Mazda5

An Insightful New Dimension of Zoom-Zoom Pleasure

EDITORS NOTE: The following is a general global summary of Mazda5 product
information. Equipment configurations may differ from those of the final
products, and availability will vary slightly from region to region. Check
with your local Mazda media communication team for specific, market correct
details.

The new communicative and dynamic space wagon that masterfully combines
cabin comfort, outstanding functionality and true driv ing pleasure with a
clean and stylish design.

Mazda Motor Corporation brings new depth to its Zoom-Zoom brand message
with the world debut of the Mazda5 at the 2004 Paris Motor Show. Designed
from the inside out for maximum comfort, convenience and enjoyment as the
embodiment of its innovative 6 + One packaging concept, the ambience throughout the cabin evokes
conversation and communication among occupants. The Mazda5 also charms with
its sophisticated, yet subtly stated body design that is pleasing to the
eye, and its dynamic driving

performance that is a pleasure to drive as part of one's daily lifestyle.

Aiming to establish a new standard in its segment

The space wagon segment is an important and growing segment in many markets
around the world. Stephen Odell, Mazda's senior managing executive officer
in charge of Global Sales, Marketing and Customer Service had the following
to say.
"In Europe, this segment has exploded in the past five years, growing in
some estimations by more than 200 percent in the five largest markets. We
think this is one segment where Mazda can definitely inject a little
Zoom-Zoom."

Mazda debuted the MX-Flexa as a six-seat space wagon concept at the Geneva
International Motor Show earlier this year. Originally built to demonstrate
one possible direction for a future Mazda vehicle instilled with Zoom-Zoom,
the MX-Flexa was so well received that it spurred the momentum to further
develop the concept and ready the Mazda5 for release as a production
vehicle.

The Mazda5 will certainly inject a dose of Zoom-Zoom into the segment. The
development goal of combining maximum comfort and versatile practicality
with driving enjoyment and responsive handling is explained by Kenichi
Fukunaga, Mazda5 Program Manager.

"We conceptualized the Mazda5 as a communicative and dynamic space wagon.
The communicative part of the product concept relates to the interface
between the vehicle and users, and conveys the notion that the Mazda5 is
rich in user-friendly

practicality. It also conveys the notion that the Mazda5 enables passengers
to interact with each other in comfort. And it conveys the promise of
driveability that makes for natural-feeling interaction between the Mazda5
and the driver.

Overall, it reflects the personality of a vehicle that, compared with other
models released since Mazda adopted the Zoom-Zoom brand strategy, is more
clearly focused on utility and passenger communication.

The dynamic part of the product concept relates to high running, turning,
and stopping potential and to innovative styling that was achieved without
compromises in packaging efficiency. Its important to note that the
Mazda5s performance characteristics are aimed mainly at balancing the need
for brisk acceleration with handling that feels natural and feels
reassuring to the driver and passengers. Mazda vehicles are developed to
deliver easy, enjoyable driving, good manoeuvrability and overall comfort
through excellent body control and damping, not the kind of performance
that's measured only in terms of all-out, raw speed.

Finally, the space wagon part of the product concept conveys the notion
that all of these benefits are delivered in a roomy, space-efficient form."

Key to realising the communicative part is the introduction of a new 6 +
One packaging concept that aims to deliver maximum comfort for six
occupants, plus an extra dimension of versatility and functionality.
Included in this concept is the space established in the centre of the
cabin that promotes communication, even when the exchange is between the
front and third row seats.

The focus on delivering this comfort and convenience is why development
proceeded from the inside out.

Stylish and Clean from the inside out

The Mazda5 design team's aim was to realise a fresh new taste in a design
that is familiar and easy to grow fond of, but that continues to offer a
fresh and well-balanced driving experience, even in constant daily use. The
belief is that a vehicle built to satisfy all the daily needs of family use
must deliver such a balance, and must appeal to a wide variety of
customers. Another priority was to create a pleasing new utility design
that broadens the appeal of Mazda's Zoom-Zoom brand strategy of stylish,
insightful and spirited dynamic performance by taking it deeper into the
realm of insightful engineering with a stylish and clean appeal.

