Hi all,
Thanks to a lot of help from folks on this board, I changed my oil, rotated my wheels and installed my TWM performance short shifter this weekend. Yippee! Unfortunately my stock shift knob doesn't fit the short shifter, even though it was advertised as doing so. I have a feeling it was tested on a 2002 P5 and not a 2002.5 P5 (like mine). I know Mazda changed their P5 shift knobs for 2002.5+.
Does anyone know of a stock shift knob that will fit the TWM performance short shifter? Does an MSP shifter knob fit? 2002 P5 knob? I'm looking for something stock-looking, with no set screws. If anyone has a stock knob that will fit this I'll gladly buy it off them.
Thanks for any pointers!
Josh

The stock MSP knob won't work. I just installed my TWM, also, and I had to settle for the non-msp specific shifter. I bought a temporary knob for $9 at AutoZone until I can find a nice heavy threaded shift knob for it. TWM makes nice knobs that will work perfectly, but I don't really like the style. I'm looking for a knob like a Sparco Globe, but threaded.

Spooled> Thanks for the info. I've got calls into TWM and Corksport to see if they know of any that will fit. Corksport has a nice stock-looking knob "recommended for short shifter kit", so maybe that will work. I like the stock look, and I hate set screws, so I'll let you know what I find. I'm hoping a 2002.0 P5 knob will fit...

Great!I'm still searching everywhere for threaded knobs, but I really should figure out what the thread specs are first. If you find something, let me know.

Hi there!
I had a TWM short shift kit in my 2002 P5 and my stock knob fits perfectly. That is the knob with the silver round on top of it, same as older protegé's.

The MP3 shift lever used an M8 x 1.25 thread. All other Mazda shift levers use an M10 x 1.25 thread.

I just got an email from TWM and they said that their shifter for the P5 and regular Protege uses M10 x 1.25 threading. I'm still waiting for a reply back from Greddy as to whether or not their counter-weighted knob is deep enough to swallow the shifter up to the boot (1.75").

I ordered my shift knob from ebay actually. Ordered a 2001 knob and it fit my 2002.5 easily. I like the stock knob look myself so that was a quick fix i think 12bux on ebay including shipping

I have an 02.5 with the TWM, worked flawlessly. do you have the leather comfy knob or the one that is kinda round with chrome on it.

I've got the bulky black leather knob (which I like).
Well, after talking with TWM and Corksport it seems I was probably shipped the wrong short shifter. :( I got the MP3 short shifter, however Corksport no longer has my shipment on file since it was ordered 4 months ago (this was the last thing I installed from the order). Corksport says they have no knobs that will fit the TWM short shifter. Corksport says sometimes stock knobs work, sometimes they don't, they have no way of telling when they send a short shifter out. Suffice it to say I don't buy that and while I love their SS brake lines, I don't think I'll deal with them in the future if I can help it.
I'll talk to TWM tomorrow to see if it's safe to leave my MP3 short shifter in my P5, or if I'm damaging my tranny by doing so. I imagine the only difference is the threading, but who knows.
So since I got shipped the MP3 short shifter, a stock MP3 shift knob should fit it fine. After I talk to TWM I'll decide whether I need to swap-out the short shifter (ARG) or buy an MP3 shift knob. Damnit.
