ok im having a bit trouble understanding a very simple concept....heres the deal....i very rarely use the A/C when driving, enstead i use the outside air vent (enstead of the circulating air vent) anyway, when i do so, i always turn it to the left (somewhat cold) my buddy is saying that my A/C is ALWAYS on when i do that b/c its soo much colder, it is colder than anyother setting (feet/face and face only) so my question is, IS THE A/C ON WHEN ON THE OUTSIDE AIR AND FEET ONLY POSITION? If so, whats the point of the A/C button and is this killing my gas mileage?? (hand)

It shouldn't be. The A/C is turned on when you have it on defrost or defrost/feet though

hmm so i just have a kick ass outside air temp? i didnt think my A/C was on, i thought it was only on when the A/C button was depressed and the light is on. i mean, it gets pretty damn cold when turned as far cold as possible (atleast on the feet only position) does anyone else have this luxury?

you can always look under the hood to see if the compressor is cycling on and off. You will see the front of the A/C compressor start to spin then stop...... The pulley will spin always, but the front of is is engaged when the A/C is in operation. Hope that helps.

Be glad yours is cold ... even with my A/C on the air is still warm.

Been back to the dealership on it twice ... they say nothing is wrong ... ohh well. It is amazing though how my old Mitsu air conditioner was never charged in 5 years and still froze my ass off when on 2 of 5.

Do you have horrible issues with the car jerking all over the place when at low RPMs?

I don't have any problems like that, but I get really bad turbo lag, and my gas mileage goes to shit.

Oh, the dealer tested mine and said that the number 3 setting blows colder then number 4. Probably because we have a smaller a/c radiator (can't remember the damn name, condensor, evaporator, ???? dammit), anyway, I'm in Vegas and Number 3 is cooler then 4.... damn MSP. Also, this tip does work. There is alot of traffic here and it's there is quite a bit of sitting at stoplights in 100+ weather, so the dealer told me that our compressors work better above 2000 rpm, so I tried it and holyshite it worked. Try it out....... sitting in traffic I pull my e-brake and bring the rmps up to 2000rpm and whaaallaaaaa.... cooler air... Just my 23 cents.

A/C is always on in Def mode, Def/Ft mode and Ft mode. In the others, it's not on unless you turn it on.
You should do the how-to, it gives you full control of your HVAC controls.

Remember, these cars come with the ozone-safe R-134 refrigerant. It will never be as cold as good old "blow a whole in the sky" R-12. But, that's the treehugging world we live in.

Yep... that's what I thought! So back to the original post... the AC is constantly on then, for MSP#735. I did a test today while waiting in line... turn it to FT and I heard the compressor come on, and it was definately cold air.

Do the mod! It is how every car should be like. Plus it takes only about a 1/2 hour of your life.

damnit Mazda SUCKS!! Whats the point of the A/C button?????? I mean if i want the A/C on ill turn it on. that was/is the whole point of me using the OUTSIDE AIR and not the A/C! oh well, i guess ill have to deal with another shitty addition to our good ole MSP's.
just looked at the how-to....all i have to say is HOLY SHIT (confused) i mean, im not a damn HVAC expert, i think ill just use the other settings from now on.....hell, maybe ill notice a power and gas mileage improvemnt!

Unit in the front of the car is the condenser. Here's why it works this way: when stopped, your condenser isn't able to perform as well, due to less airflow. Because of this, the evaporator (inside of the car) isn't getting as cold as it could be. Turning the blower speed down allows the air to spend more time within the fins of the evaporator, which transfers more heat out of the air and into the refrigerant in the evaporator.
Stepping on the gas speeds up the compressor, and allows longer "on-time"... so that makes for cooler air as well.
Automotive A/C works in drastically more difficult and varying environments than your average home A/C... it's impressive that these systems can even function, given the poor refrigeration qualities of R134A.

You would think that the would manufacturer and A/C system that actually worked.

In traffic with the air on I just gotta make myself hit the gas a little harder. Otherwise the loss in power will give me a jerky ride.

I never knew that people could have such problems operating the A/C. Mine only comes on when set to defrost or I actually hit the A/C button. Otherwise I just keep the fan turned off.

Yeah, for some reason in the proteges, the ac comes on automatically when set to foot only, or in combination of foot and defrost. Guess you only use the ac button when you want cool air out the vents. I got a MSP and my friend got a P5 about the same time and we were both baffled by that till at first. Only car I ever heard of doing it that way.

I leave mine on the top vents and no ac unless i press the button. Defrost and defrost/feet ac turns on automatically. The purpose of ac turning on during defrost is it dehumidifies the air so you dont get foggy windows.

All new cars turn the compressor on when in defrost and footwell. This is done to run the air through the evaporator to de-humidify the air so it doesn't fog up the window or get the carpets wet........duh.

what about the times its humid outside say after a storm and the defrost ac comes on and it condensates the outside of the front windshield??? Then to combat this you would have to turn the defrost on and turn the temperature to the hot zone. Kinda redundant dont you think?

Here is another thing you all can do to improve the efficiency of your AC. In Mazda's infinite wisdom they decided it would be a good thing to route the s-pipe off the turbo right next to the AC Compressor, this results in the hottest part of the exhaust system (aside from the manifold) sitting very close to the unit that is working to keep the car cool.
My AC sucked when it was hot outside and my car was idiling until I wrapped my ceramic coated ION Downpipe with exhaust wrap, now it's much improved. I have a heatshield that I am going to put in between the two as well that will help even more. I am sure this mod will be just as effective on the stock set-up.

they AC in our cars does cycle on some times during vent,it does this so the seals don't dry from lack of refrigerant oil,if they dry from non-use then in the summer you will go to use it and it will leak the R-134a out.
oh,and under your hood on the passenger side, you will see a refrigerent line at the top it has a fitting with a cap.on that cap is a "L" follow that to your firewall.there you will find a connecter that looks like a doughnut,if you see an eccess of oil ther then take it in to be check, those spring locks are notoriuos for leaking.
mine was leaking from the factory.
it's common for those to leak,no matter what company makes them

oh and R 134-a isn't that bad for cooling
every other option is ether devistating to the atmosphere,or deadly flamable
and it aint about the tree huggers.our atmosphere is only 21% oxygen, and 1 hydrocarbon atoms will destroy over 1,000,000oxygen atoms.so if you like to breath you will respect thier choices to use R 134-A.

I'm prefectly fine with it, it works for me. But it's a simple fact that R-134A is about 30-40% less efficient for heat transfer than the old R-22 in home AC, let alone R-11 and R-12. The systems are just designed better to compensate.

dude your a little off, most homes use R-22
and it's only 12.6% less effeciant
