My good buddy Starving Russian just bought an 88 323 sedan, five speed. Its a real champ, damn fine condition and rust free for its ages, but it could use a little speed.
The current motor is a B6 single overhead cam engine. The B6T from the GTX is a dual overhead cam engine. I've read all about how much of a pain it can be to drop in a BPT vs the B6, but how hard is it to take a B6T and drop it into the place held by the stock B6?

The B6T will bolt right up. All of the mounts are in the right spot. The stock transmission will also bolt to the engine block with no problems.

Ya, the B6T is just a turbocharged version of the B6...

B6T's are pretty rare around the states aren't they? I've been casually looking for one for my '88 wagon for a while now.

one is SOHC and one is DOHC though, correct? also, the compression, etc is different.
question is, will the GTX ECU work on a non AWD car?

They're not super rare. They were used in (obviously) the American 323 GTX and the 91-94 Mercury Capri XR2.

question is, will the GTX ECU work on a non AWD car? There are several forms of the B6 floating around. Just to name a few, the B6 (plain jane SOHC), B6ZE (DOHC, typically found in the Miata), B6E, the B6T, etc. There was never a turbo version of the SOHC B6.
I can't help you on the ECU, but assuming the connectors are the same, I'd be willing to try it, heh.

i thought the later Capris/323 GTs used the BPT over the B6

I used to own a 1988 323 SE and started acquiring all the parts for the swap.
As fate would have it, I ended up with a GTX instead. A B6T can be sourced from many places that specialize in selling used JDM engines.
All I can tell you is that some engine management parts, especially the ECU's for the 323 GT/X and Capri XR2's are different. If you go one route, then you are committed to using the majority of parts from that vehicle.
Someone already took the time to document the parts needed for the swap. I can't vouch for the accuracy, though. You can find it here:

Hope this helps somewhat.

what kinda power is the B6t able to put out? is it worth modifying???
The B6t can be had here in GA at www.Mazmart.com for $6-700

Stock B6T is about 130 - 135 at the flywheel.
My GTX, with Intake, exhaust, RX-7 pump, ecu and boost controller, and stock turbo was 135hp at all four wheels. This was a couple years ago, at Vishnu Tuning.
I have heard of greater numbers coming from the B6T, upwards to 220hp. From there, you are about at the peak of what the head can flow, without spending $$$ just to eek out the last few drops of horsepower.
But if you are wanting more power, then I would definately go with the BPT. Preferrably, the BPT from the GTR.

as i have come to realize once you start to acquire parts for the swap... you then find the whole damn car. as what happened to me.
i have a b6t in my garage and i needed the harness and mounts, and the guy i was getting them from decided to sell me the whole damn GT complete with the motor. (minus the turbo and manifold, but i have those)
so its wierd how things work. when you actually have the money, the wheels begin to turn, and work in your favor.

It's from a Capri XR2 (B6T powered), but IIRC, it's the same as the 323....someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The ECU's are different, that I know 100%. I'm unsure of the harness and the sensor differences between the GT/X and the Capri XR2.
Jump on it, Chris.

What good are you anyway? hehe ;).
While we're on the subject, does anyone have a picture of the B6 powered 323GTX ECU connector or wiring diagram for it? I want to determine how closely related the XR2 harness is.

Reich Racing, where you can get the ECU chipped for the GTX and XR2, knows all the differences between the two. You could send them an email and find what you are looking for.