Stylish and clean describes the proportions and balance that faithfully
inherit the benefits of Mazda's brand DNA while achieving a fresh
expression of subtle, sophisticated detailing in a design
that places priority on delivering smart functionality. The design
intentionally avoids flaunting or making an emphatic presentation, instead
aiming to create a harmonious sense of presence that pleases in a manner
that simply feels right and fits the customer's lifestyle. The Mazda5 will
be available in two distinct exterior design appearances that aim at
addressing the product's global nature and the diverse needs of users in
the respective markets where the product will be offered.

Exterior

Particular attention was given to the flowing wedge shape, lean and sinewy
solidness, and compact appearance that embody the
stylish and clean concept.

The sweeping wedge shape of the low front nose section and stylish, flowing
silhouette reveals the Mazda5's dynamic spirit. It is supported by a strong
character line along the side of the
body that runs from nose to tail and merges with the inconspicuous finish
of the sliding door's centre rail to accentuate the body's wedge-shaped
profile.

The side of the Mazda5's body tucks in as much as possible at the rear for
a solid and well-toned look and the roofline also slopes downward as it
reaches the rear to complete the dynamic image, while creating a compact
look and a clean line that defies the roomy cabin space inside.

One of the available appearances packages reduces the apparent volume of
the lower body and adds chrome-like accents to the front grille and
headlamps for a smart look that emphasizes
comfort and pleasing performance. In contrast, the second package
incorporates side skirts and other elements that make the centre
of gravity appear lower, while the lamps are finished in a dark colour that
adds an expression of a nimble, more aggressive spirit.

Interior

The entire design team approached the new 6 + One packaging concept by
working relentlessly to deliver the highest possible

quality and greatest comfort and ease of use for the driver and all
occupants. The materials, colours, and design throughout the
interior were given utmost attention so Mazda could deliver a new compact
space wagon that customers will find pleasant to drive day in and day out,
around town and on outings with family and friends.

The sedan-like design of the instrument panel and sweeping line of its
upper section provide a natural feeling and clear field of view that even
former sedan drivers will find immediately familiar and comfortable. The
centre of the dashboard is raised to position the controls concentrated on
the centre panel where the driver can easily reach them, as well as to
improve their visibility and operation.

Interior detailing covers the finest points to enhance the finish and sense
of quality. For example, the simple and clean three- meter instrument
cluster has the large speedometer with white back-plate in the centre, and
is designed for maximum visibility right down to details in relationship to
the steering wheel's position.

Mazda5 will offer global customers a choice of two interior trim packages.
One features a light beige keynote colour that creates a warm and relaxing
atmosphere as well as look of quality throughout the cabin, with an aim of
pleasing those who seek a smart looking interior the whole family will
enjoy day after day.
The other combines a black keynote colour with cool silver accents on the
centre panel and elsewhere to create a balance that will appeal to those
who appreciate a sleeker, more sophisticated or technical interior
ambience.

Packaging and Craftsmanship

The new 6 + One packaging concept delivers maximum comfort for six
occupants, plus an additional dimension of utility through intelligent
design that realizes easy access, walk-through convenience, ample seating
arrangements, handy storage space
and practical yet visually pleasing appointments. Core to the whole concept
is the open space created in the cabin's centre that encourages and
facilitates free and open interaction between all who ride in the Mazda5.

With an overall length of 4,505 mm (177 inches), width of 1,755 mm (69.1
inches), height of 1,615 mm (63.6 inches) and a wheelbase of 2,750 mm (108
inches), the Mazda5 manages to deliver the roomy comfort of a space wagon,
while
limiting overall size. For reference, the length exceeds the compact Mazda3
five door model by just 85 mm (3.35 inches), the height by 150 mm (5.91
inches); while the width is the same on both cars. Despite the long
wheelbase, the Mazda5
features an excellent minimum turning radius of just 5.3 meters, making it
remarkably easy for any driver to manoeuvre in tight situations.

Mazda5's large sliding doors on both sides are a first in this class. The
doors open smoothly and easily, and do not swing out too far, making them
easy to operate in parking spaces and other tight locations. Features that
make access to all seats very easy, even when loaded down with shopping
bags, infants, or in other
daily-life situations, include the wide sliding doors, the low and wide
side steps, and one-touch third row walk-in mechanism.

