While the name conjures an enticing image of a BMW M3 fitted with all-wheel drive, this Chevy concept instead offers a first look at a pocket-sized model for European markets. On sale in spring 2005 as replacement for the Matiz city car, this concept reveals the overall styling direction, with minimal overhang and a decided cute factor. A large panoramic roof gives the car an open-air option, for urban dwellers to savor the skylines, or give universal hand signals from. The powertrain is more Isetta than M3; a 1.0L/64-hp I-4 has us glad to be living in America.

GM might fight Smart car with Korea-built minicar concept

PARIS -- General Motors is considering bringing a Korea-built minicar concept, the M3X, to North America as a competitor to DaimlerChrysler AG's Smart cars.

The Smart small-car brand is scheduled to be launched in the United States in 2006. In an interview at the Paris auto show, Nick Reilly, CEO of GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Co., said the M3X might fit into GM's plans for a four-seat minicar.

Although unveiled as a concept, the GM Daewoo-built M3X represents the next generation of the Daewoo Matiz, which is sold in Europe and China. A Chevrolet-branded production version will debut in Europe next spring.

"We've never sold the Matiz in North America," Reilly said, "but I see Smart cars in New York and Los Angeles. I'm going to take back the idea (to Korea) for our use."

GM Daewoo also introduced the S3X SUV concept that will debut in 2006 in Europe and Korea.

Reilly said the seven-seat, three-row vehicle is not coming to North America but is an example of GM's plans for diesel vehicles in Europe. He said the production S3X represents the first application of diesel technology on a Chevy in Europe.
