View Full Version : Are my rotors warped?

Hey guys, I'm sure this will come accross as a noob question but I am getting lots of noise when I'm breaking from what seems be the front brakes. Is this what happens when your rotors are warped? What does "warped rotors" mean anyway? Please excuse my utter lack of mechanical knowledge.

warped rotors are caused by such high and hard braking that it heats the rotor and warps it.
Warped rotors- go 70mph and brake hard. if your car pulses or feels like crap, you have warped rotors.
you also could need new brake pads. Noise occurs when you need new pads because a change in material when you get low.

front warped-pulse in sterring wheel under hard breaking
rear warped-pulse felt in whole car under hard breaking
squell- replace pads.when your pads get low a metal strip contacts the rotor, and screams at you to let you know"relace me soon"

I have 21,000 miles on my car, isn't that a bit early for the break pads to wear down...I mean I don't drive like a complete maniac or anything. Also, thanks for the informative replies.

it could be just a lot of dirt or dust in there

sounds exactly what i had.
and it's more like grinding.
it's NOT because the pads a worn, i had 60% of life on mine.
it's your rotors that are gone.
get some aftermarket ones, u wont regret it.

Almost 50,000 miles here and the brakes are a-ok.
Lots of driving and lots of downshifting :)

My front rotors are warped all to hell. I'm just going to get some nice new slotted rotors and new pads in the spring.

I have a pair of rear rotors, same ones as the pic above from that groupbuy (i bought em a week before the groupbuy, but same ones). I bought em, replaced the front ones, never had time for the rear, and ended up trading in my car last night :o Will sell em cheap if anyone wants just the rears.

we have them made by a Co out here and powerslot slots them for us

Those don't look any different than the rotorworks, and yet you want $50 more for rotors and pads? Oh wait..."powerslots" cut the grooves, ok.

since you brought it up , we use the premium rotors not the cheap chinese ones and we have them drilled and slotted by the pro's, they are cryod treated as well, we see in a few months when the cheaper rotors start cracking. I own a protege and take it out on the track and need good brakes not a set that just looks good on there-

Aren't the really good cross-drilled rotors not really drilled? I thought the high-end ones are cast with the holes to avoid stress fractures later. I'm not challenging, just curious because I read about it on the forums before (can't remember where). I'm not even close to being a brake expert...

did you get that sound at high speed breaking or low speed? when my breaks are hot, they make a grinding sound at low speed breaking. the tech at the dealer said it's just cause the pads are glazed.
Dr.Sound

low speeds.

I had a problem where light breaking would casue a rumbling sound taht was kinda liek water swishing around in a tank....MAzda said i had excess liquid and dirt on my rotors so they machined them a little and everything is fine now.
biochembruin
11-17-2004, 04:16 PM
hm, anyone know what causes glazing of the break pads? is it crappy break pads or crappy rotors? or crappy both? or driving through crap?
Dr.Sound
11-17-2004, 04:19 PM
both are crappy.
wait, u had too much liquid in your rotors, Talrum???
akhilleus
11-17-2004, 04:21 PM
Both, I would recommend changing at least your pads to Hawk or EBC. Having your rotors refinished at the same time is a good idea, new rotors would be nice but probably unnecessary perf. wise...more cosmetic. I think i had a little grinding noise on my p5...got the pads replaced and rotors cut...no noise...the pads werent gone but were low. Hawks all the way!
Dr.Sound
11-17-2004, 04:23 PM
i dont think rotors are cosmetic mods.
my stopping distance is better now.
the wheels dont lock up as fast as they used to on my stock, warped rotors.
EBD and ABS work much better with better rotors.
Talrum
11-18-2004, 03:41 AM
Yea thats what they told me...actually the first dealer i brought it to said the noise was normal...i obviously didn't buy that....the second said my rotors has some sort of liquid film on the rotors.....i didn't really buy that either, i thought my rotors were warped but the problem isnt there anymore.

I know if your rotors are warped the car will shake under high speed braking, but what about low speed?
Ive noticed that when Im braking, just as I come to a stop 5->0mph my car will shake a bit..almost like a lunging back and forth as if its braking fully, then not braking fully, then back and forth again 4 or 5 time till Im stopped....what the hell is that?

^ warpedcool, another thing to add to the dealer's list when I go for an oil change:
Warped Rotors
Cracked Muffler
Pulls to the left
Bubble in right rear tire(has road hazard warranty)
front AND rear lip coming off
Sub enclosure rattling

That jerking might be a malfunctioning ABS or the slide caliper screw is seized. When my rotors were warped it was only at high speeds that you noticed it.
Dr.Sound
11-18-2004, 06:51 PM
i had the jerking at low speeds on BOTH of my MSP's.
after repplacing rotors it stopped.
i've also had the same thing on my old pontiac because of warped rotors.
hey, by the way, do any of u guys know if u can warp drums??

ive been having a problem where i get an annoying squeeling from my front left brake while NOT braking. If i press the brake the sound always goes away, it only happens when im not braking- sometimes its loud as shit and sometimes it doesnt make any noise. Also, my brake light on my dash (same like as parking brake light) comes on after i brake while driving, what gives????

03's had problems with sticking pads.
take it to the dealer.

Are these rotors u sell FC3S stock size? How about just slotted not cross-drilled?
mspeedpro
11-19-2004, 05:52 PM
sticking pad would make a lot of sense-- it would explain why i get the sound sometimes while i am driving. my car has 30k miles on it though, i dont think theyll replace my pads, new pads arent too expensive.

That's what my pops told me too. He said it's cause I overheated the brakes too much. It still stops okay, just makes a scraping noise.

got it, so i guess my rotors aren't warped, but changing to high quality pads and turning the rotors (or changing the rotors rather than turning) will get rid of the problem and keep it from returning.
