Hey there,

A 1996 mazda protege is available in two trims 1.8L and 1.5L. The 1.5L is 98% of all mazda proteges built in the year 1996. Now, there are 2 ways to find out what your engine is:
1. Location of your engine number
a. if your engine number is at the back of the engine then it is a 1.5L
b. if your engine number is at the front of the engine then it is a 1.8L
2. your VIN number
a. Go online to Mazda's official website and join there as a car owner. It will ask you for the VIN number when you register. Enter your VIN and complete the registration. Then go to your home page and it will show you your trim, a picture of your car and engine size.
b. Call Mazda and they will be able to tell you from your VIN number
