WTF- It works right for once

ok, I am completely perplexed by this. My exhuast setup is a 2.5" Mandrel SS DP going into a 2.5"high-flow cat. From there on to the rear section is 3" SS mandrel bent pipes that are welded to the stock axle back msp exhuast piping and muffler. I was really dissapointed with how little power I felt from doing it. Other people who have similar systems in their turbo cars (wrx and dsm) drove it before and after and couldnt believe how little it did. Even the sound was not louder with the larger piping from when I had just the HighFlow cat in. Then last night I was driving through the twisty on the way home from the cottage and I was giving it hard through the gears. After about 20 minutes of driving the exhaust backfired extremely loud, like a gun shot loud, and I had all of the windows open so I heard it good. Now the car pulls like nuts and sounds really nice. Still not loud, just lots of tone. I think either the cat or muffler blew out or something but the car drives great. I think maybe the backpressure couldnt get out somehow and thats why the car was running like junk even with my other mods. Boost holds better too and I can control the spike by adjusting my mbc a bit better.

Has that happended to anyone else? On a side note I installed my JoeP FCD maybe 2 hours earlier, wonder if that did anything lol

LOL...that's what I was thinking! I knew a guy who couldn't understand why he was losing so much power. Then he found someone had wadded a piece of steel wool in each of his tailpipes.

Very similiar to my 1996 Protege. Since the stock exhaust line was falling apart, I decided to install one of those fartcans that were so popular back there (now people seam to go with intakes and high grip tires instead of loud and annoying fat exhausts) It was a 2" pipe from the stock cat. then straight to the 'muffler' (no resonator in the middle) I used a Ractive MT233 as the muffler. Driving out if the shop, I was shocked and amazed by how silent this fat pipe was but the car was already more torquey and 'just better' overall. Then a couple days later it started to fart like fuck with a pleasant tone. Just like an EVO3... 80 000km later this pipe got the best of me ("WHAT DID YOU SAY?", too) and I was back to stock exhaust. It took a while before it produced any interesting sound. I never even thought that mufflers need to be broken-in.

This is a moderately normal experience...more than likely what happened is you just had to "break in" your hi flow cat. Some brands have a coating on them from the production facility and it has to burn off....other than that there might of been something stuck in the piping...ie old rag from welding, paper from packing etc....also exhaust changes tones as it gets broken in, the squeaky clean pipes change pitch at they get coated in carbon buildup...I honestly wouldnt worry about it, just enjoy the power gains....
