Does anyone know any easy way of taking out the storage compartment under our headunit..i want to move the headunit down to make room for an in-dash tv..i did a search on this and wasnt very lucky...also if anyone is looking to sell a 7" in-dash tv let me know.
I couldn't really figure out how to take min eout either...I notiecd you said you want to move your HU down..I will assume the TV unit you bought is just a motoroized monitor and not a reciever also...What did you buy? How much did you get it for? I wanted to buy one of these, but the ones I saw had like radio and cd in them too, which I dont want since I just bought a new HU

hey MP3-TV
It just better to have it installed by a hook up shop. It's to hard to do it. I cost me about $120 to have it installed. and plus you have to also remeber you must have a DVD player or PS2 to play DVD's and to power the DVD or PS2 you must have a inverter to change DC to AC. That to makes it's hard. so play the money and have it installed.
hey KzA
I say you get the KVT M700. it works great with you head unit that you have in your car stock. This is what i have in my MP3 and it's been great and i love it. so the link to the TV is below.

I hope this helps. If any one has more questions feel free to PM me. later

whats the deal with watching TV in the car....like not DVD/PS2 or anything, but TV......are there LCD screen that have TV tuners built in? are htey expensive? what about antennas for watching TV in cars nowadays? im sure technology must have come up with something better than that "wing" tv antenna all the limos had on the backs in the 80s

yeah they have them built in BUT they are a LOT of money. BUT you can buy the KVT-M700 which is just a motorized TV and go and but the optional TV tunner. The tunner is the size of the TV brain and gets mounted under your seat or in the trunk. The antenna is a very small thing. There are Two of them and get mounted on either side of you front windshield. But don't worry they are the size of a small wire. and they run along each side and can't not be seen.
hope that helps

screens with tv tuners arent that bad..it only gets expensive when you have the built in CD and DVD players...also Tv tuners just flat out suck..at least in my area...i guess it all depends on the television stations signals..but you have to be stationary to even try to watch a LOCAL tv channel
Saided, I have a ps2 installed and in inverter and all that..and I havent bought an in-dash yet, i have a couple of ideas on what i want, but that Kenwood is what i really wanted at first, but i cant see paying over 1000 for just a tv, even if it is touchscreen, when I can get a tv with tuner which is a 7" widescreen for 550.

Yeah, If anyone knows and info on taking the HU and the pocket out let us know - I plan to do the same and I was unsure if there was some special type of din tool to take it out or not.
mp3-tv, what was the total cost for those monitors (in headrest) the install and the dc converter, and was the yellow trim a custom paint job? thanks!

the tv's installed were about 320 for BOTH...had a buddy do them though..and the tvs were about 140 apiece..so it was 20 bucks for the adhesive i needed..as for the yellow trim around the tv..all i did was cover them in vinyl...got another buddy who does that..just used a scrap piece..didnt cost me nothing
as for the headunit..my buddy just use the same din key as a ford has..slipped right out..no prob..any local stero shop should be abe to get it out no prob.

they are farenheit...5.6" headrest tvs..i got them from a Dragon distributing catalog..but i got everything at cost...my frind owns a performance shop so i get his prices...as for splitting the signal just use on of these..(see attached pic)
i just ran the video from my PS2 to this little splitter..then to each tv..cost about $1.00..if that
as for the pic..you kinda have to be head on..but most monitors are like that..but the picture is GREAT..i couldnt be happier for the price.

I appreciate it.. i hate the aftermarket plate that they make for the protege with the cd holder in it.. lame..

First, check out my recent thread on removing the head unit:
http://forum.protegemp3.com/vbb225/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8586
From messing with it this weekend, it looks like the storage compartment is held in by some screws underneath the center console face. The center console face "snaps" off (carefully pry it off with a small screwdriver around the edges) but the trick is unhooking the connectors for the hazards and climate control since it's hard to get your hand back there (I decided not to go that route and snapped it back on).
Here's also a page for better illustrations on removing it from a P5:

So have you removed your HU since your last post?
Any diffrent or new info?
Is this the removal tools you were talking about?
To remove the pocket you have to snap off the silver bezzle. The bezzle won't come off more then about an inch becuse the A/C cables are perminently attached, well not realy But I wouldn't advise F-ing with them unless you know what your doing. Then undo the 2 screws securing a metal bar between the radio and pocket. The. pocket itself is not held in by any boltsw or screw just a realy good snap fitting in the back. You have to pull like hell. The best thing ti do is remoe the radio first so its weight isn't on the pocket. If its the 919 you'll need the specialy sized bolts to get it out. Once agian you have to pull like hell.

It has two lil clips on the sides. it just pops out but be careful not to scratch your dash use a cloth and you should be able to pop it out with a thin flathead screwdriver.

My deck got jacked and when they where ripping my deck out they popped the lil compartment out. Granted this was about 1 year ago but I can swear it was just some clips on the side.

are you guys talking about the silver trim? that all pops out? will that effect the carbon fiber trim?
I'm going to be a pain in the A$$ and ask if someone can either explain it to me or show a pic.....
I just received my new 7" in-dash and I'm trying to be brave and install it my self - I just dont want to run into any problems......As it is I feel as if I wont be able to get the HU out - anyway, all help is much appreciated - thanks guys!(thumb)

Sorry bro, I'm stuck at work but I did custom car stereo installs for about 2 years. I'll see if I can't get some pics to you after I get some sleep been up about 38 hours now.
gjmoreo, you have a P5 right?
You'll need the tools Sir nuke put up awile ago.
http://www.protegemp3.com/vbb225/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8338
Well not need, but they may help.
The silver trim isn't the subject, the pocket that came with the MP3 edition protege is. The silver trim is just pop clips but it can't be totaly removed easily. It only comes off about an inch before the A/C cords keep it on. But it comes far enough out to put in another deck and dash kit. You may not even need to pull it off at all, I haven't been able to put a radio in a regualr protege yet.

no - I have a MP3 - i wanted to lower the HU and put my in-dash on top - Did you think I had a Mp5 this whole time - You have been giving me your advice for a while now - LOL
I guess it does not make a big diffrence.....so the silver trim comes right off and then I can access the pocket from there?
Sorry, I forgot. I'm on 2 hours sleep and 5 cups of coffee.
Is it bad that everything looks orange?:wtf:
The silver peice snaps loose but not off.
It comes of enough to use a screw driver to take out a metal bar that is between the pocket and radio. #2 phillips on each side. This metal is what makes the radio opening into a din for the radio and one for the pocket.
Take the radio out first. You need the screw to do it. I can't remember there size. Do a search for it, I believe linuxracer posted the size. I will try to find it and put that in my sticky info thread.
Once the long thin removal screws are in you just have to pull like hell.
You may need to drop the glove box and get a hand behind the radio to free up the monsterous wiring harness adapter mazda used. I buy another one from scosche or metra also.
Once out you can take out the screws on the metal bar, remove the bar and then the cage.
then just get a good hold on the pocket and pull real hard.

sweet - thanks! I'll try it when I get home -
Btw - why should I buy another harness? Just to give myself some extra room?
For more room and becuase the stock one is huge. Half solder board half harness.
