Immediate Mod possibilities for MSP??? Any thoughts?

Hi, I'm new to this forum just found it a few days ago.... I plan on getting the MSP if I can ever find someone to co-sign a loan for my 19 year old ass.... so that is pending... few left to be had I believe in the area as of tonight :p . Anyhow, any thoughts right out the gates on what we can do to these babies to get better performance?

Everything on the MSP seems so high quality... in stock form that I wouldn't know where to start...

Also can someone explain what we need, or what we need once it comes out to control and up our psi/boost. I know it's called boost control but what exact parts are we looking at in order to carry that out... and how much?

you'll void your warranty installing a boost controller on the MSP. I would wait until the cars warranty is up before I start tampering with anything.

BOV is a good first mod..
but no performace gain...Just a cool sounding Mod.
I'd like to get a Cold air intake in there...but is there even one out on the market for MSP?

If you want to go performace...Gro Harlem is right, wait 'til the warranty is over before you tamper with the turbo..
I think your best bet is to start on the exhuast or something..
headers/mid pipe/ down pipe/ muffler..
Work on that...i think it will pay off with your boost increase with the controller.;)

Any word on when the BOV's are due to be comming in? Also.... when does anyone expect the headers and cat backs to be comming in? Won't they void the warranty as well thought?

BOV's are universal. HKS makes good ones and i'm sure some of us on this board will get one. Exhuast modification should not void warranty. I think it's just the turbo that they will have it tamper proofed

A warranty is only voided if the modification done to the vehicle was directly responsible for damaging the part in need of warranty work. Therefore, because I have a turbo, if my bumper mysteriously falls off they still have to repair it. If I blow my engine thats another story.

when you say "when they are due to be coming in" I assume you mean the mazdaspeed parts. MY dealer expects those to roll out around janurary once the MSPs have rolled out and any bugs have been fixed etc....

Do you guys know anything about cars? There is no headder on a turbo car. It's called a turbo manifold. There are no parts out for the MazdaSpeed yet and there wont be any for at least 6 months. Your best bet for a really good power mod is to get a custom 3" exhaust made from the down pipe back.

I just wish people would learn a little bit about what they are talking about before they go spouting off stupid misinfo that they obviously know nothing about. It would have taken him about 10 minutes of searching around the web to realize how a turbo system works, instead, he just posts crap like, get a headder and you'll really get some power from your new MazdaSpeed Pro. HELLO, get a headder and you'll have to take off the turbo to install it. If he did any searching on this site he would know that the MP3 was out for almost 8 months before any company made anything for it.

go the standard Intake exhaust (Turbo back) combo! Thats a great place to start. That should free up a lot of horse power.

Yep, the intake won't really free up any power, at least not enough to mention. But the turbo back 3" exhaust will probably give you around 15 to 20hp at the wheels. The intake might give you 2 to 3hp. But guess what, I saw the MazdaSpeed this weekend and there are even some tamper proof clamps on the intake side of the turbo. So no CAI for you guys unless you don't want your warranty. I know,....that sucks!

Any idea how loud the MS Protege would be with no muffler? In most states a turbocharger is considered a valid "muffling device" so if the exhaust isn't incredibly loud without a muffler, you could run it wide open. Maybe it would just need a small insert to bring the noise level down a bit, but the turbo will definitely quiet it down a lot.

A turbo does quiet down the exhaust signifigantly, but it's still kinda loud. If you could stand the noise, I'd say go for it. But for me it would still be kinda loud. But any muffler that sounds loud and obnoxious on any other civic will sound very good out a turbo car.

I've played my share of Gran Turismo I know a true "header" can only be installed on Non-Turbo cars. I was just trying to give an example of possible parts... didn't mean to specifically search for any "headers" comming out for the MSP, because obviously they're not... Sorry to cause a little confusion/anarchy.

Yes, but don't think that having a 3" custom turbo-back exhaust put on is as easy or cheap as a cat-back. Plus you have to remove (illegal) or replace (expensive) the cats. Either way if you have warranty issues with the turbo they will probably blame your mods.

Yes, you will probably get 15HP and better/faster turbo response. You would also have an excellent setup to crank up the boost pressure from there. Of course, if the rumors are to be believed, you won't get far past 10-12PSI before your engine starts breaking things.

Actually, if you are resourceful, it really isn't that expensive. If you go to a muffler shop and say "build me a 3" exhaust from the turbo back", you will get raped. If you get under your car. decide what bends you need and how many, then go to JCWhittney.com and order the mandrel bends yourself, take them to a shop, and say, "here is all the tubing you need, build me a 3" exhaust, it will be about as much as any $500 cat back. Probably less. As for the cat converters, you can get high flow ones for $120 to $200. You just have to be a good shopper.

Anyway, Random Technology (http://www.randomtechnology.com/) is probably the best company for high-tech high-flow cats. CarSound (http://www.car-sound.com/01home.htm) is another manufacturer I've heard good things about. Both a catalytic converter specialists. Here's a nice flow test (http://www.ls1camaro.net/catalytic_converter_flow_test.htm) showing Random and CarSound about even. Here's some dyno info (http://www.warpspeedperformance.com/dyno.htm) saying the CarSound cat is just about as good as the Random at $125 less.

Pretty much any high flow cat is fine. Just dont get the ones that have a straight through design, they really don't work at all. Bit if you are not subjected to a sniffer test, go with the one that has the straight through design.

Yep, I saw them at the Texas State Fair. They look pretty good. I also like the calipers that are powdercoated already. Very nice attention to detail.
