View Full Version : SMIC installed

jersey_emt

CustomMSP and I put on his prototype SMIC on my car tonight.

Install went smooth, only tricky part was getting the fan out of the way.

This IC is thicker, wider, and flows much better than the stock IC.

The difference was immediately noticeable. More power, as well as smoother acceleration. Hesitation is greatly reduced. Can't wait to put it on the dyno (yes, we have to put the stock IC back on to get a baseline. But honestly, it's a 10-15 minute job if you know what you're doing. 20-30 if you don't).

Also, I had no heatsoak during the 45 minute drive home, where I pushed the car hard the entire way. In fact, I went on a rampage, beating a stock S2000 from 0-65, a stock 350z roadster from 35-70, and the usual raping of random ricers.

hmmm odd...why would hesitation be reduced? wouldnt a smic make the a/f a bit richer?

SMIC is probally the best mod for our cars...perfect with minimal pressure drop.

ECU will adjust the A/F ratio to be where it's supposed to be (which isn't where it's 'supposed' to be of course). Colder air is denser, if anything it would run slightly leaner.

Newb question...whats heatsoak?

jersey_emt
09-13-2004, 10:31 PM
Heatsoak is when the tiny stock IC gets 'soaked with heat' and loses efficiency. The hot air from the turbo is too much for the itty-bitty IC, and it can't cool effectively. This is why the car runs great when you first warm it up, but beat on it for a little bit and it seems to slow down.

Anyways the drive home was good. It wasn't hot, but it was much warmer than it was last night @ 10pm. Still barely any heatsoak noticeable, as opposed to the stock IC which began slowing the car down after 10-15 minutes of medium - hard driving.

Good stuff:
Boost has increased to just under 9psi (from 8psi).
Acceleration is smoother.
No heatsoak
Noticeable gain on the butt-dyno.

No bad stuff noticed as of yet.

Are you referring to wrapping stock pipes as well, or does this theory only really apply to hardpipes? Interested in pics of the smic too, since it sounds like the results were awesome...

Rich24km

you can wrap both. Man i noticed with my hardpipes sometimes they're cool to the touch after a long drive, and sometimes they'll burn you. Even the CAI will get hot sometimes, but others its not. I drive the same most the time. I'm going to wrap mine and save for this IC.

Why would the boost pressure go up? I know it flows better but the wastegate should be releasing pressure at the same PSI. The turbo should be working less to get the same PSI.

jersey_emt
09-16-2004, 10:32 AM
I've been thinking the same thing. I honestly don't know why pressure was increased, I'm just reporting my findings. It was 8psi before, now it's like 8.7-8.9psi (just below the 9psi park on the gauge).

The wastegate boost/vac line is not kinked.

Yay-Boost
09-16-2004, 05:09 PM
Does it hold 9 psi or is it spiking to that? Almost 9 psi without a boost control you won the MSP lotto. Are you worried about fuel cut during the winter. I would think it is going to be a PIA especially if you can't turn it down. Nothing a Joep FCD woulnd't fix though.

jersey_emt

boost pressure increased because the stock system eats some pressure. its not being created, just freed up. now the intake manifold is seeing almost the same air pressure the turbo outlet releases.

Here are the pics.

And what I have to say about the IC is:

1. Installating is pretty simple, even with me having to remove my FMIC setup.
2. Everything fits good.
3. Car holds 7psi all the way to rev limiter. Stock was 6psi max and dropped off to 5psi by redline
3. More low-end torque because the turbo spools very early and very fast
4. IC did not heatsoak at all when I went for a 40 minute hard drive, and I still have my front mounted IC on the car blocking most of the air flow to the SMIC.
5. Car pulls very smooth all the way to redline. I'm not able to compare the power level between this and the FMIC because I took out my boost controller when I put in the SMIC so the car doesn't cut. Will confirm HP this saturday on a dyno.
6. I can't stand the turkey! :)

Fire away with questions!

I decided to test it out at 9psi and it's pretty fast! It spikes to 10 and falls to 9psi by redline probably because of the stock pipes that leak at higher boost.

Dyno completed!

Please take a look at the graphs and be amazed!

The aftermarket IC was the first to get dynoed right after the 1.5 hour drive there. The last two runs were done with the cold stock IC after a 20 or so minute brake while I was switching the ICs out. The pressure drop is unbelievable with the stock IC at 9psi towards the redline as you can see in the graphs. The runs were done at 9psi. I did a run in 3rd and 4th gear for each IC. Take a look at the a/f reading as well. With stock ic the a/f reading stays off the charts rich...that could be because the ecu might need some time to learn though.

So, would someone like to inform the newbs(and me ;)) which is better, SMIC or FMIC, and why, and which is more practical for an everyday street car. Also, I realize that the SMIC is a much easier install, but would it be able to maintain a good performance if running 12psi constant? And I'm assuming it's fine at 9psi, but if running 9psi, is there any danger of hitting the dreaded fuel cut? Thanks...if there is a thread somewhere already with such information, driect me to the link.

SMIC is good up to about 15+ psi (depending on the SMIC). I really think that a FMIC is more for the prestige of having an big fancy IC that everyone can see on our cars, but that's just opinion. Unless you are upgrading to Hiboost's GT30R conversion, then this will be just fine for our stock turbo or a GT28RS. The main worry by a lot of people is the IC not getting enough air to cool it because of it's location, but you will be fine unless you are drag racing (which could easily be cured by a DIY CO2 sprayer to maximize cooling). My plan does not include a FMIC for the car, and I am hoping for some pretty big HP numbers in the next year.