Particular effort went to ensuring maximum headroom and legroom while
providing a comfortably tall hip point for friends or family who sit in the
third row seats. This included overcoming a number of challenges such as
developing a low-profile fuel tank to realise
a low, flat cabin floor without sacrificing fuel tank integrity or capacity
for extended touring, as well as angling the rear roof pillar back toward
the liftgate to add extra head clearance while improving the vehicle´s
aerodynamic characteristics at the same time.

The second and third row seats can be easily arranged in a number of
flexible patterns to allow maximum efficiency in the use of space. In
addition to their long slide adjustment and reclining functions, the second
row seats each feature a handy double-fold mechanism. Design details to
achieve maximum comfort include a flat floor design that ensures maximum
legroom in both the second and third row seats. Folding down the second and
third row seatbacks creates an expansive luggage area with a virtually flat
floor.

In markets where offered, a karakuri seventh seat folds out from beneath
the cushion of the left-hand second row seat to provide seating for a
seventh passenger between the second row seats when the need arises.
Alternately, a karakuri utility box stowed beneath the cushion of the
right-hand seat in the second row can be folded out to occupy the same
space when added utility is the priority.

Accessibility

To ensure usability and ease of accessibility, painstaking research was
conducted that included attaching sensors to test subjects and running
simulations of the human body's actual movement when opening/closing the
door. This helped produce easy-to-operate sliding doors on both sides that
open 700 mm, wide enough to allow a parent to enter the vehicle while
carrying an infant. The walk-through cabin design and one-touch entry to
the third row further add to the ease of access.

Another product of extensive testing, the new plastic liftgate with
two-step stop mechanism, maximizes operational ease for users of all
heights and builds.

Convenient accessories

Furthering ease of use, the Mazda5 has an available advanced keyless
system, a first for Mazda outside of Japan. The system employs a
card-shaped device that one simply carries in a pocket or purse. When the
holder comes within close proximity of the car, the card-shaped transmitter
automatically communicates with
Mazda5's onboard system to allow the doors or liftgate to be locked or
unlocked, and the engine started or stopped without inserting
a key into a door or ignition keyhole. The system makes it convenient to
enter the car when one's hands are encumbered with shopping bags, or
children.

The development team also developed smart new audio and entertainment
systems with functionality and versatility that heightens the pleasure of
riding in the Mazda5.

In markets where available, a newly developed hard disk drive
(HDD) based audio system stores up to 3,000 of the user's favourite songs,
the equivalent of 300 to 500 CDs. The system supports fast and easy
searching for individual tracks by title, artist name,
or genre for instant access to the music that suits the moment.

An available rear entertainment system includes a seven-inch LCD display
and DVD player mounted on the ceiling that allows passengers in the second
and third row seats to enjoy watching
DVD movies, or to play CDs. Additionally, an auxiliary jack mounted in the
third row seat trim makes it possible to connect a game machine, or a video
camera for playback. A wireless remote
control makes it easy for passengers in any of the second or third row
seats to control the system and select a different song, movie chapter,
change volume, etc.

Craftsmanship

Attention to detail can be readily seen in the quality of the seat, floor,
and body designs and is a testament to the development team's eagerness to
have users experience the company's commitment to quality and finish the
instant a door on the Mazda5 is opened.

The Mazda5's fit and finish speaks of Mazda's determination to deliver high
quality throughout, right down to the small clearance tolerances for panel
matching. Of particular note is the unobtrusively smooth surface of the
body colour B-pillar between the front and sliding doors. Similarly, the
ridge lines and tracks for the sliding doors create a straight, clean
finish.

Additionally, clinical analysis of muscle movement when operating the gear
shift lever led to the development of a centre panel design that positions
the knob at an optimum angle that makes operation possible without bending
one's wrist.

Driving Dynamics improving the ownership experience

While the achievement of interior comfort and versatility were priorities
in Mazda5 development, even a vehicle that is ready to redefine the space
wagon segment must deliver the signature Mazda driving dynamics of
responsiveness, neutral handling and linear, controllable braking if it is
to embody the full spirit of Zoom-Zoom.

