Well just got word from the dealership...they said and I quote "Your turbo is completely shot, we called Mazda NA and they said to order you a new one under warranty we'll need your car for another 2 days". So I'm driving a fully loaded jeep liberty loaner till monday when the new turbo will hopefully be on....though it took 3 visits to finally convince them it was the turbo(actually had to take in my spare 14b and show them how the turbo failed and what was wrong) I'm happy its being covered by warranty....how many other failed turbo owners do we have and how many were covered under warranty?

Did the oil cook or did your turbo pull something in?

My buddy that works for Mazda said they've had a few MSP's in at his dealership for turbo replacements lately. The problem for me is that I'm nearing 49,000 miles(a few days away). Is there any signs I should look for to maybe catch it before the warranty expires?

coked oil and coolant starvation, i was in there the week before getting both inlet lines replaces for leaks and clogs..... 2k3 you can check the condition of the turbo by find the shaft play...a BB turbo should have zero in and out play and very very little side to side play(you do this by wiggling the turbine when after taking the intake off). Generally turbos usually "wear out" around 70K so thats something to look forward to....but looking at your mods i doubt they'd cover it unless you put the car completely back to stock...to be honest it wouldnt be worth it, even if the turbo is on its way out you might as well get a bigger one with the supporting mods you already have.

Did you have any mods or is your car stock?
I'm curious to see what you got away with mod wise.

Yeah, they've been pretty cool about my mods so far, but I haven't done any major damage yet either. Hopefully if/when my turbo goes, I'll have enough cash to pick up at least a GT28. There certainly seems to be quite a few floating around the forum already too.

hey are you on aim? whats your screen name? I am wondering why you took your car in for service due to the turbo problem..I'm actually wondering if I have the same problem..I have always thought this turbo is not getting enough lube and/or coolant due to the noise it makes..I get a squealing noise undler light load from 4000rpm on up..Sound familliar??

my seals went out. Had mad oil coming out of the turbo and into my piping. Dealer said it was "normal" and to keep driving it. Then they were like by the way your 3 quarts low on oil to. Tried to get them to fix it, even emailed corporate but they wouldnt fix it. I bought a turbonetics BB T3/T4 instead

petey sounds exactly like what mine was doing....sounds kinda like a tea kettle going off from 4K-4900K and a general lack of power...infact mine got so bad that me and david(msp267) went to the track and I couldnt get below a 15.6 at 10psi with intake and CS exhaust....

thank god i am reading this Im not sure but i belive my trubo is shot as well i called the dealership and they told me that what i was telling them sounded like just that. I no longer hear any sucking noise nor the BOV and there is no boost at around 3 1/2k rpm's. the guy i talked to at Freeman mazda told me to bring my car in monday and that he has an expert that could tell weather or not my turbo is in fact fried he also mentioned to me that they have been having a string of these lately. my car only has 29000 miles on it and no mods.I was also getting that squeeling noise at 4k-4 1/2k rpm's but i havent heard that in the past two days even at 5 1/2k-6k rpm's

I had my turbo setup replaced about 4 weeks ago under warranty. I was completely stock (engine-wise) so there wasn't a problem. My turbo wasn't blown, though. It was because the wastegate actuator was blown, and they have to do the whole thing at once.

titanium - I wouldnt worry about it, more than likely they'll replace it under warranty...

hmmm so my loud whistle sound is possibly a messed up turbo? I have always thought that I was just not boosting that much and thats why my car was slow and the whistle was just the turbo spinning. I brought my car in last month to have them see what was wrong and they said it was fine, now you got me worried.

Just to add to the topic;
I had my turbo replaced several months ago because it was leaking oil and there was a small amouth of oil on it's underside suggesting it was probably not getting proper lube (or starving) so they replaced it. At this point I'm past the point of return on modifications but I keep a close eye on oil levels and look for residue everytime I stick my head under the engine bay..which is pretty frequent. BTW my car showed no other symptoms of this problem. Sounded healthy and was only noticed because I had cracked my stock exhaust so I had my head down there.

I just looked at my turbo and noticed that there is alot of oil residue all over it as well as splashed on parts surrounding the turbo

Take it to the dealer now.
They're replacing my turbo right now because of the screech, squeel, whistle, or whatever you want to call it.
I also had a bunch of oil residue on my turbo.

I don't think I like this thread. I do have some minimal oil on the bottom of my turbo; Don't really lose any oil between changes though. My Forge is already really dirty even though I greased it last month. I do hear the turbo spool up real loud, I always just figured it was because the air filter is in the engine bay, not down in the fender.
I took the car to the only MazdaSpeed Dealer in the area when I bought it and they said, "Yeah, we know this car. The whole thing is void of warranty because of the CAI." I said WTF?? Either way, they wouldn't touch it under warranty. I guess this all just answered my question about selling the Tempo as my POS-go-to-work car. :(
Edit: Holy Moly, I just looked at the dates on this thread....
but I still don't like it.

I blew the swing gate on mine. Dealer laughed when i tried to have the warenty work done. I got pissed off and decided to go with an aftermarket setup. Thumper with GT 30/40R.

wait wait.....a turble "whistle" isnt normal?..... you hear a whoosh between 2k rpm and about 5.2k - 6.5k rpm then it whistles like its reached max load.... then I hit the next gear and the process starts over again...
the whistle isnt loud or anything but I thought it was normal?? looks like Ill be underneath my car today.... (ugh its like 104 degrees out)...
so youre saying I too should be worried?

A turbo whistle is normal. Mine has done it from day 1 (8Km -5 miles- on the ODO).

CAI will void warrantee on your turbo???(shocked) Thats pretty crappy because a CAI doesn't do anything other than increase the airflow, which the stock intake system does too. Just not as well. I hate it when the dealer gives you heat about dumb shit like that. If my turbo breaks, im putting the airbox back on, and they can fix it anyway.

Whats going on mang.....ive taken my car to Mazda Of Clear Lake for the past 5 years, ive made friends with techs so i usually dont get any trouble from them. I actually just got a call back from my tech, and he said in fact the turbo was gone.....he said the compressor wheel was rubbing against the housing. He couldnt figure out how it happened cause nothing was loose, but that fugged everything up and caused the turbo to go out. He already replaced it, and will be ready for pick-up in the morning!! Good news for me, i was getting worried that it may take awhile to fix.

from what ive read the whining or squealing sound is from the turbo and that it is normal--though this post makes me worry because my car does this. the a/c thing sounds wrong. it does it with the a/c off doesnt it?
Bakum
08-18-2006, 06:05 PM
If your A/C is on and your boosting, it's really bad for your car, because the a/c is already putting a strain on the engine along with the turbo ramming more air into the engine. It sounds possible that the a/c compressor may have had something to do with it, but not as a direct result of a blown turbo. I'm no tech, so I could be wrong though.
There is a light whine when your turbo spools which IS normal. If you have a CAI or RAI you will be able to hear it more clearly. I hear it all the time and my car is fine. You really have to gauge how severe the sound is to determine whether its borken or not. Hope that info helps out a bit.

ya i ca tell the difference when its my turbo spooling or when its the compressor.. but the compressor doesnt do it all the time but 9 out of 10 time i drive my car its with the windows down and ac off so im not putting much strain on it to put the wheel against the housing?? but is any one sure that this will lead to a turbo low out or any other major fixes????
thanks for all the info so far
