maybe someone can help me out here...

has anyone had our head unit out of the dash (i would assume so!)?

owuld it be feasible to connect a amp/sub out of an MP3 to the stock head unit? i really like the way the head unit is designed (simple, easy to see and use), and would prefer to keep it if possible. any info would be appreicated.

with an ES i assume you have the stock double din unit. the only way to connect an external amp to the stock head unit is drop the rear deck speakers and use either an amp that has speaker inputs or a line level converter that converts speaker level inputs to RCA's.

Short answer...The stock head unit has no RCA outputs. You could hook up an amp subwoofer combo using a line level converter and tapping into the rear speakers. It works but its kinda hoaky. In my opinion, the sound quality of the stock head unit is seriously bad. Though the layout is good. I would recommend changing to something different. Unless your going for a low budget, medium FI setup.

I used to be a "want to keep the stock head unit" kinda guy myself. But I found the one in the Protege crappy beyond my wildest expectations.
