Mavs Capture Mutual of Omaha Stampede Title
The UNO hockey team captured its first Maverick Stampede title in five years with a 4-3 victory over Merrimack on Sunday night.

Maverick freshman Bill Thomas was named the tournament's most valuable player with his two-goal performance in the championship game. Thomas gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead in the first period and then scored the game-winning goal with a shorthanded tally at 7:29 of the third period.

It looked as if the Mavs were going to run away with the championship game after Bryan Marshall and Mike Lefley tacked on a pair of goals for a 3-1 lead in the second period. But Merrimack fought back with a goal with one second remaining in the second stanza by Mike Alexiou. The Warriors then tied the score two minutes into the final period on a goal by Jeff Royston.

UNO is 2-0-0 for the first time in school history. Nebraska-Omaha has a bye week next weekend and will open CCHA play with a home series with Western Michigan on October 22-23.
