View Full Version : Brakes for my LX?

I'm now shopping in the market for new brake rotors and pads and...*cough* brake shoes. My highschool might be able to machine my rotors but just incase, does anyone know if any other reputable brands make rotors for us other than PowerSlot (like brembo)? Also does the 2002 LX have the same brakes as the 99-00 proteges?
Also, I've been looking at the hawk pads, but what pads do you guys reccommend? Will these pads make my rotors wear rediculously? I don't know anything about shoe brands...someone reccommend something?
And last, Corksport carries the SS brake lines for the LX, but I read somewhere that the threading was in fraction and not metric. Anyone with experience have input?
Thanks everyone
eh, as far as the rotors, powerslot ones is your best bet. Dont get cross drilled rotors (unless its Brembo or Willwood), because all other brands tend to crack. Slotted rotors are good enough, unless youre pushing alot of power and need something that will stop you in no time (big brake kit, hehe)
as far as pads... Im not sure here bro.

I wish there was a cheap way to upgrade our rear drums too....:(

you can do a swap upgrade to disk brakes in the back. Thats what Im planning on doing soon.

How much does something like that cost? Just curious.(dunno)

considering that you will have to get a new master cylinder (because LX and DX master cylinders have alot of presure, that is needed for drums, and if you will use same master cylinder on disk brakes...they are more likely to crack) new rotors, and I think you will have to work with rear axles (for the fitment of rotors), eh, Im not sure on the price as of yet, but I think it should be under 500, IM JUST not sure about that, hehe.

Then you will need all new wheels and tires. I remember reading about a 4 lug rear disc over on a european protege, but I'm not sure if they just bolt on. If you find out, id be interested, but I just dont think you are going to be able to do it for under 500.

Yeh, I've looked into a conversion and if I did do it, It would be from a ES or MSP so I can have it as a 5 lug...It would be interesting though, maybe in a couple years...

99-00 1.8l cars have the same brakes front and back as an 02 LX. I should know, thats how I bought mine.
I got some brembo rotors and hawk pads for the front. I also switched to valvoline dot4 brake fluid. I'm happy with everything except the pads. They push the sliders onto the disc and create a screeching noise. Ive only had the brakes on for a few weeks but I *think* there might be premature wear on the disc due to it. If I do notice a distinctive groove I will just remove the sliders as someone on here has had the same problem and found that to be a solution.

Trac Racing in St-Eustache. Im pretty sure their website is tracracing.com, but I bought it there cause they are one of the biggest shops around and have good prices.

On a similar note, does anybody know the stock rear shoe thickness? Seems like the last aftermarket ones I bought were a little on the thin side. I can find out the minimum thickness they have to be before replacing, but not the "brand-new" thickness.
Thanks.

I've got Powerslot slotted rotors, and Hawk HPS pads.(hence my signature) I love this setup. They have WAY more "bite" and "grab" than the stock ones did. And I noticed that these rotors and pads don't fade like the stock ones did. They're perfect for street use. They don't need to be warmed up like racing rotors/pads, but they don't fade like stockers do either. I bought my car used, and after about 1500 miles of driving, I warped my right front stock rotor, and cooked the stock pads.(when I replaced my pads, I noticed the stockers hadn't been installed correctly (jerkit) ) After proper break in(VERY important), I've beat on these brakes on a daily basis, and they haven't even begun to wear. Ahh, I love the smell of hot brakes in the morning.....

How do you deal with the dust? I had Hawk HP+ front pads for about a week, it was all I could stand. More dust in 5 miles than the OEM's in 500 miles, but you're right about the bite. My problem was that I couldn't find anything better for the rear, and was always locking the fronts prematurely.

With those pads do you get any brake squealing at all? And is there anyway for us to somehow "upgrade" our rear drums, or do we have to just do a rear rotor conversion?

I wish a company could somehow make a rear drum to disk conversion kit.

So far, I get more brake dust on my wheels from my drums. (scratch) My Hawk pads don't seem to dust any worse than the stockers did. And no, they don't sqeal at all. They're no louder than the stockers. Also, keep in mind that the better the brakes work, the more dust your're gonna get. The Hawk HP+'s are more for autocrossing than daily street use anyways. That's why you get a ton of brake dust.