Powertrain

Ensuring the responsive ride that drivers expect of a new- generation Mazda
are the 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre MZR series petrol engines that have earned
a reputation in the Mazda6 for delivering linear, lively and torquey power
combined with low fuel consumption and emissions. These four-cylinder,
16-valve DOHC engines have been tuned to deliver optimum performance and
matched with a smooth action five-speed manual transmission.
A four-speed automatic is also available in select markets.

Also available and specifically fine tuned for the European market is a
MZR-CD 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine with common-rail injection and
a new six-speed manual transmission matched to support the engine's power
output. Two versions standard power and high power will be offered. The
engine was developed with the goal of delivering solid output, outstanding
fuel economy, and a

quiet ride with low NVH (noise, vibration and harshness). A new catalytic
diesel particulate filter contributes to an overall reduction in NOx and
particulate matter emissions, virtually eliminating soot, while the
engine's lower fuel consumption reduces CO2 emissions. Another feature of
the diesel engine is its quiet idling and quiet ride.

Chassis

Building on the proven architecture of the Mazda3 that has earned high
acclaim worldwide, the suspension of the Mazda5 is optimally

tuned to produce a ride that occupants in all seats will find comfortable
and particularly well balanced and damped. MacPherson struts in the front
and a multi-link suspension in the rear help suppress the roll observed in
some of this segment´s vehicles due to the relatively tall body height and
large shift in load.

Mazda5 is equipped with Mazda's electronic hydraulic power assist steering
system (EHPAS). Ventilated disc brakes in the front and solid discs in the
rear ensure positive braking response along with unrivalled stability and
control. This high level of basic brake performance is representative of
Mazda's brand DNA, and realizes the outstanding stability required to make
the new Mada5 perform to its potential.

Rigid body

Every detail of the Mazda5 body was optimized to realise the rigidity
needed for a comfortable ride with minimal NVH, as well as providing solid
footing on the road at all times, despite the wide openings for the sliding
side doors and large liftgate in the rear.

Active and Passive Safety

Mazda's own highly rigid, collision-safe Mazda Advanced Impact Distribution
and Absorption System body is greatly evolved to match the characteristics
of the Mazda5's body design.
The outstanding level of crash safety achieved was the product of strenuous
testing under conditions more severe than the regulations and standards of
each market, with the goal of

achieving not only excellent scores in standardized tests such as NCAP or
Euro NCAP, but also an ability to ultimately protect passengers in a
variety of real-world accidents.

The airbag supported supplemental restraint systems provide high levels of
protection for all occupants, from the front and side airbags for the
driver and front seat passenger, to a new available airbag curtain large
enough to protect those sitting in all three rows of seats.

On the active, Zoom-Zoom side of safety, the Mazda5's advanced safety
systems include a four-wheel anti-lock braking system
(4W-ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) system, and Mazda's
own dynamic stability control (DSC) system. Mechanical brake assistance
boosts the brake pedal force applied by the driver in the event of an
emergency to ensure a shorter stopping distance.

The driver is also well positioned to assure clear visibility by minimizing
blind spots and maximizing the view through the side windows, making
pedestrians, small children and the like easier to spot.

Zoom-Zoom in the Space Wagon Segment

The Mazda5 is about to redefine its segment with unprecedented comfort,
functionality, cabin utility and driving
pleasure. The overall package is so compelling that users will ask
themselves why they would drive a space wagon unless it offered the added
practicality and Zoom-Zoom fun from Mazda.

sorry for being slow and all...is this replacing the MPV Or is this competing with the fugly Xb?
neither, MPV will continue as a full size minivan, the Mazda5 is Mazda's attempt at opening a new segment in the North American market. Curiously, a car like this is called a 'Multi-Purpose Vehicle' (not to be confused with the current MPV minivan, of course) in Europe and Asia, and is very popular due to its combination of compact size, manuverability, and passenger/cargo space.

basically Mazda is trying to pull another Protege5 out of their hat. Remember how before Protege5s start showing up in the showrooms, there weren't that many compact 5 door hatchbacks around?

