was seriously considering making my 1st gen protege RWD. I was looking at it the other day, and well I have the resources, and the car is pretty much set up for it. I honestly don't mind investing the time and money to drop a V6 in my car, and making it RWD.
I know to some of you this may sound ridiculous and outright stupid, but it would be a great project. The only thing I was worried about were motor mounts. Where would be a good place to find motor mounts for my car, that would support a small V6?
Also, I would like to know what some of you think about me wanting to do this to my car. I think it would throw a lot of people off to see my little car drifting, and roasting rubber.
Also, what years did they have the protege AWD? I know they had it in 1991, which is what year my car is...undefined

how much do you plan on spending, it WILL be expensive, also who is doing the work, hopefully you, or you will get raped in custom parts..

Rx-7 drivetrain in a nice little protege! Sounds fun, but that will definatly take some serious time and effort. Good luck to you and i hope you can pull it off FreshPrince

meh, I'd rather have the rx-7 than a protege sitting on an rx-7

I came asking a simple question, and I got nothing but off topic responses. Can I have help? Or are you guys just going to criticize me, I really had faith in the forum.
Alright, for the parts I have a connection in San Francisco for the motor, tranny, driveshaft and rear end.
As for the work, my best buddy and I are going to do it. We have all the needed resources, and chances are we will end up sleeping in the shop we will be working at...ahaha

what are you talking about, the 12a out of a rx7 will be the easiest of any motor swap, the V6 is a lot bigger

you will need lots of custom parts which will get expensive, DS, axles, motor/tranny mounts, etc...that's just the beginning
If your goin to make the protege RWD....you would get it done alot easier with a 4WD protege..instead of the Fwd..but if u find a 4wd pro..u might as well leae it 4wd....but it would be easier with a 4wd pro. It ouwld be nice to see a Kl-ze or KF - ze 4wd protege..
But there is a guy who converted his escort GT to RWD, using a miata drivetrain...but its a drag car. It has the original Escort GT BP, just converted to RWD to solve traction issues.i
Check it out:

His car made 540+ hp last time i heard....its one of the baddest EGT's ive seen..and the baddest BP's out there.
In all reality its not too far feached..If u have access to the equipment it could be done.
94-up Miata Tranny - 200$
94-up Miata driveshaft - 100$
94-up Miata Rear End - 100$
KL-ZE v6 2.5/KF-ZE v6 2.0/BPT complete - 1000$+
or a NA BP - 300$-500$
Body modifications - Alot of $$$$ hopefully free if u do it yourself.(space on the floor board for the driveshaft - Rear end - tranny) And mounts for the RWD motor (the easiest part)
its not impossible...it owuld be nice if someone did it..

About custom parts, what parts would be needed besides mounts? The rear end and driveshaft I have set up....

You know, there actually wouldn't be any need for body modifications. If you have a 1st gen, look at the floorboard. You should see a hump there, that is for the driveshaft. That makes things a lot easier...
Well, the 91 may be different...
I'm not too sure...
about the floor...the 4wd proteges have a different floor board for the driveshaft...But, i think the 4wd driveshaft goes down the floor board on the passenger side instead of down the middle..
The firewall might need to be modded for the tranny...most of it will be body

expensive...
I would rather just by a RX7 or miata..
both of which will run circles around you in the 1/4 and the autox/track..
So to me it makes no sense.

yeah, but for the sake of a project and the props you'd get when you're done would be worth it. A lot of people don't mod cars to be faster, they mod cars because they want to.
I wanna build a kit car eventually.. not to be fast on the track, or for a good showcar... just for the sake of building something.
I'm looking forward to seeing what'll happen.

It's already been done. Guy in Australia has a Turbo II motor in a 1st gen. I'll try and find the webpage.