I applaud Mazda for trying another unique and risk move to eneter a new market..

I dunno if thing will actually sell well, or tank. It's like a tall P5/MZ3, but small at teh same time...

Eitherway, it's got more power and better looks than the Scions... Of course, it costs a bit more too..

from the size, it almost seems to compete with the sub forester, except no AWD or turbo option.

What if they used that older suv bodystyle looking mpv and made a pacifica competetion (Roll Over Safe SUV/VAN Thingy) so it is safe to drive agressively as a car but still hae the storage and functions of a soccer mom suv. wasn't an older version AWD? I beleve a member brought one to our last MSCW meet? Cause ther is also an 4x4 grand caravan out there as well.

my bet is that this car was developed on a similar or same platform as the new ford freestar (freestyle? i cant remember) since they are the same size/segment. Think of it as competition for like a subaru forester but with sliding doors.

That's a great question. Officially, 6 + One is "packaging concept". In other words, it's a fancy marketing name that sounds better than the words 6-seater. The only real substance to 6 + One is that the 2nd row seats can be configured or folded or whatever in many different ways. The press release at the beginning of this thread goes over some of the things they can do. But honestly, all minivans now have 2nd row that is quite flexible (though different minivans have different features). Mazda just gave it a cool name in 6 + One, so in that sense, yes, N. America will have 6 + One.

Mazda Canada's website has a contact number to reach them. However, in regards to future products, even if that CSR knew more, they wouldn't tell you. This also applies to MazdaUSA.

You seem quite interested in this vehicle, are you looking to purchase one next year? I personally think this vehicle will fit a very nice niche in Canada.

And what do you mean by you have info from Mazda corporate but have no contact with Mazda Canada, where did you get the corporate info?

Here's the Euro website for the Mazda5:

http://www.theallnewmazda5.com/English/index.asp

Job#1 for the Mazda5 began in November and both euro-spec and JDM-spec are now in production (N. American-spec has not yet begun). I also made a mistake earlier when I called 6+One the 6-seater "packaging concept". 6+One is indeed the marketing name for the 7-seater version of the Mazda5, and as mentioned before all N. American-spec Mazda5 will come in 6-seater spec only.

The marketing name for the flexible packaging concept is referred to as Karakuri seating and storage. Karakuri, of course, was also the marketing name used to describe the Mazda6 automatic split-folding seatback + moving of rear seat cushion forward system. Mazda North American Operations didn't use the 'Karakuri' marketing name much for the N. American-spec Mazda6 so the same may or may not happen with the Mazda5 (but again, it is just a marketing thing).

So wongpres, I'm a little confused. The Canadian website acknowleges the existence of the Mazda5, while the American site makes no mention of it. Does this mean there are no definite plans to bring it to the market here? Assuming it is shown at the North American International Auto Show, will public reaction to it determine its destiny?

It's coming to the USA (confirmed), and as you say it'll make its N. American-debut at NAIAS (precisely at 4:30 on Jan 10). Like with the Mazdaspeed6, I'll post the press release when it's released.

Here's the NAIAS US-spec Mazda5 press release. It's not very exciting so I'm putting it on this thread as opposed to making a new one. In fact, MazdaUSA is being very low-key about the Mazda5, it's as if they've already resigned to the fact it won't be too successful in the US (which honestly is true). So while MazdaUSA is primarily focussing on Mazdaspeed6, Mazda Canada is more focussing on Mazda5 (all of which is very appropriate).

MAZDA LAUNCHES ALL-NEW TYPE OF VEHICLE FOR U.S. MARKET WITH DEBUT OF MAZDA5 MULTI-ACTIVITY VEHICLE
Mazda’s all-new MAZDA5
- Innovative Design of MAZDA5 Provides Refined Comfort and Functionality -

DETROIT - Mazda's all-new MAZDA5 multi-activity vehicle was unveiled for the first time in North America today at the North American International Auto Show. The MAZDA5, a six-passenger multi-activity vehicle that drives like a sports car but packs people and equipment like a large SUV, demonstrates Mazda's desire to bring stylish, insightful and spirited vehicles to every segment in which the company competes.

The MAZDA5 blends style and functionality with Mazda's signature Zoom-Zoom driving experience. Designed from the inside out for maximum comfort, convenience and functionality, the MAZDA5 also is an amazingly versatile vehicle with a fun-to-drive quotient to match.

Inside, the vehicle's unique and flexible seating arrangement yields a space that encourages reconfiguring for occupant seating and cargo versatility, while the flowing wedge-shaped body, with its solid proportions, defines the vehicle as unmistakably Mazda.

"The MAZDA5 provides a transportation solution for young, professional families and fits perfectly with their active lifestyles," said Weldon Munsey, MAZDA5 vehicle line manager for Mazda North American Operations (MNAO). "Mazda is leading the emergence of this new multi-activity vehicle segment, and the MAZDA5 is intended to play the role of taxi, work vehicle, limousine, shopping cart and fun-to-drive car."

Mazda's commitment to innovative design has yielded an adaptable interior that is both comfortable and spacious. The MAZDA5 boasts room for six occupants, plus a space in the center of the cabin that promotes communication, even when the exchange is between the front- and third-row seats. Through its unique approach to interior space, MAZDA5 offers easy ingress and egress, ample seating arrangements, handy storage space and practical yet visually pleasing appointments.

Thanks to tiered "theater-style" seating, all occupants enjoy ample head- and leg-room and third-row passengers will appreciate the comfortably tall hip point, as well as clear sightlines through the front windshield. The MAZDA5's large sliding doors and low floor allow for fluid ingress and egress, and a one-touch walk-in mechanism offers easy access to the third-row seats. Considerable time was spent developing an all-new sliding door mechanism that needs little more than one finger to open or close, eliminating the need for costly, heavy and slow-powered doors. Even the rear hatch mechanism was re-thought, with a double detent that allows it to stop at two different heights allowing easy reach for users of all heights.

To achieve maximum cabin comfort, Mazda engineers had to overcome a number of challenges, including developing a low-profile fuel tank to realize a low, flat cabin floor without sacrificing fuel tank integrity or capacity. Mazda also angled the rear roof pillar back toward the liftgate to add extra head clearance, which simultaneously improved the MAZDA5's aerodynamic characteristics.

To ensure the MAZDA5 delivers the same level of functional excellence for transporting cargo as it does for passengers, the second- and third-row seats easily can be arranged in a number of flexible patterns to allow maximum space efficiency. In addition to their long slide adjustment and reclining functions, the second-row seats each feature a double-fold mechanism. Folding down the second- and third-row seatbacks creates an expansive luggage area with a virtually flat floor.

The MAZDA5 is powered by an all-aluminum 2.3-liter, four-cylinder MZR series engine shared with the popular MAZDA3 subcompact, developing 157-horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. Sequential Valve Timing (S-VT) provides brisk throttle response and plenty of torque both under acceleration and at cruising speeds. Transmission options are a five-speed manual or four-speed Sport AT automatic with manual shift mode.

Also shared with the MAZDA3, a vehicle which has earned acclaim worldwide, is the underbody architecture, including the suspension design and componentry, floor stampings and body and chassis rigidity. To suppress body roll, Mazda engineers chose MacPherson struts in the front and a multi-link suspension in the rear. The high-performance suspension combination limits the natural body-lean effects of the relatively tall height when cornering, yielding predictable, neutral handling. Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) combine with Mazda's own Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system to ensure stability and control under braking, regardless of load or weight distribution. EBD ensures that brake pressure is apportioned properly, and works in concert with ABS to minimize stopping distances. In the event of an emergency, mechanical brake assistance boosts braking force to ensure a shorter stopping distance.

Mazda engineers optimized every detail of the body to deliver the rigidity needed for a comfortable ride and exacting handling - if this vehicle was to carry the Mazda badge, it was critical that it contain the Mazda driving-performance DNA from the outset of development. The MAZDA5 enjoys solid footing on the road at all times, and minimal road noise invades the cabin, despite the wide openings for the sliding side doors and large liftgate in the rear.

Mazda engineers evolved the company's own highly rigid Mazda Advanced Impact-energy Distribution and Absorption System to match the characteristics of the MAZDA5's body design. Accident scenarios were tested at speeds well above global regulations to protect passengers against the unpredictable variety of real-world accidents. This commitment to safety is indicative of Mazda's efforts to protect both driver and passengers through both active and passive measures.

Other passive safety features designed to protect vehicle occupants include an airbag-supported supplemental restraint system, front and side airbags for the driver and front passenger, and airbag curtains large enough to protect all three rows of seats.

Active safety measures include a driving position oriented for safety with minimal blind spots and maximum visibility through the side windows, a Full Auto Wiping System that detects rain and turns the wipers on, an Intelligent Light System that evaluates the surrounding environment and tailors light output for safe night driving and an extremely capable braking system.

Interior styling benefits greatly from Mazda's functional design approach. The center of the dashboard is raised to position the controls within easy reach for the driver and much closer to eye level, allowing the driver to monitor gauges without taking an eye off the road. In addition, clinical analysis of muscle movement when operating the transmission shifter led to the development of a center panel that positions the knob at an optimum angle for operation without bending one's wrist. Even the gauges benefit from a thorough functional examination; the large speedometer dominates the three-gauge instrument cluster and is easily viewable in all light conditions, thanks to its white back-plate and clear lettering.

The exterior of the MAZDA5 benefits from the same dedication to form and function as the interior. The wedge shape and sleek proportions yield a clean, stylish appearance. A strong character line along the side of the body runs from nose to tail, where it merges with the subtle finish of the sliding door's center rail. The strong hood line and raked windshield provide a sleek, motion-inspired appearance. To enhance the MAZDA5's solid proportions, short front and rear overhangs are complemented by sophisticated 17-inch alloy wheels. The overall toned look of the MAZDA5 creates a sense of athletic tension while hinting at the Zoom-Zoom driving experience within.

The MAZDA5 multi-activity vehicle will be available in either Sport or Touring trim levels. The Sport trim level includes an AM/FM/CD stereo, power windows and locks as well as cruise control. Touring trim includes all of the amenities of the Sport level and adds climate control, front fog lamps, attractive rear spoiler, sleek side skirts, an in-dash six-disc AM/FM/CD changer and a power moonroof. Striking 17-inch alloy rims and a comprehensive airbag safety system are standard on both models.

Not sure yet. I have seen a US-spec Mazda5 with NAV (it was pre-production though), but it didn't have the Mazda3-like HID manual-levelling dial (or it could be automatic headlight levelling on the Mazda5). So for now I would say 50-50 on HID, I'll post once I get definitive info.

Thanks for answering my question WongPres. I believe that HID headlights is a feature that is very crucial for my buying decision of the Mazda5.

First, I would like to present myself, or explain why that feature is a very important feature for me and Mazda as well.

I am also a member of VwVortex site. Hence, I have owned some VW cars: 2 Golf precisely ( Golf III and Golf IV). Since the latent delivery of VW's products and very poor reliability as well, I've been monitoring other competitors for a better hatchback. The Mazda3 has almost come to perfection with all the basic features required for this day and age (e.g. HID, and tire pressure monitoring system). But as I get older, my family grows in size. Hence, the Mazda3, although is a very good product (i.e. car), doesn't fit my need for a family car. Hence, I need an alternative to the Mazda3 with a little more seat, plus one is fine, about the same length for parking purpose in the city and mpg, little more room inside, yet with the same features (i.e. HID with tire pressure monitoring system), the very minimal to ask I believe. Of course, the Mazda5 will also be required to have some family feature as well (e.g. powered side doors, and etc...).

Why wouldn't a family size car have HID anyway? Better visibility of the road means better safety in driving. With a car transporting more people inside (i.e. Mazda5), the car deserves as much, if not more, safety as a car that transport less passengers (i.e. Mazda3). Since Mazda3 has HID feature available, there's no reason why the Mazda5, which shares the same platform, cannot have it as well.

As Mazda believes that all his cars should have 4 wheel disc brakes, HID should also be an optional feature for all its lineups. It's good to be able to move, and to stop at the driver's will, but vision is also an important factor, especially at night.
